“First Victor Dean, then Queenstead City...”
Magnus Specter sat with the women and hammered it out for hours, all the way past midnight until near three in the morning. In the end, they finally had a rough plan.
They would stay in Ironvale County for three days first.
In those three days, they’d dig out every meteorite inside Ironvale County, then sweep the nearby towns clean too. After that, they’d go check the De Mountain air-raid shelter.
Three days later, the main force would head toward Springvale City.
If they wanted to strike Victor Dean’s forces, they had to pass through Springvale City first. But nobody knew what shape Cliff Baxter’s people were in now. Magnus Specter had to see it with his own eyes. He planned to go ahead first and scout Springvale City himself.
They didn’t have massive stores of ammunition. Very likely, Cliff Baxter’s side hadn’t held out well against that wave of apocalypse creatures. If his force had been worn down to scraps, then they’d wipe them out first and cut off future trouble at the root. After that, they’d use the area around Springvale City as a base and look for a way to crush Victor Dean’s army.
And then there were the huge piles of meteorites inside Springvale City.
No way in hell they could let that slip.
Ninety million rounds of bullets. Military mines. Rockets. mortar shells. Grenades. Heavy machine-gun ammo for infantry fighting vehicles. Even sniper rifles.
Just thinking about it made Magnus Specter’s mouth go dry.
The prize was too fat.
The real trouble was something else—how to keep casualties as low as possible while still wiping Victor Dean’s force clean off the board.
The next morning, Chloe Clark, Isabel Finch, Molly Robinson, Lucy Horváth, Ashton Honda and the others set out one after another.
Chloe Clark took overall charge of the meteorites inside Ironvale County. Isabel Finch and the others followed the map and split off toward the various towns.
The seven batches of female team members sent out a week ago had also begun returning over the past few days, linking back up with the main force one group at a time. Nothing major had happened to them, and they hadn’t run into that giant snake again either.
Magnus Specter stepped down from the RV. He had been about to head out with Harper Quinn when he spotted Charlotte Renard in the underground parking garage, directing a group of women as they worked on a huge iron cage.
He paused, curious, then walked over.
“Sis Charlotte, what’s the cage for?”
Charlotte Renard wiped the sweat from her brow and answered, “Sophia said we’re going out to catch a rat demon beast later. Bringing it back for an experiment.”
“An experiment?” Magnus Specter frowned. “Catching a rat for what?”
Charlotte Renard explained, “Don’t we still have more than twenty barrels of snake blood? And that snake gall too. We figure the stuff’s got to work better than using chickens, ducks, or geese. So we’ll catch a rat and test it first, see what happens.”
Magnus Specter thought it over and felt a little sour inside.
These past few days, he really had let himself slip. One thing after another, the women had thought of first. In some ways, they were even more thorough than he was.
Still, Sophia Reid’s idea did sound solid.
“All right,” he said. “Then tell Sophia she doesn’t need to go catch it. I’ll go now.”
“Too late. She already went, she—”
Before Charlotte Renard could finish, the half-rotten duck carcass blocking the entrance to the underground garage was dragged aside.
A moment later, Sophia Reid drove an off-road vehicle in herself, towing behind it a giant rat demon beast that was still thrashing and squealing. A sleeper bus followed close behind.
The rat demon beast had been trussed up tight with steel wire rope, tied so hard it looked like it had been carved into knots.
Sophia Reid had only taken fifty team members as cover. Then she led twenty women straight in with Metal Crystal and captured the beast alive in just a few brutal moves.
“Sis Charlotte, is that cage done yet?”
Sophia Reid jumped down from the vehicle and strode over with fast, sharp steps. Her clothes carried dust, and there was still a cold edge on her face from the hunt. When she saw Magnus Specter standing there, she flicked him a glance, flat and unreadable, but said nothing to him.
Then she turned back to Charlotte Renard.
“Hurry it up. I already brought it back. Alive.”
“Yeah, yeah, almost done...”
