However, fate always plays tricks when you least expect it. As the saying goes, when God seeks to destroy someone, He first makes them mad.
"My grandfather is almost dying, and you’re still gambling with his life! How can you do this?" Zhou Fuya’s face flushed red as she grabbed Xu Xiangbei’s note, ripping it into pieces. Then she bit and swallowed it whole.
Inside Xu Xiangbei’s mind, a thousand curses: Here goes nothing, my wife, my wife.
It was as if Zhou Fuya ripped not the piece of paper, but his heart, tearing it into shreds, bloody and broken, before swallowing it.
"I’m sorry!" Jiang Yuyan hung her head in shame. Making bets with someone’s life in front of their family is extremely disrespectful. Had she not been momentarily infuriated by Xu Xiangbei, she would have never agreed to such terms.
"Please, stop causing trouble and save him!" Qin Xue was also ashamed, pointing at Xu Xiangbei and shouting.
"I don’t want to save anyone. I just lost my wife like that, I’m in no mood, how can I save anyone?" Xu Xiangbei feigned anger.
"Even if your note is gone, you must fulfill it. Don’t think about backing out. Coward, you know he can’t be saved, yet you act like a miracle worker. I’ll tell you, I have another piece of paper for that bet, and if you fail, you’ll owe three billion!"
Jiang Yuyan spoke cautiously, afraid to further hurt Zhou Fuya’s already wounded and sensitive heart.
"Brother Xu, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have acted impulsively. Please, save my grandfather!" Zhou Fuya snapped back to reality, realizing she had lost her temper, and began apologizing tearfully, just short of kneeling.
"Alright, alright, but I’ve lost a wife!" Xu Xiangbei couldn’t bear her expression of desperation and quickly responded.
"As long as you can save my grandfather, I’ll be your wife!" Zhou Fuya’s gaze was filled with determination and hope. She had already seen Xu Xiangbei as the last lifeline.
"Fuya, don’t be impulsive, don’t do that. If he dares to demand any reward for saving your grandfather, I will make sure he never has offspring!" Qin Xue said coldly, staring hard at Xu Xiangbei.
"Sister Qin, please don’t say that. If Brother Xu can genuinely save my grandfather, I’d give my life!"
After speaking, Zhou Fuya turned and stared directly at Xu Xiangbei, as if he had wronged her, making Xu Xiangbei feel guilty.
"Alright, I’ll go save him immediately!"
Xu Xiangbei and his group entered the operating room, where a man in his mid-forties stood by the surgical bed.
He wore a white coat, had a slender face, small eyes, and a pale complexion, with blue-black glasses. His hair was short, cut flat, wearing shiny polished leather shoes, holding a pen and a doctor’s file.
"Yu Yan, are these all the patient’s family members?" The man first saw Jiang Yuyan, with a hint of desire in his eyes, carefully concealed.
"Director Chang, this is Mr. Xu, who claims he can cure the patient!" Jiang Yuyan looked at him with a respectful gaze.
"That’s impossible unless he gives his own heart for replacement. The patient won’t last much longer; let the family see him one last time before sending him to the cold storage. Here’s the death certificate, who will sign? Alas, the departed, gone forever!"
Director Chang handed out a death certificate, requesting a signature.
"No way, my grandfather won’t die!" Zhou Fuya saw the document, her eyes filled with helplessness.
"Grieve and move on. Everyone has to face birth, old age, sickness, and death. Little girl, just sign here." Director Chang brightened at Zhou Fuya’s beauty but remained respectful, sighing as he spoke.
"A bunch of quack doctors, obviously it would end like this." Xu Xiangbei sneered.
"Who are you talking about?" Director Chang’s face filled with anger.
"Anyone who says the person on the bed is going to die and can’t be saved, that’s who I’m talking about. It’s blatant exploitation and murder." Xu Xiangbei responded defiantly.
