"That is him."

Maya pointed at Elion with a calm expression. Around him, a group of Archmages and one Grand Mage quietly moved into position.

Elion looked around, and he scoffed. He could not help it. This whole situation was actually funny. To understand how things had reached this point, one would have to go back a few moments.

After leaving the cavern with Maya, Elion quickly discovered that he had been the last one to leave the trial. That was rather surprising, considering he had finished his trials first, but of course, neither of them knew this, and that included him.

Everyone else was already there.

Zenovia, Aeron, the young ones, Uta and Yaana, as well as the armoured swordsman, Manfred. Apparently, it had not been that long since they themselves appeared. A little over half a day, at most.

When Elion found out that the others had not been given the honour of personally choosing their rewards, he was genuinely shocked. Perhaps it would have been wise to keep his own gains a secret, but when he casually asked Zenovia if she had received anything nice from her reward choices, the rest of them immediately realised that something was amiss.

Maya already knew that with Elion’s performance throughout the trial, his gains were bound to be the greatest.

Even so, when Elion accidentally revealed that he had been shown an enormous reward chamber filled with treasures to choose from, her expression turned green with envy, more so when he mentioned the number of rewards he had received.

She had only received three: a greater bloodline, which she had yet to integrate, and two artifacts. When Elion realised that not only were their rewards different, but the way they received them was also different, he finally understood that he should probably stop talking.

Unfortunately, the damage had already been done.

Even though he had not revealed exactly what he received, sometimes imagination was an even worse conspirator than truth. Maya and the others were already imagining that he must have obtained at least five Legendary-grade treasures among those ten rewards.

The fact that he had also become much taller since they last saw him only made their suspicions stronger.

It should not have been long since they separated, yet Elion had changed visibly. His frame was taller, broader, and far more imposing. Even with his draconic features hidden, simply standing near him felt uncomfortable now.

There was an oppressive quality around him. Like some ancient beast had taken human form and was merely pretending to be harmless.

Elion also found it interesting that Aeron and Zenovia were rather relaxed around Maya, despite her unexpected betrayal during the trial. They had probably spoken things through while waiting. In the end, it seemed they did not hold it against her too much.

It had only been a trial, after all. A matter of life and death, yes, but still a trial. Survival tactics were not always pretty.

Regardless, they had all decided to wait together because Maya had offered them a ride to the nearest city, Silvergrove.

From the heart of the forest, Silvergrove was two weeks away on foot, but only about a day’s journey by mount. No one saw any reason to refuse, so Elion decided to do the same.

All they had to do was wait for Maya’s escort. That alone told Elion a fair bit about her.

If she had an escort capable of reaching her so quickly, then she was most likely from an influential family, faction, or organisation. He also wondered what device she had used to contact them, since he had not seen anything obvious on her person.

And so, they waited. While they camped near the ruined cavern, Elion spent most of the time flirting with Zenovia and pestering her about what she planned to do after this. She ignored him for the most part. Naturally, Elion refused to be discouraged.

He also spoke with Yaana, who still seemed very curious about him, though she watched him with a little more ease than before, when she seemed wary of him.

Eventually, the shrill cry of a bird reached their ears.

Several figures descended from the sky on mounts of varying shapes and sizes. There were about ten of them in total, and the moment they landed, they greeted Maya with clear respect.

Elion observed them quietly. Almost all of them were dressed similarly to Manfred. The main difference was the sigil carved into their armour.

A sword piercing through a skull. The symbol appeared on each of their chest plates. Maya spoke with them for a little while.

No doubt they were discussing travel plans and whether her temporary companions would be given rides as well. Finally, the group approached Elion, Zenovia, and Aeron.

Maya’s expression remained calm, her eyes, however, narrowed dangerously. A faint smirk touched her lips as she lifted one hand and pointed directly at Elion.

"That is him."

And now, here they were.

A group of powerful Mages and warriors stood around him, their positions casual enough to appear polite at first glance, but far too deliberate to be anything other than a containment formation.

Elion looked from one face to another before he finally glanced at Maya. He could make a few guesses.

He had noticed the scheming look on her face after he mentioned receiving ten rewards. Perhaps she had already been eyeing him and his gains from the very beginning, or perhaps she had simply grown bold after her escort arrived.

Either way, it seemed he had misjudged her slightly. Elion shook his head in disappointment. And here he had decided to give a lady a second chance.

It seemed she had really come to hate him after he defeated her so brutally in the trial. Maybe she had never suffered such a terrible loss in her entire life.

’But damn! She is one petty bitch,’ Elion thought.

"Maya," Surprisingly, the one who spoke was not Elion. Aeron stepped forward slightly, his expression was calm but noticeably displeased, "Is this really necessary?"

"Step aside, Aeron," Maya said calmly.

Aeron did not, and this earned a sigh from Maya, who shook her head and looked at Elion, "I think you have misunderstood," she said. "I might be displeased with our loss, but I am not that petty."

Elion raised a questioning brow. He was not entirely convinced. At that moment, the heavily dressed woman standing at the centre of Maya’s escort stepped forward.

She was the only Grand Mage among them. Her robe was layered and elegant, decorated with silver threads. Her face carried the composed dignity of someone used to being obeyed, though there was a sharp glint in her eyes that made it clear she was far more dangerous than her refined appearance suggested.

"The Young Miss is right," the woman said. "But I guess I should apologise, our approach was not exactly comforting either."

Elion glanced at the Archmages and warriors still loosely surrounding him, "That is one way to put it."

The Grand Mage smiled, "It is simply difficult to believe what Lady Maya told us. Especially since you look so young."

Her gaze moved over him slowly, not in any predatory way, but with the clear scrutiny of someone measuring an unknown creature that she was very curious about.
