Tessa’s mother raised the barrier higher.

"Are you two insane!?"

A flaming explosion erupted inside the wave as steam filled the entire building. The patriarch came bursting out of it, and Elion met him with a flaming fist.

BANG!

Their attacks collided, and fire exploded in every direction.

Elion grabbed the man’s wrist, and the patriarch grabbed his as both tried to overpower the other.

The floor cracked beneath their feet as muscles bulged and mana roared violently.

Elion gritted his teeth.

The patriarch’s smile shook with effort. For several seconds, neither moved, then both headbutted each other simultaneously.

CRACK!

They stumbled backwards.

Blood ran down Elion’s forehead, and the patriarch’s nose had begun bleeding again. Both looked at each other, and both smiled; then they charged again, with nothing but the intention to continue in their minds.

"ENOUGH!"

The strong voice thundered through the devastated dojo.

A pressure far more terrifying than either of them had expected crashed down between them.

Elion stopped, and the patriarch stopped.

Tessa’s mother stood several metres away. Her beautiful face no longer carried the slightest trace of amusement.

One eye twitched with anger.

Behind her, half the dojo looked as though a natural disaster had swept through it.

Two walls had collapsed, several pillars were broken, and a large section of the ceiling was missing.

The floor had been reduced to craters and cracks.

Training equipment lay scattered in pieces.

Several clansmen were wet while others were covered in dust. A few had minor cuts from flying debris.

One man was still pulling a splinter from his hair.

Tessa’s mother pointed towards the destruction with a trembling hand.

"LOOK AT MY DOJO!"

The patriarch blinked in tandem with Elion, and they both glanced around; only now did either of them seem to notice what they had done.

The patriarch cleared his throat.

"It can be repaired." His wife’s eye twitched once again, giving her husband a sharp glare.

He flinched and retracted his aura, turning back towards Elion.

"We are not finished."

Elion’s competitive spirit immediately flared again.

"Agreed."

Tessa’s mother looked at both of them.

"No."

"But..."

"No."

The patriarch frowned.

"I still need to put this brat in his place!"

Elion scoffed.

"You have been trying for the past twenty minutes."

"Do not get arrogant! I was just getting started!"

"So was I."

Flames began gathering around the patriarch again.

Elion’s mana stirred in response.

"Father!" Tessa cried.

Her mother’s expression darkened.

"If either of you throws one more punch..." Both men froze.

She smiled, but it was not a pleasant smile.

"...I will beat both of you myself."

Silence.

The patriarch’s flames vanished. Elion’s mana disappeared almost simultaneously, and his scales also slowly receded beneath his skin.

The savage fighting intent that had filled the dojo finally faded.

Elion looked down at himself to check his condition, immediately noting that his clothes were nearly destroyed.

Blood coated his lips and chin, and one side of his face was swollen. Bruises covered his body, and several shallow cuts ran across his arms and shoulders.

His knuckles were also torn open.

Tessa’s father was not much better.

His upper robe had been completely destroyed, blood ran from his nose, and one eye was swollen.

Several patches of his beard had been singed.

His chest and arms were covered in bruises, burns, and several shallow cuts left by Elion’s spells.

They simply stared at each other afterward. Then the patriarch began laughing again.

"Hahahahaha!"

Elion stared at him, and despite himself, he started laughing as well.

The surrounding clansmen looked between the two battered men with complicated expressions.

They had entered the fight expecting their patriarch to teach some arrogant young High Mage a lesson.

Instead, they had watched that same High Mage stand toe-to-toe with a Peak Grand Mage, survive everything thrown at him, force their patriarch to fight seriously, reveal a draconic trait, and nearly destroy the entire dojo in the process.

No one had won.

At least, not officially.

But there was no one present who could honestly claim that Elion had lost either.

Tessa’s father wiped the blood from beneath his nose and approached Elion with a shit-eating grin on his face.

...

Later that day...

The venue had been changed to somewhere far less battered, a ceremonial hall to be specific, and it was now vibrant with music, dancing, and laughter as people indulged in a lively feast.

Elion sat cross-legged near the back of the room, where Patriarch Crimson and several of the clan’s more important figures were seated.

"Say ahh..."

He opened his mouth for perhaps the hundredth time that afternoon as Aria fed him another chunky piece of beast meat from her fork.

