Xu Xiangbei really had to thank Zhao Shiping, for in his encounters with him, he verified their practices and learned the essence of the Hong Fist. Unknowingly, he also developed a gentlemanly aura and entered the realm of a Grandmaster; his martial arts and mindset both improved further.
"Wee woo! Wee woo..." An ambulance siren echoed in Xu Xiangbei’s ears, and he saw a woman leading two people in white clothes and masks, carrying a stretcher as they rushed in.
The leading woman, also wearing a mask, was named Jiang Yuyan. She was the deputy director of the obstetrics and gynecology department at the second people’s hospital of Jiangcheng, graduated from Central Medical School with a doctorate degree.
Originally, Jiang Yuyan wasn’t required to respond to today’s ambulance call, but since the attending doctor took leave, she had to step in.
She had a tall and devilishly attractive figure, and wearing her doctor’s clothes, she exuded a special temperament. With an emergency kit slung over her shoulder, she rushed in hurriedly, followed by two men carrying a stretcher, around 28 years old, and another female nurse behind them.
An average ambulance is equipped with a driver, a doctor, two stretcher bearers, and a nurse, basic knowledge Xu Xiangbei was aware of.
Jiang Yuyan came in without a word, rushing to Zhou Huaming’s side, using various instruments to start checking his breathing, heartbeat, heart rate, and blood pressure.
"Has the patient ever suffered from heart disease before?" Jiang Yuyan’s face grew more serious; the patient’s heart rate was rapidly declining, his heartbeat was extremely unstable, his blood pressure abnormal, and breathing uneven, with the risk of shock at any moment.
"My grandfather used to suffer from congenital myocardial infarction!" Zhou Fuya quickly replied, her originally beautiful face ruined by tears, her eyes red.
"Quickly! Stretcher, immediately take him to the hospital for surgery!" Jiang Yuyan pulled out an emergency drug from the kit and injected it into Zhou Huaming.
Xu Xiangbei watched from the side, not speaking up. He knew that old man Zhou Huaming wouldn’t die for the moment. If the second people’s hospital could save him, Xu wouldn’t need to bother. If not, he’d step in, play the hero, not rescue the beauty but act righteously, earning someone’s gratitude and affection.
"I’ll go with you!" Xu Xiangbei just wanted to get in the ambulance, but was stopped by Jiang Yuyan.
"Who are you? A family relative?" Her voice was anxious yet pleasant, a contralto that, when angry, carried a touch of steadiness.
"No!" Xu Xiangbei was about to say he was a doctor, but was interrupted by Jiang Yuyan with a wave.
"If you’re not a family relative, why are you meddling? You’re just causing trouble, get out!" Saying this, she shooed Xu Xiangbei away from the vehicle.
Like the wind, the ambulance sped towards the second people’s hospital.
"Xu Xiangbei, we should go check, I’m a bit worried!" Qin Xue, beside him, said with some concern, no longer calling him a pervert.
"Alright, if the situation is dire, I’ll step in, bringing someone back from the brink!" Xu Xiangbei boasted, grinning.
"You’re that skilled in medicine?" Guo Lijun beside them was somewhat skeptical, while Qin Xue remained silent, already having lost a bet with a kiss.
"Otherwise, how did I get my Good Citizen Award? You think it was just for recording something?" Xu Xiangbei joked.
"Oh, I almost forgot, I’m aware of this. I heard you saved Qian Wantong, practically bringing him back from the dead!" Guo Lijun suddenly patted her head, recalling the story.
"Li Jun, call the crime squad and get these corrupt cops and hooligans like Zhao Shiping under control. If someone dies later, they’ll be in big trouble! They’re absolute scum, not to be let off lightly!" Xu Xiangbei instructed with a serious expression.
"Of course, it’s in good hands with me!" Guo Lijun looked at Zhao Shiping, who was lying on the ground, and the terrified Wang Huaiming with great disdain in her eyes.
"Alright then, I’ll leave this to you. Qin Xue and I will head to the hospital to check on Shopkeeper Zhou’s condition!" Xu Xiangbei said, and then he and Qin Xue went to start his Porsche.
Xu Xiangbei got in, hit the gas, and like lightning, chased tightly behind the ambulance ahead.
