SHHHH-THOOOM.

The second slug tore the sky in half.

It dragged a blinding streak of blue fire right down into the brightly lit street.

The bullet slammed into the slanted hood of an abandoned sedan.

But it didn't punch through.

Guided by pure spatial math, the heavy metal violently ricocheted.

BANG.

It skipped off the rusted hood, breaking the sound barrier a second time as it hooked sharply into a dark storefront.

Inside, Vance was pressing himself flush against a heavy steel beam.

He was hyperventilating, utterly convinced he was safe behind hard cover.

CLANG.

The slug struck the steel beam mere inches from Vance's nose.

It deflected one last time.

SQUELCH.

The round tore directly into the side of his unprotected neck.

It bypassed his heavy armored collar, severed his spine, and buried itself deep into the brick wall behind him.

Vance dropped his rifle.

His hands flew to his shattered throat.

Hot, thick blood sprayed through his fingers as he collapsed violently to his knees.

He tried to scream. He tried to warn the others.

But his vocal cords were gone.

All that came out was a wet, suffocating gurgle as he drowned in his own blood.

CRRRR-ACK BOOOOOOOM.

The delayed sonic boom finally slammed into the storefront.

It hit like a physical hammer, blowing out the remaining window frames and showering his dying body in jagged glass.

"Vance?!" Jax roared into the squad network.

Every single man on the squad could hear it.

The chilling, wet sound of a veteran sniper choking to death behind impenetrable cover.

"Vance, what the hell is happening?!" Jax screamed, his voice cracking under sheer panic.

"Report!"

He waited for an answer. He prayed for a tactical update.

He just wanted proof that the rules of war still existed.

No one answered.

Nothing but absolute, dead silence.

Kael didn't hesitate for a single second.

He breathed in the cold rooftop air and exhaled every last drop of his humanity.

He became a machine of pure, cold-blooded violence.

SHHHH-THOOOM.

A third shot tore the sky apart.

Down below, a terrified Bloodhound was frantically squeezing himself into an open sewer grate.

He thought the underground darkness would hide him.

He was wrong.

The bullet banked sharply off a falling chunk of concrete mid-air.

It curved tightly through a shattered second-story window and plunged straight downward.

SPLAT.

The round blew the assassin's entire knee joint into red paste just as he slipped into the grate.

His agonizing, blood-curdling scream ripped through the quiet plaza.

SHHHH-THOOOM.

A fourth shot fired before the empty shell casing even hit the rooftop floor.

This time, the heavy projectile skipped violently across the asphalt.

Once. Twice. Three times.

Kael was skimming a Mach 5 bullet like a flat stone across a calm pond.

It slid flawlessly under a massive concrete barricade.

Tucked perfectly behind that barricade was a heavy-weapons specialist.

CRUNCH.

The skipping bullet completely vaporized the man's lower half in a blinding spray of red gore.

One by one, elite Vanguard operatives collapsed into the dirt.

They cowered behind thick, load-bearing walls.

They huddled like terrified children inside pitch-black alleys.

They tucked themselves deep within concrete bunkers.

And they died all the same.

"WHERE ARE THE SHOTS COMING FROM?!" a Bloodhound screamed hysterically into the open frequency.

His mental composure was entirely shattered. He was openly sobbing.

"HE'S SHOOTING AROUND SOLID CORNERS! HE'S A DAMN GHOST!"

Deep inside a narrow alley, Commander Jax pressed his heavy frame flush against the brick wall.

His visor was blinding him with a flood of critical error warnings.

Ten elite, heavily armored men. Slaughtered in less than thirty seconds.

And not a single one of them had even seen the shooter's muzzle flash.

Jax forced his gaze upward, staring at the massive holographic screen illuminating the carnage.

The cosmic chat was scrolling at blinding speeds.

It was an endless, sickening wave of laughing skulls and grotesque emojis.

The realization hit Jax like a physical punch to the gut.

They weren't fighting an enemy sniper.

They were being farmed like livestock for galactic entertainment.

