"What is so funny?" Christian snapped, his brows twisting into a tight knot of irritation. He took a step closer, his breath hot against her face. "Wipe that ridiculous look off your face, Roxanne."
Roxanne’s smile only widened, the cool metal of the doorframe beneath her palm anchoring her. "Oh, I’m smiling because you’re about to find out something that is going to ruin your entire year, Christian."
Christian stared at her, his chest rising and falling as he searched her face for a bluff. Slowly, a harsh, mocking laugh burst from his throat.
"And what exactly do you plan to do? Call your little billionaire boyfriend? Or maybe his criminal family?" He shook his head, his laughter sounding increasingly forced. "News flash, Roxy. Not even they can save you from this."
Roxanne looked at him, her eyes softening with genuine pity. "Do you really think that’s the worst I can do?"
The amusement faded from Christian’s face, replaced by a subtle, uneasy twitch in his jaw as he let go of the door. His eyes scanned hers, trying to read the quiet confidence radiating from her.
"What else could you possibly do?" he muttered, his voice dropping into an apprehensive tone.
Right on cue, a sharp ping vibrated from the phone clutched in Roxanne’s hand. She glanced down at the screen. A text from Richard’s contact, the Chief of Police, flashed on the display: Unit is arriving now.
A slow, triumphant smile crept back onto her face.
Christian shifted his weight from one foot to the other, his gaze darting from her face to the phone and back. "What is going on? Who is that?"
Roxanne’s smile vanished. She locked her eyes onto his, her voice dropping into a cold calm. "You have exactly thirty seconds to open this door and let me take my things back inside. Otherwise, you’re going to wish you had never locked me out."
For a fleeting second, the arrogant facade crumbled. Roxanne watched the color begin to drain from his face, a deeply satisfying warmth pooling in her chest.
"Get out of the way, Christian," she warned softly.
Christian’s face suddenly hardened, his pride fighting to reassert itself. "Or what?"
Roxanne merely narrowed her eyes, keeping her gaze steady.
"I knew it!" Christian scoffed and let out a shaky laugh. "You’ve got nothing. You’re bluffing."
"Am I?" She tilted her head, her smile returning like a predator cornering its prey.
Christian swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing nervously. "Yes," he said, nodding quickly as if trying to convince himself more than her.
Roxanne simply nodded back, her eyes locked on his.
Then, cutting through the heavy tension of the afternoon, the low, wailing whoop of a police siren began to echo down the street.
Christian’s eyes widened, his head snapping toward the sound. His jaw dropped as he looked back at her, his face pale. "Did you—?" He paused, the sound of wailing drawing closer. "Did you seriously call Richard to do this to me?"
Roxanne didn’t answer. She calmly crossed her arms over her chest, watching him unravel.
"You must be out of your absolute mind!" Christian hissed, his voice cracking as a marked police cruiser came into view, its blue and red lights painting the driveway in strobes of color. "You think they’re going to help you? You’re delusional!"
Roxanne ignored him entirely, turning her back on his frantic breathing to face the cruiser as it came to a halt in front of the lawn. The heavy car doors clicked open, and two uniformed officers stepped out, adjusting their utility belts as they made a direct path toward the porch.
Around the quiet street, the commotion was already drawing attention. Neighboring curtains twitched, front doors opened, and a few people stepped out onto their manicured lawns to watch the drama unfold.
Before Roxanne could even greet the officers, Christian rushed down the steps, his gait unsteady. "Officers! Thank god you’re here!" he shouted, his voice unnecessarily loud as he gestured wildly toward Roxanne. "You have to remove her immediately! She is trespassing on private property! She’s right over there!"
Roxanne stood her ground, her expression perfectly serene. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a teenager standing near the hedges, their smartphone raised and recording. Of course, she thought, but she refused to let it shake her.
"Please step back and remain calm, sir," the lead officer said, his tone flat, professional, and entirely unimpressed by Christian’s hysterics. He looked at Christian, then shifted his gaze to Roxanne.
"No, I will not be calm!" Christian yelled, his face flushed and venomous. "I want her off my property once and for all! I’ve already thrown her things out, you just need to make sure she leaves this instant!"
Roxanne remained silent, her posture elegant and unbothered.
The lead officer stepped up onto the porch, offering Roxanne a respectful nod. "My name is Officer Timmons, ma’am," he said. Then he looked down, his eyes moving over the clothes. Silk dresses. Designer shoes. Torn garment bags.
He slowly looked back at Christian. "You threw all of this outside?"
"Yes!" Christian said firmly.
Officer Timmons looked at the scattered clothes on the dusty ground once more before returning to Roxanne. "Are these your belongings?"
Roxanne looked down at the ruined silk, swallowing a brief wave of annoyance before looking the officer in the eye. "Yes, Officer. They are mine."
Before Timmons could speak, Christian shoved his way back into the space. "Yes, they’re hers! I threw them out because I want nothing to do with her!" he ranted, a desperate sweat breaking out on his forehead. "I’m sure you’ve seen the news. She’s been sleeping with my boss, and I am exercising my right to kick her out!"
"And I’ve already warned him that he has no right to do that," Roxanne said, her voice cutting through his panic like a scalpel. She looked directly at Officer Timmons. "He does not have the authority."
"And why the hell don’t I?" Christian spat, glaring at her with pure malice.
Roxanne met his gaze head-on, her voice ringing out clearly for the officers, the neighbors, and the teenager’s camera to hear.
"Because this penthouse belongs to me, Christian. And if anyone is leaving today, it’s going to be you."
Christian froze, the blood completely draining from his face. He opened his mouth, but no words came out.
