Caught completely off guard, he was hit twice in rapid succession.
The phone in the Monkey King Mask Man's hand slipped from his grip and clattered to the floor. At the same time, his body lurched forward, stumbling several unsteady steps.
But it wasn't over yet.
After the first shadowy figure came a third one, who delivered a flying kick straight to the Monkey King Mask Man's back.
That kick sent him crashing face-first into the wall. A heavy thud echoed through the room, and then the Monkey King Mask Man slowly slumped to the ground, seemingly losing consciousness.
These three shadowy figures were none other than Lin Yu, the Silver-Haired Guy, and the Pimply Guy.
All three of them stood over the crumpled form of the Monkey King Mask Man, panting heavily, a mixture of tension and excitement coursing through them. Lin Yu walked over to the unconscious man's side and picked up his red fire axe.
After all, he was just an ordinary person. He wasn't like the deranged criminals and serial killers who lived in this place. Those monsters, once they caught someone, would basically kill them on the spot and pronounce their death sentence.
He was still a normal, ordinary person.
He didn't want to kill anyone.
So Lin Yu simply stood there, watching the Monkey King Mask Man.
Meanwhile, the other two, the Silver-Haired Guy and the Pimply Guy, went over to a nearby window and pulled down the curtains.
They stripped two large curtains from their rods, then returned and worked together with Lin Yu, using the fire axe to cut the fabric into strips.
With the torn curtain strips, they bound the Monkey King Mask Man's hands, feet, and mouth, tying everything up thoroughly and securely.
Only after confirming he couldn't break free did all three of them finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Then, almost in unison, they turned to look at the open air vent.
Lin Yu glanced at the Silver-Haired Guy and the Pimply Guy, then chuckled, "Good thing you two came up with so many ideas."
When the five-minute countdown had ended, they'd scrambled to find hiding spots. But the massive library, despite seemingly having plenty of places to hide, actually offered very few truly safe spots. So they'd sprinted around the third floor frantically, and that's when they'd discovered the air vent up there.
When they'd first spotted the vent, none of them had considered it an escape route. After all, it was positioned way too high, basically at the top of the wall. So their instincts had automatically ruled it out.
They had the Silver-Haired Guy to thank for that.
It was the Silver-Haired Guy who suggested they could stack desks and chairs together like building blocks to reach it.
Of course, the Silver-Haired Guy being able to come up with that idea was something he owed to his neighbor, the older brother figure Li Shumu. When he was little, Li Shumu would often take him to watch suspense, horror, and puzzle-solving movies, TV shows, and read books of the same genre.
But just when they thought all hope was lost, a new path opened up before them.
They'd managed to quickly build a makeshift staircase leading up to the vent. However, when the two girls climbed up first and crawled inside, they came back not long after.
They were devastated.
Because the two girls brought back terrible news.
The bad news was that the air vent, whoever the hell designed it, had a ridiculous flaw. The first stretch of the vent was completely wide enough for an adult, including a grown man.
But after crawling only a few meters, the vent suddenly narrowed to a size that could only accommodate a petite woman.
A few more meters after that, it could only fit a baby...
And just like that, their only path to survival was sealed off.
On top of that, building the makeshift staircase to reach the vent had already cost them precious time. At this point, they had nowhere left to run.
So the Silver-Haired Guy and the Pimply Guy put their heads together and decided to take a gamble.
The plan was for the only two girls among the five of them, Lin Yu's girlfriend Zheng Zihan and the Pink Long-Haired Girl, to hide inside the air vent, while the three guys would hide among the rows of bookshelves near the vent.
Their strategy was to hope that when their pursuers came up and noticed the anomaly of the open vent, they'd be drawn to it, and that's when they could launch a sneak attack from behind.
But this plan was essentially a huge gamble on luck.
Luck factor one: If both the man in his thirties and the Monkey King Mask Man had come up together, even a sneak attack wouldn't have been very effective. Fortunately, Lady Luck was on their side, and only one person came up.
Luck factor two: If the Monkey King Mask Man had meticulously checked every single row of bookshelves back and forth, then the three of them hiding in the shelves would likely have been discovered ahead of time.
In that case, the outcome would have been unpredictable, and a sneak attack would have been nearly impossible.
Luck factor three: When the Monkey King Mask Man noticed the anomaly of the air vent, he happened to be facing away from them. If he'd been facing them, their sneak attack might not have succeeded either.
So they figured that this time, they were absolutely going to make it out unscathed.
Of course.
The three of them weren't relying purely on luck.
For example, right now, none of the three of them had shoes on.
They'd taken them off to make sure their footsteps wouldn't give them away during the sneak attack.
With the Monkey King Mask Man now bound and still unconscious, the three of them helped Zheng Zihan and the Pink Long-Haired Girl down from the air vent.
The two girls stretched their arms and legs once they were out.
Crouching in that vent for so long had been seriously uncomfortable.
"Alright, now there's just that one guy left. And besides, we've got weapons, and we've got numbers. Who's afraid of who?!"
Lin Yu swung the fire axe around, looking extremely smug.
The Pink Long-Haired Girl asked him, "So what should we do now?"
Lin Yu looked at the other two guys.
The Silver-Haired Guy said, "Just wait here!"
Outside the library.
Jiang Ran and the others had arrived at the library's main entrance.
But the main door was locked, and they couldn't get it open.
They went around to the back door, but it was locked as well.
And all the library windows were covered with iron bars, like a prison cell designed to keep inmates locked in.
They circled back to the main entrance.
Jiang Ran said, "We should send someone back to get the spare key. The building manager should have one."
Yang Qi said, "No need for all that trouble."
Jiang Ran: "Yang Qi, you're not thinking of forcing the door open, are you? Damn... don't break it and make us pay for it. This door doesn't look cheap!"
Yang Qi: "I can pick the lock."
Everyone else: !!!
Without further ado, Yang Qi pulled a piece of wire from his pocket and gave everyone present a live demonstration of how to open a door.
They watched as Yang Qi inserted the wire into the keyhole of the library's main door, fiddling and jiggling it around. In less than a minute, with a click, the door swung open.
While Jiang Ran and the others were still staring in stunned disbelief, Yang Qi said:
"Alright, let's go in. Aren't we here to save people? Stop wasting time."
Yang Qi pulled open the library door.
The moment it opened, a thick, overwhelming smell of blood rushed out to meet them.
Just inside the library entrance, a blood-soaked figure stood there, staring straight at Yang Qi.