"Hey, pervert, what do you think about Fuya’s grandfather’s condition? Is it dangerous? Will he die?" Qin Xue’s eyes showed urgency and worry!
"That would depend on the level of skill at Jiangcheng’s second people’s hospital. If there’s a top-notch doctor, they might be able to temporarily save him. Otherwise, he’ll meet King Yama!" Xu Xiangbei laughed softly, acting indifferent to the situation.
"God, so serious and yet you have no sympathy. The man might be dying and you’re making comments!" Qin Xue chided.
"Each person cleans the snow in front of their door, not caring about the frost on others’ roofs; isn’t this a direct reflection of modern scholars? Most people are like this; didn’t you notice earlier? No one was willing to stand up for those two? Not even to say a just word! This is the 21st-century man; so of course, I’m no exception!" Xu Xiangbei teased.
"Wasn’t there a young man who stood up just now?" Qin Xue’s brow furrowed slightly, seeming slightly upset.
"Wasn’t he swatted down with a slap? Don’t tell me you think a hero shouldn’t take a loss lightly. If Zhou Fuya weren’t a little prettier, had she not aroused interest, do you think he would’ve stood up? Everyone hustles for profit, all scramble for interests. There are heroic and altruistic Lei Feng-like characters in this world. There are, but they’re getting fewer and fewer." Xu Xiangbei, quite unfeeling, seemed to be just a bystander.
"Yes, people like that are getting fewer; everyone’s more and more trapped by money. I’ve yet to see a living Lei Feng either!" Qin Xue sighed, her face full of sorrow and sadness.
Xu Xiangbei laughed, "Living Lei Feng, where are there none?"
"Where?" Qin Xue looked puzzled.
"Far away in the sky, right under your nose. Some people, ah, just fail to recognize someone extraordinary standing before them!" Xu Xiangbei feigned a sorrowful look, like a poet unappreciated in his time.
"You? A living Lei Feng? More likely a living Chen Shimei." Qin Xue sneered.
"How could I be Chen Shimei? If anything, I’d be an emperor, with a harem of three thousand beauties." Xu Xiangbei burst into laughter.
"If you were emperor, you’d be a lousy one. Maybe a fallen king like that infamous King You of Zhou. I think you might be even worse!" Qin Xue turned up her nose at him in disdain.
"Xiao Xue, it seems you have misunderstandings about me. We should really get to know each other well. Best closer, intimately, what do you say?" Xu Xiangbei wore a cheeky smile, with thoughts of a beautiful scene, grinning wickedly.
"Scram!" Qin Xue blushed, cursing angrily.
Soon, the ambulance arrived at the hospital and went straight into the operating room.
Zhou Fuya waited anxiously at the door of the operating room, looking utterly lost. Her once-beautiful and delicate face was red from crying. She seemed lifeless, staring straight at the operating room as if she could see through it.
Xu Xiangbei and Qin Xue hurried over, and upon seeing her state, felt heartache.
Xu Xiangbei immediately went up to hold Zhou Fuya, constantly comforting her. Letting her cry on his shoulder, Xu Xiangbei only felt warmth and his heart stirred.
But he was unexpectedly well-behaved, gently patting Zhou Fuya’s back, not daring or allowed to make any other moves as Qin Xue watched intently.
Besides, even without Qin Xue watching, he wouldn’t have done anything else; he genuinely cared for this fragile and strong girl from the bottom of his heart.
Within minutes, Jiang Yuyan came out, removing her mask, revealing a nearly perfect face, rendering Xu Xiangbei momentarily stunned.
"I’m sorry, Miss Zhou, we have tried our best. But your grandfather is truly beyond saving. His heart is already failing, exacerbated by congenital myocardial infarction. Without a suitable heart replacement within ten minutes, he will perish instantly!" Jiang Yuyan spoke with a sorrowful expression, her tone filled with helplessness.
These words were like a bolt from the blue for Zhou Fuya; she shouted: "Then find a heart to replace his! I can borrow money, get a loan, sell myself, anything is okay. Just save my grandfather, even if it means using my heart!"
Thankfully, Xu Xiangbei held her tightly, otherwise, she would have rushed into the operating room by now.
