Roxanne’s pulse pounded loudly in her ears, her chest heaving as she searched the unreadable faces around the table. "What is happening?" she demanded, her voice cutting through the thick quiet.
The PR director leaned back in her chair, keeping her lips pressed into a tight line.
"Why are you not saying anything?" Roxanne asked, her eyes darting across the room before snapping to Richard. "What did she mean by that?"
Richard exhaled a heavy breath and shook his head. "The press conference is in fifteen minutes."
Roxanne froze, disbelief twisting her features. She looked at each executive, then at the bright video screen on the wall, before turning back to Richard. "You are calling a press conference for Cara? For her baseless claims?"
"It is the best course of action," the PR director cut in, tapping her tablet with a sharp, rhythmic click. "We need to nip this in the bud immediately."
"We do need to stop it, yes," Roxanne countered, her voice rising with sudden heat. "But is this the right way? Absolutely not." She reached across the polished wood, her hand finding Richard’s forearm. "We have to cancel the press conference right now, Richard. Please."
"What? No way!" The PR director shook her head, leaning forward. "We cannot do that unless the president gives the direct order. And as director of PR, I strongly advise against it."
Roxanne ignored the woman completely, squeezing Richard’s hand. The subtle heat of his skin anchored her despite the chaos in her mind. "Cancel it, Richard. Trust me. It is the right move."
Richard looked at her, his eyes searching her face, taking in her steady gaze and the fierce resolve behind it.
Roxanne held his gaze, her heart hammering against her ribs as she waited for his call. "Trust me, Richard."
Richard let out a soft sigh, his fingers tightening briefly over hers. "Are you sure about this?"
"I am certain," she whispered.
Richard turned his head toward the PR director, his posture straightening instantly. "Cancel it," he commanded, his tone sharp and absolute.
The PR director’s eyes widened. "Are you sure? I strongly advise against this," she insisted, her voice rising in panic. "It will look suspicious. The press will have a field day with a sudden cancellation. What reason do we even give them?"
"Whether we call it off or not, the press will twist the story," Roxanne said calmly, resting her hands flat on the table. "That is what they do. They are the least of our worries right now. Cara is."
Richard nodded in agreement. "I trust Roxanne. Cancel the press conference immediately. And hold off on the legal letter," he added, glancing at the head of legal.
The PR director scoffed, muttering under her breath as she tapped her phone to make the call. After a few tense moments, she lowered the device and let out a sharp breath. "It is done." She turned a cold glare onto Roxanne. "What now? Do we just sit back and watch?"
A small smile touched Roxanne’s lips. "Let them speculate. Every minute we spend defending ourselves gives Cara another minute in the spotlight," she said. "We don’t need to win the news cycle today. We need to make sure Cara doesn’t control tomorrow’s."
Surprise rippled across the room. Even Richard’s brows pulled together, but he said nothing. He simply leaned back in his chair, giving her the floor.
"We all have actual work to do instead of wasting the entire day on Cara," Roxanne said, her voice smooth as silk. "She is not bringing a single penny into this company. Let those who are involved deal with her directly."
The PR director exchanged a skeptical glance with the legal chief.
"You do realize Cara is trying to drag this entire company down over a personal grudge?" the legal head asked, adjusting his glasses.
Roxanne smiled, her eyes cool and unwavering. "And that is exactly why we will not let her."
"Clear the room," Richard ordered, his voice leaving no room for debate.
Heavy chairs scraped loudly against the floor as the executives gathered their files and walked out into the corridor. On the wall screen, the corporate attorneys disconnected, leaving only Margaret’s feed active.
Margaret leaned closer to her camera, her brow furrowed into deep lines. "Now that it is just the three of us. Richard, why did you keep this from me? If you had told me Cara was pregnant, I would have handled her myself."
Disgust pooled in Roxanne’s stomach, but she kept her mouth shut, letting Richard speak.
Richard’s jaw set into a rigid line. "I have nothing to do with Cara, and you know that better than anyone," he said, his deep voice laced with anger. "The only woman carrying my child is Roxanne. That is the truth."
Margaret stared at him through the screen for a long moment. She let out a dry sigh and shifted her sharp gaze to Roxanne. "I hope that after shutting down hours of strategizing, you actually have a plan to handle this."
Roxanne met her gaze without flinching. "Margaret, the first thing you should do is take accountability for your own role in this mess. If you had not spent months encouraging Cara to think she could have Richard, she would have moved on long ago. If you had not brought her into Richard’s home uninvited last night, none of this would be happening. You owe us an apology first."
Margaret’s face darkened, her eyes narrowing into sharp slits. "You do not speak to me in that manner, Roxanne. Let that be very clear." She turned back to her son. "I am done here. Fix it, Richard."
Before he could answer, the screen went black as she ended the call.
Roxanne let out a quiet scoff, shaking her head. When she turned back toward the table, she caught Richard watching her.
"Are you completely sure about taking this on?" Richard asked softly.
Roxanne nodded, her chest settling into a steady rhythm. "Yes, Richard. It is time for me to fight. I will not hide behind you or anyone else this time. When I am finished, everyone will know better than to mess with my family."
Richard stared at her, admiration gleaming in his eyes, before he gave a slow nod. "What do you need from me?"
"Just do not do anything drastic," she said, offering him a faint smile.
Richard chuckled quietly, the sound deep and low in his chest. "Fine."
Just then, a sharp knock sounded at the door. They both looked up as the door swung open.
Libby stepped into the room, holding an IP phone in her hand, her expression completely neutral. "I am sorry to interrupt, Mr. Vance, but Miss Cara is on line one."
Richard and Roxanne exchanged a quick glance. They both smiled.
