Dakota Delaney snapped back to herself as if waking from a bad dream. She stumbled to the bedroom doorway, hands hidden behind her back, staring at Magnus Specter with nervous, helpless eyes.
Victoria Reyes and Fiona Martin rushed in right after, each grabbing one of Magnus’s arms. They barely touched him before Magnus jerked both arms hard, flinging the two women aside. They hit the floor with dull thumps.
“Enough!”
His voice was still rough from the drink, but his head had cleared a little. Magnus strode toward the doorway Dakota was blocking, drew a deep breath, and fixed his gaze on her.
“Move. My words stand. I’ll pretend none of you were ever here.”
Dakota couldn’t meet his eyes. The smell of alcohol coming off him made her shrink back. Her head dropped on its own, and a wave of shame hit her from somewhere deep.
Had she really fallen this low? To chase a man, only to be coldly pushed away like this? What had she become?
“Just... move first,” Magnus said, forcing his tone down. “I... I know everything.” He turned to glance at Victoria, who had just gotten up from the floor. “Victoria, I don’t blame you. I heard. You just wanted another child. I get that. So I’m not angry today. All of you—go home. I’m serious. Leave now. I’ll act like tonight never happened.”
Victoria froze halfway as she was steadying herself on the bar counter. Her seductive look vanished. One hand braced on the counter, she bowed her head silently.
The mention of a child—he had hit the softest part of her. If not for that, would she ever have done something like this? Was this really the kind of woman she had become?
Her other hand stayed tucked behind her back, gripping something tight. A small bottle—an intoxicant. Chloe Clark had spent days searching and finally dug it out of a fallen meteorite. That was why Victoria had been so confident.
Magnus let out a long breath. His steps still wobbled. He glanced at the three women—heads all lowered—then turned and walked toward the corridor between the living room and the bedroom. Leaning against the wall, he lit a cigarette, hoping the smoke would clear his mind.
“I know you’re not this kind of women. Just go. I’ll forget it...”
Dakota covered her mouth as a sob tore out. “So that’s what I am in your eyes? That bad?”
“No. That’s not what I meant. None of you are... it’s just that I...”
He fumbled for words, trying to straighten out the mess in his head. The more he spoke, the less he knew what to say. He lowered his gaze, took a drag, debating his next words—
Then Victoria suddenly rushed at him.
Magnus barely had time to flinch before a spray of cold mist hit his face—his nose, his mouth, even his eyes. He shook his head violently and reached out instinctively. His hand clamped onto a shoulder—someone’s—then everything went black. His body collapsed forward into the arms of the woman in front of him.
...
Morning light stabbed through the window. Magnus blinked awake, head pounding, temples aching. He sat up slowly, looked around the bedroom—empty.
Something had happened last night... hadn’t it?
He pushed the blanket aside—no one beside him. His clothes were the same as last night. Intact. Nothing out of place.
He stood from the bed, still trying to piece things together. Nothing. Just fragments. The last clear moment was Victoria—yes, it had to be her—spraying something straight into his face.
What was it?
An intoxicant?
Magnus Specter pulled open the bedroom door and had barely stepped out when he froze. Emily Ward, Sophia Reid, and Liana Jabbar were all there. On the low stools sat Victoria Reyes, Fiona Martin, and Dakota Delaney, heads bowed like wrong‑doers waiting for judgment. Sophia Reid was in the middle of scolding them, voice sharp with fury, calling them shameless without the slightest restraint.
The moment Magnus appeared, Sarah Franklin hurried over. Before he could even get a word out, she started talking fast, almost tripping over her own breath.
“Magnus, nothing happened last night. Chloe Clark ran up to find Emily and Sophia. We all came back early. You didn’t do anything... nothing happened...”
Really?
Magnus stared blankly at the three women on the stools. “They stayed here the whole night?”
“Yes! When we rushed back, we caught them right here. They didn’t touch you, and nothing happened. Really, nothing!” Sarah explained again and again. Magnus felt his chest loosen just a little. If he had ended up adding these three to the mess... the trouble afterward would’ve been endless.
And honestly, he didn’t have the mood for any of that now.
The Ice Regiment had just found a temporary base—they didn’t even know how long it would last.
Hunting beasts, digging for meteorite fragments, the Ironvale bunkers, Springvale City, those other prefecture‑level towns... even the distant, near‑mythical Queenstead City—everything was weighing on him. A whole pile of headaches waiting to explode.
“If nothing happened, then... forget it.” Magnus stepped closer to the three women, rubbing at his temples. His head still pulsed with leftover pain.
Dakota Delaney and Fiona Martin kept their heads down, trembling slightly. Only Victoria Reyes lifted her eyes, watching him with a deep, unreadable look—as if she wanted to speak but didn’t dare.
Sophia Reid marched over, cheeks flushed with anger. She jabbed a finger hard against Magnus’s shoulder.
“You even want to speak for them?! I swear, you— you must like them!”
Magnus stared at her, baffled. Then he glanced over at Emily Ward and the others. None of their expressions looked good. Chloe Clark was staring at her feet too, not daring to look at him.
Didn’t Chloe go to find Sophia and Emily last night? Why was *she* acting guilty?
Then the thought hit him—he had once seen Chloe and Victoria kissing in the bathing cart. Was Chloe angry at Victoria? Jealous?
And Victoria wanting a child... that wasn’t something Chloe told him. Back in the underground granary, it was Isla Stern who warned him, saying Victoria had asked her for that small blue bottle and told him to be careful...
The whole atmosphere felt strange. Wrong in a way he couldn’t put his finger on.
“Enough. Get them out of my sight. I don’t want to look at them right now.” Emily Ward stood up, expression dark. Without hesitation she crushed a Super Fire Crystal in her palm, sparks bursting between her fingers. She shot the three women a cold, merciless glance.
“You three. With me. Think things through in isolation. Until then—solitary confinement.”
Magnus watched the women step off the vehicle one by one, stunned. This seemed... excessive.
Aside from the incident with her younger brother Kevin Ward in his past life, he had almost never seen Emily lose her temper like this.
And a whole Super Fire Crystal—just gone?
Before long, Emily returned. Her face was still icy. She shot Magnus a brief look, snorted, and then dragged Chloe Clark off the vehicle without saying a single word...
