The subterranean ruins of Sector 3 smelled like ancient rust, stagnant water, and the crushing weight of forgotten history.
It was a pre-Merge subway station, a massive, cavernous tomb of shattered concrete and decaying steel pillars.
The silence was absolute.
The ground trembled.
Until the Titan Mechs arrived.
CRUNCH. CRUNCH. CRUNCH.
The heavy, mechanical footsteps of the Black-Ops Vanguard squad echoed through the dark, their eight-foot-tall exoskeletons effortlessly pulverizing the rubble beneath their reinforced boots.
Commander Graves marched at the center of the formation, his plasma rifle sweeping the shadows.
"Keep your thermal optics maximized," Graves barked over the comms, his voice laced with nervous aggression.
"Thorne said this bastard is a ghost. I want overlapping fields of fire. If a rat twitches, you vaporize it."
The six other elite cleaners grunted in confirmation.
They were professionals.
Killers who had wiped out entire rebel settlements on the surface without breaking a sweat.
But down here, in the dark, they felt exposed.
At the front of the Vanguard wedge formation, walking with a heavy, dragging limp, was Designation Zero.
Seraphina.
She wasn't wearing a mech suit.
She wore battered, un-enchanted silver plate armor that offered zero protection against the environment.
Her bare feet bled against the jagged concrete.
The heavy, glowing metal subjugation collar around her neck hummed with a low, terrifying frequency, sending constant, micro-shocks of lightning directly into her spine to keep her moving.
Her golden eyes were completely hollow, staring blankly at the dark tunnel ahead.
"Stop," Graves commanded, raising a massive metal fist.
The squad halted.
Directly in front of them was a narrow, jagged corridor formed by two collapsed subway cars.
It was a natural choke point.
The perfect place for a tripwire, an acid trap, or a localized explosive.
Graves sneered behind his reinforced visor.
He raised his foot and kicked Seraphina violently directly in the center of her back.
The S-Rank Paladin stumbled forward, falling hard onto her hands and knees, tearing the skin off her palms on the rusted metal tracks.
"Get up, meat-shield," Graves spat.
"Walk through the corridor. If there's a trap, trigger it. That's what you're paid to do."
Seraphina didn't show pain.
She didn't cry out.
She simply obeyed the command wired into her brain stem.
She placed her bleeding hands on the ground, slowly pushing herself up.
Eight hundred meters away, hidden in the pitch-black shadows of an elevated walkway, a silver eye stared unblinking through a neural-linked sniper scope.

Kaelen Cross wasn't breathing.
His heart was beating once every ten seconds.
His finger rested lightly against the hair-trigger of the 'Whisper of the Void'.
Behind him, Vespera, the S-Rank Void Succubus, was practically vibrating with anticipation.
Her cold, flawless body pressed flush against Kael's back, her chin resting on his shoulder.
"You're angry," Vespera purred, her breath puffing against the shell of his ear like dry ice, freezing the sweat on his neck.
"Your soul tastes like boiling tar right now, little hunter. It's… utterly intoxicating."
Kael didn't blink. His pulse didn't even skip.
"Get off my shoulder, Vespera."
A low, vibrating chuckle rattled in the demon's chest, her clawed fingers lightly tracing the tense line of his jaw.
"Oh, let me stay. I want a front-row seat when you make them bleed."
Kael ignored the succubus, his focus narrowing back down to a single point of absolute lethality.
His crosshairs weren't on Seraphina.
They were locked dead center on the glowing blue tactical visor of Commander Graves's Titan Mech.
[User 'Zark': CHILLS. LITERAL CHILLS. PULL THE TRIGGER YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARD! 🎯🔥]
[User 'Weapons_Nut_44': Wait, that's Grade-A Star-Metal plating on Graves's helmet. The Whisper fires localized singularities, but at 800 meters through this heavy subterranean atmospheric drag? The math is disgusting. It's going to be close.]
[User 'Degenerate_Deity': Kaelen's cold-blooded focus is literally a digital aphrodisiac. I am violently feral right now. ]
[User 'Succubus_Envy_99': The way Vespera is breathing on his neck... god I wish that were me. I am literally dripping with anticipation. Give us the blood splash daddy Kael! 🥵💦]
[User 'GamerGrip_X': RIP AND TEAR LFG!!! POP THAT TIN CAN HEAD OPEN!]
