Su Zhaozhao didn’t know when Xie Huaizheng had shown up, but right now, his gaze was fixed on her and the man in front of her.
It was tinged with a hint of scrutiny.
’He hasn’t misunderstood my relationship with this soldier, has he?’
She quickly ran up, reached out, and wrapped her arms around Xie Huaizheng’s arm.
"I won my bet with Zhou Chengguo!"
Xie Huaizheng looked down at the brilliant smile on the girl’s face. Her eyes were sparkling as she gazed at him, like stars in the night sky.
’She’s so beautiful.’
The corners of his thin lips curved up. He reached out and gently pinched Su Zhaozhao’s cheek. "Zhaozhao, you’re amazing."
This was sincere praise from Xie Huaizheng.
Su Zhaozhao was indeed amazing. He hadn’t expected her to actually succeed in her interview for the English teacher position at the military district’s elementary school.
Her English proficiency was probably even better than the average university student’s.
"So from now on, does that mean I get to call you Teacher Su?"
Being called that by Xie Huaizheng made Su Zhaozhao’s cheeks feel inexplicably warm.
’Come to think of it, I’m a teacher now?’
It had felt fine during the interview, but hearing Xie Huaizheng say it now, she quickly replied, "Don’t... I’m not worthy of the title."
"Don’t be so modest, Zhaozhao."
Xie Huaizheng reached out and put his arm around Su Zhaozhao’s shoulders.
He gazed down at Su Zhaozhao, but sensing a stare from a short distance away, he lifted his eyes and glanced over.
When Xie Huaizheng recalled who the man was, the smile on his face faded slightly.
He had seen him before.
The last time, during dinner with Zhou Chengguo, Su Zhaozhao’s gaze had rested on this man for quite some time.
The man was indeed quite handsome. He was wearing a training uniform, so it was impossible to tell which camp he belonged to.
The other man nodded at him but didn’t say anything more.
Xie Huaizheng pulled Su Zhaozhao closer. "Since you’re done, let’s go eat."
He had been worried about Su Zhaozhao, which was why he came to the military district’s elementary school right after finishing his training.
"Okay."
After replying, Su Zhaozhao turned her head to look at Xie Huaizhen.
She found that he was also staring at her.
"Thank you for today," Su Zhaozhao said to him.
Then she pulled Xie Huaizheng away. Most likely, they would have no reason to interact again in the future.
Unless Zhou Chengguo was really that shameless and refused to leave, in which case she would have no choice but to have this man step forward as a witness to get rid of him.
At this thought, Su Zhaozhao couldn’t help but sigh.
"Is he that good-looking?" a chilly male voice sounded by Su Zhaozhao’s ear.
Su Zhaozhao looked up and met Xie Huaizheng’s dark, gloomy eyes. He was staring at her with a blank, severe, and cold expression.
Snapping back to her senses, Su Zhaozhao immediately said, "Of course not as good-looking as you."
"Let’s go. I got up early this morning to prepare, and now I’m thirsty and hungry."
She hadn’t even slept well last night because she didn’t want to lose and had to be fully prepared.
To keep Xie Huaizheng from getting needlessly jealous, Su Zhaozhao explained, "That soldier is a friend of Zhou Chengguo’s. I just asked him to be a witness because he happened to be there when I made the bet. We probably won’t have any contact in the future. Camp Commander Xie, don’t worry, I am absolutely loyal to you!"
As she spoke, Su Zhaozhao even raised her hand as if taking an oath.
"You’re very self-aware, Comrade Little Su," Xie Huaizheng said, pinching Su Zhaozhao’s cheek.
’If it weren’t for all the people here,’ he thought, ’I definitely wouldn’t be able to stop myself from kissing Su Zhaozhao.’
But for now, he had to restrain himself.
The man’s Adam’s apple bobbed involuntarily.
From the very first glance, Xie Huaizheng had felt an inexplicable sense of wariness regarding that man.
Thankfully, Su Zhaozhao had said they wouldn’t interact again. Otherwise, he might not have been able to resist investigating the man.
With that, Xie Huaizheng decided not to dwell on the matter of that man any longer.
"Come on, let’s get you some meat to eat."
"Oh, right, Huai Zheng, when Zhou Chengguo really does leave the elementary school, can you help me keep an eye on him? He seemed a little unhinged today."
"I know. Don’t worry. As long as we’re around here, no one can hurt you."
If he couldn’t even protect his own woman on his own turf, Xie Huaizheng felt he would be truly useless.
Xie Huaizheng’s words put Su Zhaozhao completely at ease.
She didn’t plan on leaving the area anytime soon anyway. If she were to go somewhere further away, she’d have Xie Huaizheng accompany her.
With her terrible luck, there was no telling what kind of trouble she might run into otherwise.
Meanwhile, Xie Huaizhen walked slowly toward the military district.
At that moment, his heart was a whirlwind of emotions.
Xie Huaizheng didn’t recognize him, but he recognized Xie Huaizheng.
The man’s name was quite similar to his own. He was also young and promising, already a camp commander at such a young age, and it was said he would soon be promoted to regiment commander.
He, on the other hand, had only just reached the rank of deputy camp commander.
The gap between him and Xie Huaizheng was huge.
But why did Su Zhaozhao know Xie Huaizheng?
’Could the Su Family also have a connection to Xie Huaizheng’s family?’
’How is that possible?’
’But if Su Zhaozhao’s grandfather had dealings with my grandfather, it’s not impossible that he also had dealings with Xie Huaizheng’s grandfather...’
’So, is this woman really that fickle?’
’Does she just fall for one person after another?’
’She had clearly promised to marry me before, but the moment my family ran into trouble, she immediately broke off the engagement.’
’And not long after breaking it off, she’s already found another man to be with?’
She hadn’t even recognized him.
In his mind, one moment he saw Su Zhaozhao in the school conference room, speaking with glowing confidence and eloquence.
The next, he saw her sweet smile as she clung to Xie Huaizheng’s arm, her eyes curved like crescent moons.
And then another of her, cold and distant, who had her stepmother break off their engagement and made his own mother so angry she fell gravely ill.
Several emotions warred in Xie Huaizhen’s heart.
He couldn’t help but take a deep breath to restrain his emotions.
’Su Zhaozhao is so happy now, so what should I do?’
’Should I stop her?’
’Should I tell Xie Huaizheng the truth about what kind of woman Su Zhaozhao is?’
’Tell him she’s a social climber who’s only after his money?’
And yet, from his recent interactions with Su Zhaozhao, the impression she gave him was not what he had previously thought.
When she was rebuking Zhou Chengguo, she was full of righteous indignation.
When she was teaching, she was lively and interesting.
When she was acting cute with Xie Huaizheng, she was adorable and bright.
She wasn’t at all what he had imagined.
’Maybe there was a misunderstanding before?’
Xie Huaizhen let out a long, heavy breath.
’Why?’
He and Su Zhaozhao had nothing to do with each other anymore. She didn’t even recognize him.
Yet he was still unable to let her go.
’When did I become so petty?’
Xie Huaizhen felt extremely agitated.
’Forget it. I’ll just go run a couple more laps on the training grounds and blow off some steam.’
...
Huang Jiqin arrived at the West State Railway Station. Looking at the scenery here, which was completely different from Beijing, she couldn’t help but sigh.
She had come alone. Originally, she had wanted to bring Old Xie with her.
But Xie Huaizheng had disagreed, insisting that she come by herself. He had said he wouldn’t see her otherwise.
Huang Jiqin had no choice but to come by herself.
