When Xinyuan returned to his senses, he found himself standing at the center of a storm of his own making.
Dark mist roared around him. The earth beneath his feet had been completely shattered, with jagged fissures stretching endlessly in every direction.
His crimson eyes slowly lifted. He was no longer inside the underground laboratory.
Above him hung a massive rift that tore across the heavens. It stretched wider and wider, exposing an endless abyss of darkness that looked eerily similar to his own mindscape.
The rift wasn’t simply open. It was waiting... waiting to devour the world.
Xinyuan’s expression remained frighteningly calm. His sharpened senses picked up the distant hum of engines of airships and jets circling far away, refusing to approach.
He let out a slow breath as relief settled quietly inside him. Wenzhi was alive. Their bond had returned, and that unbearable emptiness was finally gone.
But... his gaze drifted back toward the enormous rift hanging over the world. It continued widening, its endless darkness pulsing as though inviting everything into oblivion.
Xinyuan lowered his eyes to his own hands. "...So this is my strength."
The words barely escaped as a whisper.
The storm surrounding him immediately began to weaken. The black hurricanes dissolved, the violent winds slowly died down, and the floating mountains of shattered earth gently descended back to the ground. Even the grey sky began clearing, revealing patches of approaching dawn hidden behind the storm.
Yet Xinyuan himself remained suspended before the enormous rift, dark mist pouring endlessly from his body.
He knew if he stayed like this much longer, he would inevitably lose himself again.
Still, he didn’t move.
He wanted them to see... every single one of them. He wanted them to understand exactly what they had nearly created. He wanted them to remember this fear forever so that no one would ever again repeat what the old blood and CEA had done.
The manipulation, lies, threats, control... When they could have simply had a proper conversation.
They could have found another solution; they could have worked together against the true enemy which was the rifts and the monsters.
Instead, they chose to hurt him.
As the storm weakened, the surrounding fleets immediately advanced. Airships and military jets rushed toward the area, surrounding the massive rift from every direction.
The people within. The foreign organizations, independent factions, mercenaries all gathered, staring in stunned silence on the impossible sight hanging above the earth.
"What... is that rift?"
"Our instruments are detecting corruption levels we’ve never recorded before!"
"The atmosphere won’t survive if that thing fully opens!"
"...Shao Xinyuan," someone’s voice trembled over the communication channel. "He’s really going to destroy the world. There isn’t anywhere left to run."
Xinyuan sighed.
Even he hadn’t understood the full extent of his own abilities. To open a rift capable of swallowing the entire planet.... He really could end everything right now with one decision.
His crimson eyes slowly swept across the jets surrounding him. Then, he thought of Wenzhi.
A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "I already got what I wanted."
He slowly raised one hand.
Immediately, the colossal rift shuddered. Instead of expanding, it began shrinking slowly, steadily. The darkness folded back into itself as if obeying only him.
The horrifying tear across the sky became smaller... smaller... until it disappeared completely.
Blue sky remained, and silence followed.
Xinyuan slowly descended to the broken earth below, landing atop one of the massive slabs of rock that now buried the destroyed underground laboratory. His crimson eyes remained glowing softly as he looked up.
Snow drifted quietly from the sky.
Around him, dozens of jets and airships finally dared to close the distance.
Then, one jet abruptly descended. Its hatch burst open, and three familiar figures jumped out.
"XINYUAN!"
Su Zheng sprinted toward him first, with Pei Luo and Duan Ze not far behind.
Xinyuan simply watched them.
Duan Ze and Pei Luo remained by the jet, looking like they still hadn’t recovered from what they had just witnessed.
Su Zheng, however, was immediately enveloped by her mist. In the blink of an eye, she appeared in front of Xinyuan, unwilling to let the Guides get any closer in case his unstable energy lashed out again.
Her glowing purple eyes searched his face. "You’re alright..." she breathed, relief flooding her features. "You didn’t... you didn’t..."
She let out a long, shaky breath before lowering her head. "I’m sorry I couldn’t help you back at Yanjing. I..."
Xinyuan looked at her quietly. "He’s alive."
Su Zheng blinked. "...What?" She frowned in confusion. "But Pei Luo and Duan Ze said they found blood in the..."
"He’s alive," Xinyuan repeated and this time, there wasn’t the slightest doubt in his voice.
Su Zheng froze before slowly closing her eyes. "...That’s a relief." She pressed a hand against her forehead, looking seconds away from collapsing.
Xinyuan looked past her. More jets and airships were still circling overhead. Without another word, he took a step forward.
"Xinyuan..." Su Zheng called after him.
"I’m fine," he answered.
"No, you’re not. You’re on the verge of entering a..."
"Jiang Zhaohe." His voice cut cleanly through hers and tilted his head slightly. "I need to find her."
Su Zheng swallowed. "...Right."
By then, the surrounding airships had begun landing. Their hatches opened one after another as Espers, Guides, scientists, and faction leaders cautiously stepped out. Everyone wanted answers, yet no one dared approach. The fear was obvious.
Xinyuan’s eyes briefly met those of a middle-aged man dressed in an immaculate black suit. A faction leader. The man immediately looked away.
Xinyuan sighed. "I’m retiring after this."
Su Zheng blinked before laughing weakly. "Me too."
He gave her a strange look. Su Zheng really was odd. Sometimes... She reminded him of Jiang Zhaohe. Before.... before she revealed where her loyalties truly lay.
"I’m... really glad you didn’t destroy the world." A nervous smile tugged at her lips. "And..."
Her expression softened. "I’m sorry you had to go through all of that."
Xinyuan was quiet. After a moment, he replied, "I’m sorry you had to go through everything you did, too. You had to kill your own family as well."
Su Zheng’s smile became strained. "...Yeah." She looked toward the ruined landscape. "It will hurt, you know."
Then, she glanced back at him. "I know your father was never really there for you. But Bai Qinian..." She hesitated. "In her own twisted way... she was the closest thing you had to a mother."
Xinyuan thought about it, then slowly shook his head. "No. It won’t hurt." His voice carried no hesitation, no regret, only emptiness. "It was... disgusting."
He looked up at the sky, snow flakes landing on his hair. "I was being used. Preserved. Broken apart piece by piece. Manipulated." His gaze lowered. "That’s why I couldn’t kill her in the beginning." After a brief pause, he added, "But now that I have... I feel liberated."
Su Zheng smiled softly. "I’m glad."
Xinyuan gave a small nod. "Yeah..."
The black mist rushed around him once more, swallowing his figure completely. A second later, he vanished.
Su Zheng stood there for several moments before letting out a slow breath. Then, she turned toward the dozens of representatives gathered nearby. Everyone was staring at her now with distinct expressions on their faces.
She disappeared into her mist before reappearing directly before the crowd. Her expression was calm and professional.
"I, Su Zheng, I am hereby making an official announcement on behalf of the Sovereign." Her voice carried effortlessly across the battlefield. "No one will harm a member of the Sovereign Faction and survive."
She looked around the gathered factions. "For years, many of you believed it was merely propaganda that Shao Xinyuan possessed the power to destroy the world. You’ve all seen what happened today. I sincerely hope someone recorded it, because the entire world needs to know."
Her eyes hardened. "If anyone ever attempts to repeat what the CEA and the Old Blood did, they will meet a fate far worse."
Silence greeted her words.
"Thank you very much."
Without another glance, she turned away.
Duan Ze was already smiling as he climbed back into the jet. Pei Luo smirked, extending an elegant hand toward her. She accepted it without complaint, and together, they boarded.
The hatch sealed shut. Moments later, the jet lifted into the sky, disappearing quickly.