Elion accepted it with a happy smile, and his cheeks immediately puffed out as he began chewing.

For some reason, Aria kept cutting and throwing in larger pieces of food than what a normal person would ever chew on in one go, but hey, he wasn’t complaining.

"Saank yoou," he muttered, his voice muffled by the food.

Pah!

A powerful slap suddenly struck him across the back.

Elion nearly choked on the meat before swallowing it down and shooting Tessa’s father an irritated glare.

"Baaaah!"

The older man released a satisfied exhale after taking several enormous gulps of beer from the gigantic cup in his hand.

"So tell me, you little bastard," he said, grinning broadly. "How the fuck do you have so many affinities!?"

He burst into laughter before Elion could even answer.

"And not just that! So many women as well! Hahahahaha! Was one not enough for you!?"

"What can I say?" Elion shrugged. "I just have too much charm."

His voice was dripping with sarcasm, earning another round of laughter from Paul Crimson, Tessa’s father.

"You can have my lovely daughter as well. Though you didn’t actually defeat me, I never expected you to actually do so. With your strength, you are more than worthy to court, and even wed her!"

The words earned a round of cheers and roars from the clansmen, and a furious blush from Tessa, who was seated further back with the other women.

Paul placed a strong hand on Elion’s shoulder.

"You are a strong one, son. I trust that you will take good care of her, and your other women as well."

Paul wore a stern expression as he gave Elion the bit of advice, but the flushed expression on his face from all the drinking made it difficult to take him completely seriously.

Elion was more disturbed by the fact that Paul thought he was deserving of Tessa just because he had managed to give him a good fight.

Still, Elion nodded with a smile.

"I will."

Tessa’s father certainly had quite the personality.

The man was carefree, at least from what Elion had seen, and it was clear that he was loved by his people. Honestly, Elion could see why. It was difficult not to like the man.

Thinking back to their earlier fight, Elion couldn’t help but smile.

If he had actually used everything at his disposal, defeating Paul would have been a relatively less messy affair. But that was precisely why he had chosen not to.

He had wanted to fight the man on his own terms, relying mostly on his physical abilities, spells, and combat instincts rather than overwhelming him with the more ridiculous abilities he had acquired recently.

It hadn’t gone exactly as he had intended, seeing as he hadn’t won the fight. In fact, Paul had pushed him far harder than he had expected.

But that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The battle had been a good one, and in the end, Elion had gained something arguably more valuable than an easy victory.

Paul’s approval.

Judging from the way the man was now treating him, it seemed that the brawl had been more than enough to earn it.

Elion couldn’t help but grin.

’That was a damn good fight, though.’

He had completely lost himself in the brawl, and he didn’t even realise when it happened. His pride and fighting intent had been scratched in a way no one had ever done before.

And the fight being so close and so evenly matched made the whole thing even better than it otherwise could have been.

He devoured another big chunk of meat that Aria had presented before, happily chewing away, as he allowed himself to relax by another measure, while sharing some words with Paul in between.

Further back, however, one woman did not seem nearly as amused by the two men’s sudden closeness.

Teressa scoffed.

"Men. Not too long ago, they were trying to punch each other’s teeth out, and now they’re suddenly the best of friends. Unbelievable!"

Teressa shook her head before looking toward a smiling Zenith.

"Thank you so much, darling, for healing those two fools and for taking care of most of the damage to the dojo as well."

Undoing the damage using the stone had been a simple matter for Zenith, especially since she had wanted to try out that particular ability to get an understanding of what the Philosopher’s stone was capable of.

"It was no problem at all," Zenith replied kindly.

There was something oddly skewed about her smile from Teressa’s point of view, though she couldn’t quite put her finger on what it was.

"But next time, when you talk, do bear in mind that hubby is not a foo...."

"Ahahahaha!" Mira suddenly cut in, placing a hand over Zenith’s mouth before she could finish.

"What she is trying to say is that the men simply got a bit carried away there."

She gave Zenith a pointed look that practically screamed, ’Read the room!’

Mira was well aware that Zenith was still getting accustomed to basic human etiquette, familial relationships, sarcasm, and all the other little nuances of human interaction.

While she did get most things right at times, there were also moments like these, especially when Elion wasn’t close enough to keep an eye on things and send her subtle signals, when her tongue simply went haywire.