Jax slammed his metallic fist into the brick wall, cracking the stone in half.

His synthetic joints ground together under the sheer, furious strain.

"He's perched three miles out!" Jax snarled through the comms.

His voice was stripped of all its cold authority. It was laced with unadulterated desperation.

He knew he couldn't win a sniper duel.

You don't trade shots with a ghost who treats the laws of physics like a joke.

He needed to force Kael's hand.

He needed to drag this arrogant sniper down from his throne and into the mud.

"Assault Team Beta," Jax ordered, quickly switching his channel.

Ten heavy suit icons flashed green across his vision.

"The shooter is perched all the way up in the Zenith Tower."

"But his support team is sitting directly beneath our feet."

Jax unlatched a heavy combat knife from his chest rig.

With a flick of his wrist, the plasma edge hissed to life, glowing with a deadly blue hum.

"The Paladin is down there in the Sakura Station concourse."

"The demon girl is down there too. We breach the underground level and butcher his entire squad."

"Force him out of his nest to save them."

"Copy that, Commander," a deep voice grunted over the secure line.

"Heavy breaching charges are already armed directly above the main concourse."

Jax slowly stood up, staring deeply into the stormy skyline.

His optics locked onto the distant, looming spire of the Zenith Tower.

"You want to play games for an audience, Cross?" Jax whispered, his jaw grinding in the dark.

"Let's see how cool you act when we're skinning your team alive."

✦ ✦ ✦

Three miles away, Kael slowly eased his finger off the hair-trigger.

He didn't fire another round.

Through the glowing scope, a sudden, heavy shift disrupted his tactical grid.

The scattered, terrified rats were no longer the main attraction.

Ten massive heat signatures were clustering on the street surface directly above the Sakura Subway Station.

Juggernauts.

These weren't mere scouts. They were heavy siege shock-troopers, clad in layers of impenetrable blast plating.

And they were currently rigging high-yield explosives right onto the asphalt.

They had stopped cowering in the shadows.

They were lunging straight for Kael's throat by going after his team.

Kael reached up, tapping his earpiece with two fingers.

"Sera," Kael called out softly.

His voice was dead silent, stripped of any panic, but it carried a razor-sharp edge of warning.

Down in the suffocating, pitch-black darkness of the underground station, a golden light flickered.

Seraphina stood up from the cracked stone benches.

FWOOSH.

Her corrupted golden aura flared violently to life.

It cast a harsh, radiant light across the abandoned platform, illuminating the deep scars on her armor and the quiet fury in her eyes.

She reached down, her white-knuckled grip tightening around the thick leather hilt of her heavy greatsword.

For a decade, she had been a slave. A brainwashed tool used by cowards.

But not tonight. Tonight, she was the vanguard.

"I feel them right above us, Kael," Seraphina breathed into her headset.

Her voice was perfectly calm, anchoring the faint, lingering tremor of trauma that shivered through her frame.

"Ten heavy juggernauts," Kael warned, his silver eyes tracking the explosives.

"They're prepping to blow the ceiling. I'm three miles out. I can't intercept the initial drop."

Static hummed over the encrypted channel for a quiet, heavy beat.

Then, Kael heard it over the comms.

SCREEEEEEECH.

The harsh, metallic scream of a giant broadsword being dragged across a concrete floor.

It didn't sound like a woman preparing to defend herself.

It sounded like a legendary raid boss unchaining its own leash.

"You don't need to stop the breach," Seraphina whispered.

The faint tremor in her voice vanished completely, sharpening into the cold, unyielding edge of a Fallen Valkyrie.

"Let them drop into the dark with me. Just watch my back."

Three miles away, the corner of Kael's mouth tugged upward into a dark, genuine smirk.

The Vanguard commander actually thought he was ambushing a helpless support squad.

He had no idea he was dropping his men directly into a meat grinder.

Kael locked the heavy bipod firmly back against the concrete sill.

He nestled the stock of the railgun deep into his shoulder, aiming his sights right at the drop zone.

"Always."