Charlotte Renard pushed them to move faster. In less than half an hour, the cage for the rat was finished. Sophia Reid led ten female teammates whose Metal Crystal effects still hadn’t worn off, and with a mess of hands and curses they wrestled the giant rat into the cage. Then they slammed the iron door shut and locked it.
Once trapped inside, the rat beast went wild.
It was as big as an off-road wagon, and now it rammed left and right like a mad thing, smashing itself against the bars hard enough to make the whole frame shriek. Good thing Charlotte Renard had added four extra iron chains to the sides of the cage. The other ends were tied fast to the backs of several heavy trucks. The rat beast struggled for more than ten minutes, but it got nowhere. At last it gave up and crouched in the middle of the cage, belly low, breathing hard. Its eyes, each as wide as a dinner plate, rolled slowly as it scanned everything around it.
“I’ll try first.”
The Metal Crystal effect was still on her. Sophia Reid stretched out one hand and walked up to the cage.
The rat beast tensed at once. Every muscle in its body drew tight. It stared at her, sharp and watchful, following every little move.
Sophia Reid held her arm up and inched forward bit by bit. Her fingers crept closer and closer until they were almost at the edge of the cage opening. Still, the rat beast did nothing. It only watched her, fully guarded, like a drawn bow that hadn’t loosed yet.
It knows I used a Metal Crystal?
A flicker of doubt crossed her face.
Sophia Reid slowly slid her hand into the cage.
Still no reaction.
She glanced left and right, then turned to look at Magnus Specter, wanting to ask what was going on.
That was the moment the rat beast struck.
With a savage snap, it lunged forward and clamped its jaws around her arm.
Sophia Reid screamed.
The rat beast bit down hard and shook its head from side to side like it meant to tear the limb clean off. Sophia Reid’s whole body was slammed against the cage wall and flung back and forth with the motion, like a rag tied to a whip.
Magnus Specter stood off to the side, grinning.
He’d known this was coming.
Back in the underground grain depot, he’d gone out with a Metal Crystal active and gotten slammed around by a whole pack of rat beasts. And damn it all, he’d done that to save this woman.
Hell with it. After the way she ran her mouth about him yesterday, this was almost worth watching.
“Magnus Specter, you bastard!” Sophia Reid shouted, dizzy from being whipped around, but she caught sight of him standing there laughing.
Magnus Specter stayed right where he was. Just laughed. Didn’t step in.
More than a dozen women from both sides came running, boots thudding over the ground, and rushed in to pull Sophia Reid back. But the rat beast was vicious beyond reason. For a moment, it was pure chaos. Several women grabbed at Sophia Reid’s sleeves and pulled hard.
Riiip—
With one tearing sound, half the clothes on her upper body were ripped away. The women who had hold of her stumbled and fell backward to the ground. The ones clutching at her thighs lost focus for just a heartbeat—
Riiip—
The cloth on her legs tore too.
Magnus Specter had been looking down, busy lighting a smoke. Then he heard the tearing and the shouting. He lifted his head without thinking.
He had just taken a drag. The smoke had barely hit his lungs before the sight in front of him made him choke and cough.
Sophia Reid was exposed. Half her body was bare.
Magnus Specter stared straight at her and froze for a second.
Sophia Reid’s face went red with shame and fury. She nearly exploded on the spot.
“Magnus Specter, you bastard! I’ll kill you! If I don’t kill you, then I’m not a woman for the rest of my life!”
Charlotte Renard had just rushed over to help pull Sophia Reid free. Now she saw it wasn’t doing much, and seeing Sophia Reid in that state, she almost laughed too. Everyone could tell Sophia Reid wasn’t in real danger. She was just badly exposed. But Charlotte Renard also knew exactly what kind of temper Sophia Reid had.
So she hurried back over to Magnus Specter and lowered her voice.
“Xiao Fan, hurry up and help her. Don’t really drive her mad. Last night, you and Victoria Reyes, the three of you...”
“Last night?” Magnus Specter turned and looked at Charlotte Renard, surprised.
Charlotte Renard changed her words fast. “Anyway, whatever. Last night, if we hadn’t held her back, Xiaoxue really might’ve cut you off. Do what you want.”
