Roxanne held her ground, her spine rigid as she faced him. She turned slightly, presenting the yellowed paper to the police like a shield.
"This is the proof," she said, her voice steady and clear. "He has no claim to this house. None whatsoever."
Christian stared at the paper, his eyes darting across the faded text. Roxanne could practically hear the frantic gears turning in his head, but she knew him too well, he was cornered, and there was no way out of this one.
He took a sudden, aggressive step forward, his brow furrowing deeply as he reached out. "Let me see that."
Roxanne’s eyes narrowed. "What?"
"I said hand it over," Christian demanded, extending a trembling hand toward the document. "I want to see it with my own eyes."
Roxanne immediately pulled the paper back against her chest, shaking her head. "No, Christian. I’m not handing anything to you. I don’t trust you." She turned to Officer Timmons, offering the document with a respectful nod. "I’m handing this directly to the officers."
Christian’s fingers twitched in the empty air, hovering as if he might try to snatch it anyway. "Give it to me! I know it’s not real. It can’t be real," he muttered, his voice cracking with a desperate undercurrent of denial.
"Give it up, Christian," Roxanne said, her voice softening with weary disgust. "We both know this house is mine. You only asked to stay here until you landed your job at Vance Enterprises. And even when you went back on your word and we stayed here, I didn’t push. Why don’t you do the honorable thing for once and just leave peacefully?"
Christian didn’t even look at her. His eyes were glued to the document as Officer Timmons and his partner murmured to each other, examining the text. Unable to contain himself, Christian reached out and snatched the deed right from the officer’s hand.
He stared down at the paper, the smugness briefly draining from his face, leaving him utterly pale.
"Yes, Christian, that is the proof," Roxanne said, watching him closely, hoping against hope that this would finally be the end of it. "My name is written clearly on the title. Now get your things and leave. You are no longer welcome under my roof."
Christian’s face twisted, but he kept his eyes locked onto the paper, desperately searching the lines for a loophole. Roxanne held her breath, her heart hammering a nervous rhythm against her ribs.
Then, Christian’s lips slowly curled into a cold, menacing smile.
Roxanne’s stomach sank. Why is he smiling? The deed was real, and he knew it. Why on earth was he smiling?
Christian ran a slow finger over the face of the document. He finally lifted his head, completely bypassing Roxanne’s gaze to look straight at the officers. "This is a fake."
"What?" Officer Timmons asked, his brow furrowing.
Roxanne felt the blood rush out of her face. "That’s impossible. It’s real."
The officers stepped closer, taking the deed back from Christian’s grip. They huddled together, murmuring as they inspected the paper again, their heads shaking slightly.
"What the hell are you playing at, Christian?" Roxanne demanded, stepping toward him, her hands curling into fists. "You know—"
"Quiet, Roxanne," Christian snapped, his tone sharp and dismissive. "I’m talking to the officers, not you."
Officer Timmons rubbed his thumb over the edge of the paper. "This deed looks very authentic to me, sir. Are we missing something here?"
Roxanne let out a frustrated laugh. "Please stop letting him play these useless games. We both know that deed is as real as day and night."
Christian puffed his chest out, a sickening wave of smugness radiating from him as he took control. "Look at the seal at the very bottom of the page," he instructed, pointing.
The officers’ eyes followed his finger.
"Now, feel it," Christian said.
Officer Timmons pressed his thumb against the gold emblem at the bottom, followed quickly by the second officer.
"Christian, what is the meaning of this?" Roxanne asked, her chest tightening as a cold sweat broke out along the back of her neck.
Christian finally turned his gaze to her, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. "An original deed has engraved, raised markings from the state seal," he said, before turning back to the police. "But that paper is completely smooth. It’s a flat print. This isn’t a deed. It’s nothing but a forged copy."
Roxanne scoffed, shaking her head as she struggled to keep her voice steady. "There is a massive difference between a fake and a copy. That is a certified copy, not a forgery."
"Then where is the original?" Christian shot back, his voice rising as he looked directly at her. "Bring out the original! Anyone can print a copy from a computer and make a claim. Show me the original deed with the raised seal, and I will pack my bags and walk out of here right now."
Roxanne froze, her chest heaving as she stared at him. She closed her eyes for a brief second, letting out a slow, trembling breath. "I don’t have the original here."
"Aha! Because it doesn’t exist!" Christian shouted, his voice booming across the lawn for the neighbors and the teenager’s camera to record.
"That is not true!" Roxanne countered, her voice tight.
Christian scoffed, turning a theatrical look of pity toward the police. "Officers, ask her why she tried to deceive all of us with a cheap copy. Why didn’t you tell us from the start that this wasn’t the real document, Roxanne?"
Roxanne stared at him, her throat tight, unable to find the words to explain.
Officer Timmons sighed, his expression shifting from professional curiosity to mild skepticism. He looked at Roxanne, his brow furrowing. "Where is the original document, ma’am?"
Roxanne pressed her lips into a thin, rigid line, the weight of the afternoon finally crushing down on her shoulders.
"I don’t have it," she whispered.
Christian let out a loud, mocking laugh, his lips pulling back into a victorious smirk as he threw his head back in triumph.