"This is an insult, blatant slander. I will sue you. I, Chang Shijie, graduated from the Central Medical University, held a professor position, practiced for over 30 years, won awards in numerous domestic and international medical competitions. To be called a quack by a young brat like you, that’s a joke!" Director Chang spoke passionately, spittle flying.
"If someone can clearly be saved, but you say they can’t, that’s not a quack doctor, what is?" Xu Xiangbei looked disdainful.
"You, fine! I’ll see what you’re capable of. What university did Mr. Xu graduate from? What esteemed position does he hold now?" Director Chang pointed at Xu Xiangbei, his face red with anger, almost wishing he could attack Xu Xiangbei directly but restraining himself.
"Xu Mou never attended university and is now a consultant for Jiangcheng’s First People’s Hospital!" Xu Xiangbei truly didn’t understand why they always asked about esteemed positions and medical school graduation. He didn’t have much, yet they always emphasized academic degrees and awards.
"Without a formal medical degree, still being a consultant at Jiangcheng First People’s Hospital. The standard of Jiangcheng First People’s Hospital is declining; any ordinary person can get in. No wonder they lost to us in the last national medical competition." Director Chang’s eyes filled with ridicule, speaking without reservation.
"Heroes are unconcerned with origins. Before Liu Bang became emperor, he was merely a small local official; Zhu Yuanzhang was a monk before establishing his empire.
The heroes of old are generally so! The more capable someone is, the more they might hide their talents. Director Chang’s shallowness truly disappoints me!" Xu Xiangbei’s eyes were filled with lament, feeling the person before him lived up to his name but not his character.
Well, Xu Xiangbei this guy, he’s something else! From his words, he’d like to compare himself with Liu Bang and Zhu Yuanzhang!
Qin Xue was turning red for him, wondering where he got such courage to be so bold, practically boasting shamelessly.
"You, huh! I won’t argue with you. Just save the person first and then talk to me. Don’t just brag, acting like you’re Hua Tuo reborn." Director Chang was so angry his face turned red, pointing at Xu Xiangbei, wanting to curse but couldn’t.
"Naturally, once I take action, it’ll be miraculous, even if King Yama orders death at midnight, I’ll extend it till dawn!" Xu Xiangbei appeared confident, commanding everyone’s stunned attention around him.
"Let me tell you, if you don’t act now, he has ten minutes left. If you act and he dies, that’s murder, understand?" Director Chang spoke without mercy, with a warning and a hint of threat.
He then turned to Zhou Fuya and said, "Young girl, if he doesn’t act, your grandfather has about ten minutes left. You can say a few words, just farewell! But if this quack acts, it really could be a death sentence, maybe immediate. Decide whether you want him to treat or not yourself?"
After hearing him, Zhou Fuya felt troubled and conflicted, hesitating as she looked at her grandfather, barely breathing on the bed.
"Xiao Ya, rest assured, Brother Xu promises revival!" Xu Xiangbei feared she wouldn’t agree, hurriedly reassuring her.
"Yes, Fuya, this scoundrel, although not impressive as a person, is indeed skilled in medicine!" Qin Xue began to support him.
Zhou Fuya bit her lips, finally turning determined, with hopeful eyes, grabbing Xu Xiangbei’s hand: "Brother Xu, I trust you, as long as you save my grandfather, anything is possible? I am willing to serve you as a servant my whole life."
Feeling the soft grip, Xu Xiangbei was delighted, practically soaring at the promise of servitude.
"Hurry and save him!" Qin Xue interrupted his indulgent expression.
"Oh!" Xu Xiangbei came to his senses, ready to act immediately.
He stretched out his hand, grasping Zhou Huaming’s skeletal wrist, feeling his pulse, channeling a stream of inner strength through the patient’s vital veins.
At this moment, Elder Zhou was barely breathing, his heartbeat irregular, threatening to stop at any moment. His blood circulation was slow, as he lay unconscious, pale due to poor blood circulation.
