Chapter 245: 245. Home I

Maisie

I threw my bloodied hands up to shield myself on instinct, but rather than get chopped up in its mouth like dinner, another round of gun fire cracked above me and the creature let out another horrendous shriek.

It staggered back and I lowered my hand for another shot, to see the bullet fly and land in the spot between the creature’s eyes.

It jerked but stayed upright and snarled at something behind me.

My spine tingled with awareness and I knew one of my mates was here.

A third bullet flew. A fourth. A fifth. In quick succession. The creature’s shrieks grew louder, its head snapping back, and black blood splashed all over the earth around me as it tried to steer, to get off the ground.

Another bullet found its wing and its massive body tipped to the side, and it collapsed into me, crushing me to the ground when a final bullet blasted through its skull.

The weight of it stole all the air from my lungs and I panted, staring at the skies and cursing and thanking the goddess for both my terrible luck and my wonderful luck for always getting myself in positions where I was bound to get killed.

The sound of boots snapping branches teased my ear, just as a very angry face appeared in my field of vision.

Soren.

His expression was dark enough to blot out daylight. "Clearly the collar and tracker weren’t enough for you," he said, voice tight with anger. "How would you like to be chained to a post next time, Adams?"

"Maybe get this thing off me first?" I wheezed.

His left eye twitched. He brought the phone to his ear without looking away from me. "I found her."

Then those strong hands rolled the heavy corpse off my body. I sucked in four desperate breaths before my eyes snagged on the gun still hanging from his fingers.

"How did you know how to kill it?" I rasped.

Soren extended a hand. I took it and let him pull me into a sitting position. The contact sent a sharp current straight up my arm.

"We’ve been hunting those things for months. Took an entire unit of guards to figure out where was most vulnerable. They’ve never come this close to the Academy before."

He dropped into a crouch in front of me. Without warning, he gripped my chin and turned my face left, then right, inspecting every mark.

His gaze dropped lower, to the open shirt, the blood, my still-bleeding knee and his expression grew stormier with every second. "Who hurt you?"

I tried to pull away. "I’m fine—"

His fingers tightened, yanking my face forward until we were only an inch apart. His breath was cool mint and clean aftershave, and it made my stomach flip.

"I’ll have no more of your lies, Adams." The words were spoken softly and intimately. "Unless you want a repeat of our last lesson on the consequences of keeping secrets right here, right now, you will answer me. Honestly."

I recalled what lesson in particular he was talking about.

The kind that involved bending me over a surface roughly, skirt shoved up, his hands bruising my hips as he painted the back of my thighs with his cum.

My mouth went dry. Heat flooded my cheeks. "The guard," I said begrudgingly. "The leader. He... attacked me. He worked for the Queen."

Calculating violet eyes tracked mine. "And do these attacks happen often?"

I didn’t respond.

Soren’s grip on my jaw tightened but his thumb flicked over the smarting skin where I had been slapped. "What happened to you, May?"

My eyes stung and my lips quivered.

But I said nothing.

Disappointment flickered across Soren’s face and he dropped my chin. Then I stared, stunned, when he reached for his torso and pulled off his waistcoat.

And then, he began unbuttoning his shirt.

I watched, throat tight, as the fabric parted and the sun kissed his hard muscles and smooth skin. He stripped slowly and it was just skin and clothes, but I couldn’t breathe right anymore.

"What are you doing?" I asked, voice embarrassingly breathy.

He didn’t answer. He wrapped the shirt around his fist, leaned over me, and placed a hot hand on my bare calf. His eyes stayed locked on mine as those elegant fingers slid slowly up the inside of my leg, parting my thighs.

Goosebumps raced across my skin. My breath caught.

But he stopped just shy of the ruined knee and began wrapping the shirt tightly around it, forming a tourniquet.

"I need to get the bullet out," he said, his voice tougher than it had been a moment ago. "But I need to clean the wound first." He tied a knot at the top of my knee and I tried not to wince as pain ran down my leg. "Is this good?"

I swallowed thickly, my eyes snagging on bare torso. His muscles were bunching and his abs were... very distracting as they flexed. I shook my head. Then nodded. "No. Yes... I mean..." I licked my dry lips. "It’s–it’s good."

His arms slid under my knees and around my back in one smooth motion, lifting me against his naked chest like I weighed nothing. The sudden skin-to-skin contact punched a soft moan out of me.

Soren froze at the sound and exhaled sharply.

Warmth flooded my belly. My horny, hungry Lycan started purring so loudly I was terrified he could hear it.

My fingers started twitching at my sides. I so desperately needed to touch his skin. His hair. Kiss him. Press him against a tree and put my hands down his pants. Take him in my mouth and taste him in the most raw form possible.

"I–I can walk," I stammered.

"No, you can’t," he answered. "This is more efficient."

"But–"

"I wasn’t asking."

My mouth snapped shut.

He carried me through the trees in rigid silence. Every step pressed my cheek against his collarbone. Every shift of my weight made his arms tighten, like he expected me to jump out of his arms and bolt the second he loosened his hold.

I kept my face turned away, fighting the overwhelming urge to bury my nose in his neck and breathe him in.

He stared straight ahead, jaw locked, and though there was no bond between us, something alive hummed between, like a magnetic force had come to being, trying to force a collision.

We’d only just reached the Academy gates when a black SUV rolled to a stop in front of us.

Richie jumped out and opened the rear door.

I frowned. "Um, school is that way."

"I’m aware," Soren said tightly.

"Then why are we getting in the car?"

He looked down at me then, really looked, and the heat in his eyes made butterflies erupt in my stomach. Butterflies? More like dragons.

"I’m taking you home."
