At the time, he only thought it was another form of the Lumos charm.
Now that he thought about it, that was not the Lumos charm at all. That was his bloodline power, quietly manifesting in the form of "light."
Edward slowly raised his hand, palm upward. He concentrated his mind, trying to invoke that familiar warm sensation.
A wisp of a faint flame rose in his palm, dancing and flickering. He did not chant, he did not use a wand. He was just thinking.
The flame gradually grew larger, wrapping around his palm, yet it did not burn him in the slightest. He could clearly feel that the flame and his body were one - it was not an external force; it was a part of his body.
Ecstasy flooded him like a tide.
He had finally found it! He had found another characteristic of his power!
Professor Flitwick was right; his power was not the aberration of an Obscurial, nor was it a loss of magical control. This was the awakening of his bloodline. It was the elemental power passed down by ancient wizards, using oneself as a medium!
His research direction was finally clear.
He no longer needed to search for records about "magical aberration." What he needed to research was the deep connection between bloodline and elements, the transformation of the body and flame, and the source power of wandless magic!
Edward carefully returned the magic-Eating Tome to its original place and checked it again to make sure he hadn't left any traces. He knew that this matter must never be known by anyone - if Madam Pince discovered he had disturbed a dangerous book, she would immediately terminate his access; and if other professors found out... the consequences would be unimaginable.
He took a deep breath, suppressed the excitement in his heart, and turned to walk toward the entrance of the Restricted Section.
Madam Pince looked up at him, saw his calm expression, and noticed he wasn't holding any books, so she lowered her head and continued to organize her accounts.
Edward walked quickly out of the library; the winter wind blew against his face, but it could not blow away the burning heat in his heart. He walked into the castle corridor, watching the snowflakes falling outside the window, the flame at his fingertips dancing silently inside his sleeve.
What he did not know was that while he was immersed in the ecstasy of his power awakening, a storm was quietly brewing in another corner of Hogwarts.
In Hagrid's hut, a dragon egg quietly cracked open in the residual heat of the fireplace. A few days later, a small dragon covered in dark green scales broke out of its shell, and Hagrid named it Norbert - it was a precious Norwegian Ridgeback, a magical creature that the Ministry of Magic strictly forbade from being kept privately. Harry, Ron, and Hermione became the guardians of this secret, sneaking to the hut every day to feed Norbert milk and raw meat, taking care of this fragile little life in a flurry.
But the secret could not be kept for long. Draco Malfoy followed the trail and found Hagrid's hut, caught Norbert in the act, and immediately reported it to Professor McGonagall.
The punishment came quickly. On the weekend morning, before dawn, Harry, Ron, and Draco were called to Professor McGonagall's office. Their punishment was to assist Hagrid in checking for injured Unicorns in the Forbidden Forest late at night - recently, the wails of Unicorns had been heard in the Forbidden Forest, clearly because some dark creature was coveting the blood of these pure creatures.
Night shrouded the Forbidden Forest, the cold was bone-chilling, and the mist in the woods was as thick as undissolvable milk. Hagrid walked at the very front holding a lantern, the halo of the lantern swaying in the darkness, illuminating the winding path under their feet. Draco was pale with fright, following closely behind Hagrid, not even daring to breathe loudly; Harry and Ron walked behind, their palms full of cold sweat, feeling that every insect chirping and beast roar in the forest held an unease he could not quite name.
They patrolled for most of the night without encountering any suspicious figures, only seeing a pool of undried silver-white blood in a clearing, as well as a few blood-stained silver-white hairs. Hagrid's face sank instantly; he crouched down, his fingertips brushing over the pool of blood, and cursed in a low voice, his tone full of heartache.
The next morning, news of the Unicorn being harmed in the Forbidden Forest spread throughout the castle.
In the Great Hall, students gathered in twos and threes, whispering about this matter. Some said that Unicorns were the purest creatures in the wizarding world, and harming them would bring a terrible curse; others said that drinking Unicorn blood could prolong life but required the price of eternal damnation, and only a desperate Dark wizard would do such a heinous thing. Harry and Ron sat at the Gryffindor table, their faces pale as they picked at the fried eggs on their plates, the chill from the Forbidden Forest last night seemingly still lingering in their marrow. Hermione was flipping through a copy of Magical Creatures Protection Act", her brows furrowed, muttering to herself: "It must be the followers of the Dark Lord; only they would be so unscrupulous."
Meanwhile, clues about Nicolas Flamel also made progress under Hermione's investigation. She spent almost as much time in the library as Edward, and finally, in a remnant page of List of Alchemists, she found the name - Nicolas Flamel, born in 1327 AD, the oldest living alchemist and the only creator of the Philosopher's Stone. And the secret of the Philosopher's Stone was vaguely linked to the Hogwarts treasure guarded by Dumbledore.
Harry also inadvertently discovered the Mirror of Erised at the end of the fourth-floor corridor. The mirror had an ornate frame, with a line of strange text carved on the top. He saw his parents, whom he had never met, in the mirror, watching them smile gently at him, so every night, he would sneak to the end of the corridor and stand in front of the mirror for a long time, greedily watching the phantom in the mirror, unable to bear leaving.
Edward knew nothing of these things.
He and Harry Potter remained two parallel lines.
One line was exploring the secrets of bloodline and elements, moving forward step by step on the path of power awakening; the other line was sniffing the scent of darkness in the bloodstains of the Forbidden Forest, sinking deeper and deeper into the mystery of the Philosopher's Stone and the phantoms of the Mirror of Erised.
The Christmas holidays were getting closer.
The students in the castle began to excitedly discuss their plans for going home, discussing Christmas gifts, and discussing gingerbread and hot cocoa by the fireplace.
Edward stood by the window, looking toward the Forbidden Forest outside, the flame at his fingertips dancing gently. He vaguely felt that the atmosphere in the castle seemed to be changing quietly; some undercurrent was surging beneath the calm surface.
But he didn't think too much about it.
His mind was full of the connection between bloodline and fire, full of new research directions.
His research had only just begun.
And the storm of Hogwarts was already close at hand.
The intersection of the two parallel lines had also quietly entered the countdown.
The Christmas holidays at Hogwarts were just around the corner. The castle was filled with the sweet scent of gingerbread and hot cocoa. The vaulted ceilings of the corridors were draped with holly wreaths adorned with bells and colorful baubles, and the fires in the fireplaces crackled, warming the students' laughter. Yet, all this bustle had nothing to do with Edward Black.
