"What the hell is that?"
Ramon squinted.
"Looks like a cloud."
"A cloud doesn’t spin like that."
"Maybe it’s a magical cloud."
"You’re an idiot."
"Well! I’m drunk!"
"Then you are a drunk idiot!"
The sphere suddenly pulsed.
BOOM!
A shockwave tore across the ocean, and the fishing vessel rocked violently beneath their feet.
Several fishermen were thrown against the deck, while bottles and equipment went flying.
Sam grabbed the railing.
"WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!?"
The captain’s face had gone pale.
"Keep turning!"
The ship began veering desperately to the side, but it was already too late. The dark sphere had stopped expanding.
A faint humming sound began to radiate from its depths, but it was so low that it was much easier to feel than to hear.
Everyone aboard watched it in dreadful anticipation, waiting for some great horror to emerge, yet nothing happened.
The violent rocking gradually subsided, and the waves calmed.
Even the strange sphere remained perfectly still as the ship continued sailing past it. Several tense minutes passed, but nothing happened.
Eventually, the fishing vessel had safely sailed beyond the sphere of darkness. Sam slowly lowered himself against the railing, his legs still trembling.
"What... do you think that is?"
Ramon shook his head.
"I don’t know, but I do know one thing."
He glanced back at the strange phenomenon.
"We should leave these great mysteries to capable mages who actually know how to deal with this sort of thing. As for us, I’d rather get away from this damned floating hole before something comes out of it and kills us."
Sam’s eyes suddenly brightened.
"You know what else has glorious holes, Ramon!?"
Ramon’s expression immediately turned into one of exhausted disbelief as he slowly understood what his dear friend meant to say.
"Shut up!" He hissed.
He didn’t even need to hear the rest.
Somehow, this idiot had the gall to start making those dirty jokes in the middle of what could potentially be a life-threatening situation.
And yet, perhaps that was precisely why Sam was still capable of making them.
It was either laugh or panic.
Fortunately for both of them, their captain was considerably more sensible.
The moment they were safely beyond the strange phenomenon, he ordered the ship to turn around.
The massive vessel made a wide U-turn before beginning the journey back toward Haven.
Nobody complained, of course.
The nets were hauled aboard, the sails were adjusted, and the fishermen kept a wary eye on the distant sphere until it eventually disappeared beyond the horizon.
Whatever that strange phenomenon was, it was far beyond their understanding.
And if something truly dangerous was lurking within it, the people of Haven deserved to know.
The captain intended to report everything they had witnessed the moment they returned.
...
"So, it’s begun then?"
"Seems like it."
The following morning, a pair of mages dressed in beautiful, loose-fitting red robes with the emblem of a phoenix could be seen floating a short distance away from the enormous hole that had appeared over the Southern Ocean.
The strange phenomenon had grown considerably larger overnight.
What had once been only a few metres across had now expanded into a vast, swirling distortion in space, its edges constantly rippling as though reality itself were struggling to contain whatever lay beyond it.
One of the mages was a woman with short, dark hair and a sharp, serious expression.
The other was a bald, round-bellied middle-aged man who floated comfortably beside her with his arms crossed over his stomach, seemingly unconcerned by the immense spatial anomaly before them.
The woman spoke again.
"When His Majesty King Alexander entrusted us with investigating this place, he did mention that there was a chance this would be the opening of the Legacy World."
She narrowed her eyes as she stared into the distortion.
"I didn’t believe it at first, but this is definitely it."
The man’s expression became more serious.
The woman frowned.
"What happened, though? Weren’t the coordinates established months ago in the Great Forest?"
She gestured toward the enormous spatial gate.
"How did the entrance suddenly appear here?"
The middle-aged man stroked his chin.
"Or perhaps this is another entrance?"
"That can’t be." The woman immediately shook her head. "There has never been a recorded instance of two entrances appearing during the same opening."
The man’s brows furrowed.
"True." He stared silently at the gate. "But nothing else makes sense."
His gaze shifted toward the strange distortions surrounding the entrance, through which faint glimpses of another world could occasionally be seen.
"Perhaps this is the first instance in history."
The woman remained silent.
Neither possibility was particularly reassuring.
After a moment, the man sighed.
"Either way, we should wait to hear from the group stationed at the original coordinates."
He paused.
"Maybe the entrance changed coordinates somehow. There is no way for us to know until we hear from them."
The woman nodded.
"Then what do we do in the meantime?"
"One of us should remain here." The man glanced down toward the distant ocean. "We can’t have some wandering fool discovering this place and deciding to test their luck."
The woman gave him a sideways glance.
"You say that as though you wouldn’t have done the exact same thing when you were younger."
The man’s expression stiffened.
"I was a responsible young man."
She stared at him.
He coughed awkwardly into his fist.
"Mostly."
The woman rolled her eyes.
"Fine. I’ll stay."
The man nodded.
"Good. I’ll return to Haven and report everything we’ve seen."
He turned toward the distant coastline.
Before leaving, however, he looked back at the enormous gate one final time and gave his companion a final nod.
Whoosh!
Then his figure shot into the distance, rapidly disappearing toward Haven. Once the woman was alone, she let out a long, exasperated sigh.
"Finally..."
She rolled her shoulders before slowly craning her neck from side to side.
Crack.
A satisfied smile appeared on her face.
"Ahhhh... how nice it feels to have such a young body." She stretched her arms above her head, seemingly enjoying every second of it.
"It’s a shame, though..."
Her smile faded slightly as she glanced down at her hands.
"...that it’s only at the Grand Mage stage."
She sighed again.
"Still, I suppose I can’t complain."
Her gaze drifted toward the enormous spatial gate.
After all, having a second chance at youth was already something most people could only dream of.
