Su Zhaozhao would brew them delicious tea.
The tea in Jiang City was excellent, but Su Zhaozhao also had a good supply in her space, which she passed off as something she had brought from West State.
She had all sorts of black, green, and oolong teas, and she had even learned to make milk tea.
Milk tea!
Su Zhaozhao hadn’t had milk tea in a long time since coming to this world, and she had been absolutely craving it.
But her space didn’t have this kind of milk tea; it only contained bottled drinks. There was no freshly brewed version, which Su Zhaozhao had been longing for.
So today, she had pleaded with Li Chunhong to buy some fresh milk on her way back from the morning grocery run.
After lunch, Su Zhaozhao went to the kitchen to experiment. She first steeped the tea leaves, then added some brown sugar and let it simmer into a caramel-like consistency before finally pouring in the milk.
Soon, the milk tea was ready.
The milk was purchased fresh. People would lead cows into the market, and if a customer wanted milk, they would milk the cow right then and there.
Milk couldn’t get any fresher than that. However, it still needed to be boiled for pasteurization before it was safe to drink.
Su Zhaozhao also added rose petals, resulting in a cup of milk tea with a fragrant rose aroma.
She gave a cup each to Li Chunhong and Xu Yingmin.
"Have a taste. I think you’ll find it’s delicious."
The three of them sat together, and Su Zhaozhao brought out some pastries to place on the table.
Li Chunhong took a sip. The sweet, milky flavor was mingled with the aroma of tea, the sweetness of sugar, and the scent of rose.
"This is delicious! I’ve never had anything like it," Li Chunhong said, looking at Su Zhaozhao with astonishment. "Zhaozhao, where did you learn to make this?"
"I learned it back in West State. A lot of people drink it this way over there."
"I’ve heard of it," Xu Yingmin said. "They have a lot of cattle and sheep there. Don’t people drink some kind of butter tea? Or something similar. The method is probably like this."
Su Zhaozhao took a sip. ’The flavor is still a bit weak,’ she thought.
’It doesn’t have the same mouthfeel as the milk tea from the shops.’
’But it’s not bad, either. The main point is to satisfy my craving, and at least it’s fresh and healthy.’
Li Chunhong watched Su Zhaozhao as the girl delicately held the cup and savored its contents.
She was beautiful, possessing a girl’s innocent charm along with a touch of classic elegance.
And Li Chunhong had to admit, even though Zhaozhao had only finished middle school, she had a wonderful disposition.
If you didn’t know her educational background, you might even mistake her for a college student.
’She’s not like other young women,’ Li Chunhong thought.
Then again, anyone who would travel all the way from Jiang City to West State to find and marry her fiancé had to be a person with a strong mind of her own.
Was this strength a product of all the years of torment she’d endured in that home?
At this thought, Li Chunhong’s heart ached for Su Zhaozhao.
Su Zhaozhao, completely oblivious to Li Chunhong’s thoughts, was simply enjoying her milk tea, though with a small regret.
’If only I could add some boba pearls,’ she mused. ’That would make it perfect.’
When Li Chunhong asked Su Zhaozhao why she wasn’t going out to have fun, Zhaozhao explained, "Grandma, Grandpa, I just want to be with you."
Li Chunhong was deeply moved. "Oh, you sweet child. You’ve finally come back, you should go hang out with your sister, or with Jiaxin! Once you go to West State, you won’t find as many fun things to do as there are here."
Li Chunhong believed that young people should be out and about, exploring interesting and fun things.
What was the point of keeping company with old folks like them?
"Not at all, Grandma, Grandpa. I’ve lived in Jiang City for so long, there’s nothing new for me to do. But the time I get to spend with you is so short. In the future, I imagine we won’t have much time together either."
Su Zhaozhao set down her cup and looked at Li Chunhong and Xu Yingmin, who were sitting across from her.
They looked just like her own grandparents, had the same personalities, and even spoke with the same intonation.
’Damn it. I still can’t go back to my own world. I really, truly miss my family.’
’So, being with them is a small comfort for my homesickness.’
Li Chunhong’s heart ached a little when she heard Su Zhaozhao’s words.
She took Su Zhaozhao’s hand and patted it gently. "Oh, Zhaozhao, you married too soon. You’re still so young... sigh. If only we had known, you should have come straight to us. If we knew your father and stepmother were mistreating you like that, we would have helped you cut ties with them long ago. Then you wouldn’t have had to run all the way to West State to rely on your fiancé."
A pang of regret struck Li Chunhong as she thought about it.
To think that Su Zhaozhao had been willing to travel a thousand miles to find a fiancé she barely knew, trading marriage for a life free from harm.
Why would she rather do that than come to them, who were so much closer?
Su Zhaozhao couldn’t help but smile at Li Chunhong’s words. "I just thought it was a very difficult situation back then, and I was afraid of dragging you into it. You have no idea how crazy my stepmother is. She seized the entire inheritance my mother left me. I knew she was planning to sell it off secretly. If she found out I was in contact with you, and discovered how wealthy your family is, she would never have let me go."
"Besides, I know my mother and I were... cruel to you in the past. My conscience wouldn’t let me come asking for help only when I was in trouble."
Of course, this was just a story Su Zhaozhao had concocted. In reality, she didn’t even know the original character’s maternal family; they weren’t even mentioned in the novel.
’How was I supposed to find them?’
’Since I transmigrated, of course I had to follow the novel’s plot. The most important thing was to take the shortcut!’
’That meant clinging tightly to the male lead’s leg. That way, I could avoid the original character’s tragic fate.’
But she never expected that she would have to get on good terms with the Xu Family just to transfer her household registration.
But later, after gaining the original character’s memories, she discovered that their grandparents looked identical to her own. That made her much more willing to meet them.
"Zhaozhao, don’t think that way anymore," Li Chunhong said, patting Su Zhaozhao’s hand.
"That’s right. We’re your grandparents. If we can’t even protect our own granddaughter, what good are we?" Xu Yingmin couldn’t help but add.
Su Zhaozhao smiled. "Yes. I was very worried before, but now that I’ve met you, I’m not worried anymore. You’re both so good to me."
Just then, a knock sounded at the door. "I’ll get it," Su Zhaozhao said.
’Could Xu Jiaxin and Xu Ziyang be back already?’
’But it’s still just the afternoon. It’s too early, isn’t it?’
’Maybe my uncle or aunt came to see them?’
Su Zhaozhao opened the door, only to be met with the sight of Xu Jiaming’s pale, surly face.