[User 'Blood_Bath_Bill': BLOW HIS HEAD CLEAN OFF HIS SHOULDERS! NO SURRENDER!🦞🩸]
[User 'X_Void_Walker_X': Chat is moving so fast no one will see that I want Kaelen to ruin my life.]
[User 'Horny_For_Havoc': I don't know if I want to be Kaelen, marry Kaelen, or let him execute me. This aura is purely illegal. 😭]
[User 'DragonBoredom': Silence your sniveling, little mechanic. A king does not miss for the doubts of mortals. Sit down, shut up, and watch him paint the concrete red.]
Seraphina took one step forward.
Kael squeezed the trigger.
The A-Tier cosmic artifact didn't fire with a loud, concussive bang.
Instead, it let out a sickening, hollow SHHHHLLLLUCK—the sound of the air being violently sucked away as a tiny black hole ripped open the dark.
The recoil didn't kick Kael's shoulder backward; it pulled the air around him forward, creating a sudden, violent vacuum that sucked the dust off the platform.
The depleted star-metal slug crossed the eight-hundred-meter distance in a fraction of a millisecond.
Graves didn't even have time to blink.
The bullet struck the dead center of his reinforced, indestructible blue visor.
The Star-Metal didn't just pierce the glass.
The singularity housed inside the slug rapidly expanded upon impact, creating a localized, chaotic gravitational collapse directly inside the helmet.
SQUELCH-CRACK!
Graves's head didn't just explode; it was violently sucked inward, then violently expelled outward.
The entire back half of his massive, eight-foot-tall Titan Mech suit blew wide open in a horrific, geyser-like eruption of crushed metal, hydraulic fluid, and vaporized human gore.
A shower of brain matter, blood, and shattered circuitry sprayed a massive fan across the rusted subway cars behind him.
The headless mech stood perfectly still for one agonizing second.
Then, it collapsed forward, crashing into the concrete with a deafening, metallic CLANG.
The underground station fell completely, utterly silent.
The remaining six Black-Ops cleaners stared at the smoking, ruined chassis of their commander in absolute, paralyzed disbelief.
"SNIPER!" Vance screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek of pure terror.
"SHIELDS! SHIELDS UP! PHALANX FORMATION!"
The elite soldiers slammed their fists against their chest plates.
BZZZZZT!
Six massive, overlapping domes of glowing blue Tier-5 Aegis energy flared to life, snapping together to form an impenetrable, shimmering wall of hard-light armor.
They backed themselves into a tight circle against a collapsed concrete pillar, covering all angles.
Their heavy plasma cannons whirred, spinning up to maximum charge, searching the darkness wildly for a thermal signature.
"Where did the shot come from?!" one cleaner yelled.
"I don't know! There was no flash! There's no thermal ping! We're fighting a fucking ghost!" Vance yelled back.
[User 'Star_Dust_69': LMAOOOOOOOO! LOOK AT THEM SHITTING THEIR MECHANICAL PANIC SUITS! SHEER TERROR! 😭😂💀]
[User 'Sleeping_Bug': YOOOO THE HEADLESS DANCE! I AM DEAD! LOOK AT THEM PANIC SCREAMING! 🤣🤣🤣]
[User 'Blood-Fiend_99': CRUSH THEM IN THEIR TIN CANS! CRUNCH THE REST OF THEM INTO SOUP! LFG!!! 🛢️🩸💥]
[User 'Weapons_Nut_44': Wait, they just deployed overlapping Tier-5 Aegis domes. That's a solid 5,000 hit points of regenerating energy shielding. Kael literally can't punch through that from the front without draining his entire magazine. He's stuck.]
[User 'Gore_Whore_9': I am screaming! The headless mech just standing there for a second... that was purely erotic. Do it again, Kael! Make the next one pop! 🤤💦]
[User 'Zark': Shield wall looks thick boyyyy. How is he going to crack that turtle shell?! 👀👀👀]
[User 'DragonBoredom': Have faith, you mindless sheep. The king is just setting up the next punchline.]
Eight hundred meters away, Kael racked the bolt of the sniper rifle.
Sshhh-clack.
A smoking, empty shell casing fell onto the concrete.
It was immediately swallowed by Vespera's 'Shadow Muffle', making zero noise.
Kael looked at the glowing blue turtle-shell the Vanguard squad had formed.
It was the textbook response to a sniper ambush.
And it was completely, utterly useless against him.
"System," Kael whispered, his eyes glowing with a cold, terrifying blue light as he channeled his newly acquired skill.
