Help! I Do Not Want to Guide a Disaster
Chapter 150: The Dome Is Coming Down (1)Yanjing City had devolved into chaos.
A massive Rift cut across the sky like a jagged, bleeding wound, vomiting out waves of mutated monsters. Crawlers slithered through the debris, armored Craxisis trampled the asphalt, and flying Dovos swarmed the air, all of them diving straight for the kill.
Buildings were shattered into concrete dust. The air was a deafening wall of screams, sirens, and collapses as the city faced utter destruction.
On a tearing street, a massive Craxisis was rapidly gaining on a speeding cargo truck. Inside, a terrified woman slammed her foot against the accelerator, trying to pull away with a handful of crying children huddled in the back. She drove as fast as the engine would allow, but it wasn’t enough. The single Craxisis suddenly became four, their massive, jagged horns lowering as they prepared to ram the vehicle.
The exact second before impact, a massive, solid wall of dense glacial ice rose from the ground. The truck cleared the boundary safely just as the horde rammed headfirst into the barrier.
The impact spiderwebbed the ice, but it held. Before the monsters could recoil, the ice wall twisted and rushed upward, shaping into massive spears that impaled the beasts entirely.
Yuzhen materialized instantly in his full ice form, a haze of freezing, ice-blue mist swirling around his silhouette. His gorgeous, glowing blue eyes locked onto the next wave of targets as he glided forward to clear the path.
All around him, the Sovereign and remaining Bureau Espers moved in perfect coordination. The lower-ranking Espers focused entirely on securing and evacuating the trapped civilians, while the elite espers handled the heavy mutated monsters.
Chenxi was a blur of motion, his flames incinerating whole blocks of Crawlers, while Xinyuan had gone straight into the sky. With massive wings made of pure, suffocating dark mist, the disaster class Esper single-handedly shredded the swarms of mutated Dovos before they could dive-bomb the ground.
A few blocks away, tucked inside a fortified command area surrounded by mounted computers and glowing tactical scanners, a team of Sovereign scientists was frantically tracking the Rift’s energy signatures.
"The Red Zone rift has officially arrived in sector one." one of the lead tech-officers announced, his voice trembling as he read the data. "At this rate, all the top sectors will be completely swallowed in less than three days."
Wenzhi turned his head, casting a sharp look at Doctor Ruixin. The doctor looked at the monitors and let out a heavy, tired sigh.
"Yes, the whole of sector one is going to be covered completely, boss," she admitted, her fingers flying across her tablet.
Wenzhi sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose to ward off a headache. "Is the corruption filter dome over the underground city fully operational and ready to be deployed?"
"Yes, it is," Doctor Ruixin confirmed with a firm nod. "The core is fully charged."
Wenzhi shifted his gaze to Elder Yao, who was standing a few paces back. The elderly man had a deeply uneasy expression plastered across his face, his eyes constantly darting to the area as if he expected a mutated beast to burst through their monitors at any second, it was a very real possibility given their proximity to the battle.
"What about the civilians from the border shelters?" Wenzhi demanded. "Are they safe?"
Elder Yao blinked rapidly, startled out of his panic. He quickly cleared his throat and adjusted his collar, looking directly at Wenzhi. "Yes, yes, faction leader Lin. The populations from the border shelters have been relocated into their designated homes and supplied with emergency resources over the past few weeks."
"Well then, let’s hope the civilians of Yanjing are fast, because the dome is coming down today," Wenzhi said grimly. In the distance, the horrific symphony of growls, screeches, and human screams echoed over the burning skyline.
"Wenzhi." Doctor Ruixin stepped up right beside him, her voice dropping to a sharp whisper. "I have your results."
He turned to look at her as she handed over the tablet. Wenzhi stared down at the glowing screen, his grey eyes widening in genuine disbelief.
SSS rank.
"What the..." He narrowed his eyes, leaning closer to the screen to read it again before glancing back up at Doctor Ruixin. She offered him a smile caught perfectly between an apology and excitement.
"How is this... I mean, I know how, but it still should be completely impossible," Wenzhi muttered.
Doctor Ruixin let out a breathless laugh. "Trust me, I almost fainted when the system finalized the analysis. But are you feeling alright? Any physical side effects? Anything we need to be worried about?"
"No, not really. I don’t feel any different," Wenzhi whispered, his gaze darting around the command tent before locking back onto her. "I want to keep this strictly between us. It’s best if no one else knows. No one."
She gave him an understanding nod. "Got it, boss."
Wenzhi let out a long, heavy breath. This entire situation with the Red Zone expansion was so clear, and his own sudden evolution only complicated the board.
Stepping away from the main hub of scientists, he pulled out his secure comm-phone and dialed a direct line to Elder Suisui.
He looked back out toward the chaos. Thick plumes of black smoke choked the horizon, Dovos swarmed the rift, and right in the center of the storm, Wenzhi could spot the unmistakable silhouette of Xinyuan, using his dark mist wings to physically decapitate the mutated monsters in mid-air.
Elder Suisui picked up on the very first ring. "Faction Leader Lin."
"I need to meet the Leader of the Eclipse Faction," Wenzhi requested politely. "Can you set up a private meeting for us?"
"I absolutely can!" Her voice pitched up, dripping with excitement. "Does this mean you’ve given the proposal some thought?"
"There is a live Red Zone Rift actively tearing Yanjing apart as we speak, Elder. Just set up the meeting,"
"I will do it immediately," she promised.
Wenzhi lowered the phone just in time to watch a massive Dovos slam bodily into Xinyuan, dragging the Esper straight into the Rift. Wenzhi’s face went completely flat. He hung up the call, staring at the sky.
"Idiot," he muttered under his breath. "Do not enter the fucking Rift."
It was almost as if Xinyuan heard the mental reprimand through their bond. A second later, Xinyuan burst backward out of the Rift, immediately diving down toward the lower streets to stabilize his flight.
Wenzhi smirked.
But the amusement vanished instantly. A massive wave of pressure crashed over Wenzhi’s senses. They were terrifyingly similar to Xinyuan’s.
"Disaster-class Espers." He spun around, marching directly back to the researchers who were still monitoring the data. "It’s time to move. Pack it up right now. This entire area isn’t safe anymore."
Knowing better than to argue with their boss, the scientists didn’t say a word. They immediately began tearing down their mounted computers, ripping out scanners, and packing their tech tools into the back of the armored transport trucks to evacuate the city area.
