Elion ignored the strange looks he was receiving and returned her greeting.
"It is good to see you too, Yaana. Where is your brother?"
Yaana finally released his hands.
"He said he saw no benefit in coming to watch a duel whose outcome has already been decided."
She immediately realised that her words might offend Mayumi and quickly turned towards her, clasping her hands together apologetically.
Mayumi could only smile wryly while walking into position.
"Yaana," Marilyn called out.
"Oh, right."
Yaana realised she was supposed to move away, so she skipped over towards Zenovia before greeting her, Mira, and Zenith as well. She even went as far as complimenting them, happily declaring that all three of them were incredibly beautiful.
Elion turned his attention away from them and stepped onto the circular arena, where Mayumi was already waiting at the opposite end.
Marilyn took her position near the edge of the platform, since she would be overseeing the duel.
"Remember the rules," she reminded them. "Try to incapacitate your opponent without causing any grievous injuries if possible."
The two of them nodded, and the vibrant murmuring around the arena gradually died down.
Elion merely stood there with no weapon in his hands, and the sight caused Mayumi to frown.
"Aren’t you going to draw your sword?"
Elion raised a brow.
Why was she so certain that he was a swordsman?
"Do not give me that look," Mayumi said. "It takes one to know one." Yaana had actually told Mayumi that Elion was a swordsman, but she wasn’t going to tell him that.
Elion sighed.
He had promised himself that he would begin using magic more often, and he had intended to do exactly that during this duel. However, refusing to draw a sword now might make Mayumi believe he was underestimating her.
Regardless, Kurogoroshi would be complete overkill.
He still had not confirmed whether he could deactivate some of its enchantments, and he did not want to accidentally cause irreparable damage to her body or soul.
That left him with only one option.
He would have to borrow a sword from one of the spectators.
Elion turned towards the crowd gathered around the arena.
"Would anyone be willing to lend me a sword?"
Several people exchanged uncertain looks.
It was one thing to lend a training weapon to an ordinary member, but Elion was about to use it in a duel that would decide who entered the Legacy World. No one wanted to be blamed if their weapon broke at an important moment and cost him the match.
After a few seconds, a broad-shouldered swordsman near the front raised his hand.
"You can use mine."
He removed the large sword hanging from his waist and tossed it towards the arena.
Elion caught it easily by the sheath.
"Thanks. I will try to return it in one piece."
The man gave him a strained smile.
"I would appreciate that."
Elion drew the sword and examined it briefly.
It was an ordinary longsword with a straight, double-edged blade, lacking any particularly impressive enchantments.
The metal was of respectable quality, but it was still nothing more than a common weapon compared to the artifacts Elion normally carried.
It was also a bit off balance and much bigger than his preferred size, but it wouldn’t affect him much.
[Tempered Steel Longsword]
[Grade: Uncommon]
[Condition: Good]
[Enchantments: Minor Durability]
Despite its bigger size, the sword was light in his hand, perhaps a little too light now that his physical strength had increased so drastically, but it would serve its purpose.
He gave the weapon a few casual swings, carefully controlling his strength so that he did not accidentally damage it.
Mayumi watched every movement.
The relaxed way he held the blade immediately confirmed what she had suspected. Elion was not merely someone who had learned a few basic sword techniques.
His posture, though relaxed, was visibly very natural, and even the simplest movement contained a level of control that could only come from extensive practice.
However, the fact that he had chosen to borrow an ordinary sword still caused her brows to furrow.
"Do you not have a weapon of your own?"
"I do."
"Then why are you not using it?"
"My sword is a little excessive for a friendly duel."
A few murmurs spread through the spectators.
Mayumi’s expression remained stoic, but the slight narrowing of her eyes revealed that she did not appreciate his answer.
"You believe I cannot withstand the strength of your weapon?"
"I believe neither of us wants to discover what would happen if one of its enchantments caused irreparable damage. Believe me, this is for your sake."
That answer only made the crowd more curious.
Mayumi studied him for another moment before slowly drawing her own weapon.
The long, slender blade slid from its sheath without making the slightest sound.
It possessed only a single cutting edge, with a subtle curve running along its length. It was a similar style of weapon to Kurogoshi’s own.
The steel was pale and almost mirror-like, while delicate markings had been engraved near the guard.
A faint layer of mana rested over its surface, revealing that it was far superior to the sword Elion had borrowed.
Elion’s golden eye brightened.
[White Chrysanthemum]
[Grade: Rare]
[Type: Eastern Style Longsword]
[Enchantments: Enhanced Sharpness, Mana Conductivity, Edge Preservation]
[Additional information: A weapon created by the swordsmith Hideo Masamori for his youngest disciple, sold to her by a trusted merchant companion of his without her knowledge]
The additional information was curious, but he didn’t pay attention to it much.
What he was more interested in was the fact that the chrysanthemum in her hair was probably more than a simple choice of decoration.
Maybe the flower held some sort of significance to her.
Mayumi held the sword with both hands and lowered her body slightly, placing one foot behind the other.
"If your weapon breaks, I will allow you to replace it."
"Thank you, that is very considerate of you."
"I do not want anyone claiming that I won because your sword was inferior."
Elion smiled.
"I like your confidence."
"It is not confidence, just being fair."
That response only made his smile widen.
Marilyn stepped closer to the edge of the platform, raising one hand as the protective formations surrounding the arena began to glow.
A transparent barrier slowly rose around the circular stage, sealing the two combatants inside.
"Once again, deliberately killing or permanently crippling your opponent is forbidden," she announced. "Victory will be decided through surrender, unconsciousness, or my judgement that one participant can no longer continue."
Elion and Mayumi both nodded.
"Take your positions."
Mayumi moved towards her side of the arena.
Elion remained where he was, rolling his shoulders once before allowing the borrowed sword to hang loosely at his side.
The sight caused several spectators to whisper among themselves.
"He is leaving his entire upper body open."
"Does he not know how Mayumi fights?"
"She will cross the arena before he even has time to raise that sword."
"Perhaps he really is underestimating her."
Mira listened to the conversations without commenting.
Unlike them, she had seen a small portion of what Elion was capable of. Even before his latest transformation, his speed had already been terrifying.
Now, she was not certain whether Mayumi would even be able to force him to move seriously.
