Alana, her face flushed from crying, retorted, “What am I? I’m Grandma’s granddaughter...isn’t that enough to give me the right?”
“You promised so earnestly back then that you’d take good care of Grandma. To ensure you did, I even sent you a portion of my monthly salary as a little extra. Now that something’s happened to Grandma, not only do you show no remorse or self-reproach, but you’re shifting the blame. Is this how elders are supposed to behave?”
Miranda laughed in exasperation and pointed at Alana, scolding her, “Oh, so now you’re blaming us for not taking good care of her? If you’d taken good care of her, why did you leave in the first place? You should have just stayed and looked after your grandmother!”
“It’s not like we didn’t try to get you to stay and take care of her, you were the one who insisted on leaving. Now that something’s happened to her, you’re blaming us. Why don’t you blame yourself?”
“Blame yourself for being so heartless back then and not staying to keep caring for the old lady! If you’d listened to us back then, quit your job, stayed to take care of your precious grandmother, and maybe even gone on a blind date with a man from a good family...wouldn’t it have been better to get married and have kids here?!”
“At the end of the day, you’re nothing but an ungrateful wretch. At the critical moment when your grandmother needed you, you ran off for the sake of your job. So what makes you any different from us?!”
“Don’t pretend to be the good guy...you’re just as selfish as the rest of us!”
Alana trembled all over. Her lips moved as if she wanted to say something, but she lacked the strength to argue back.
Miranda pressed on, “Got nothing to say, do you? Did I hit a nerve?”
“Look at you...you’re just like your mother: heartless, ungrateful, cold, and selfish! You graduated from college. You could have easily stayed home and found a job, but you insisted on going all the way to town. It’s obvious you just wanted to cut ties with us. Calling you an ungrateful wretch wouldn’t be an exaggeration!”
The other relatives all agreed with Miranda’s words and began pointing fingers at Alana.
The implication was clear: she shouldn’t have left; she should have stayed put, taken care of her grandmother, and seen her through to the end.
Seeing these relatives with their aggressive, accusatory expressions, it was as if Alana alone was to blame for what had happened to her grandmother.
It was as if she were some heinous, unforgivable villain.
Alana was forced to back away repeatedly. Her legs gave way, and she nearly collapsed to the ground.
But a strong arm wrapped around her slender waist just in time. He held her tightly against his chest.
Alana lifted her tear-filled, blurred eyes and dimly made out the man’s handsome, chiseled features.
Her panicked and helpless heart instantly found a place to rest.
Seeing Alana in such a heartbroken state, Stephan felt a pang of pity.
He raised his gaze, his icy stare sweeping over Miranda and the others.
“You call her an ungrateful wretch, but what about you? Alana isn’t a direct relative. Logically speaking, she has no responsibility or obligation to care for her grandmother.”
“On the other hand, you are her grandmother’s direct relatives. Not only have you failed to take proper care of her and neglected your duties and responsibilities, but you’re also shifting all this onto Alana. Don’t you find that shameless? If we’re talking about ungrateful people, aren’t you the ones who are truly heartless and ungrateful?”
“Did her grandmother raise all of you just to turn out like this? Are you all just animals? No, calling you that would be an insult to animals, you’re worse than beasts!”
Some relatives felt guilty after hearing Stephan’s words. They knew full well that supporting and caring for the elderly was the responsibility and duty of their immediate family members.
But they had simply taken advantage of the fact that Alana had no parents to protect her and was, to them, an outsider...that was why they had deliberately bullied her.
When Miranda saw Stephan step in to protect Alana, she stared in shock, her eyes wide. “You... who are you? This is our own family business. What business is it of yours, an outsider?”
Stephan introduced himself, “I’m Alana’s boyfriend, Stephan.”
Miranda and the group of relatives were instantly stunned.
They never expected that Alana had actually brought a boyfriend back with her this time.
The last time she sent me a photo of her boyfriend, he looked far too handsome to be with her, and they thought she’d just grabbed a random picture off the internet.
Miranda never imagined there really was such a handsome guy in real life.
And the man standing right in front of me was even more handsome than the one in the photo.
Miranda retorted defiantly, “So what if you’re Alana’s boyfriend? Alana doesn’t even have the right to say anything, so you, as an outsider, certainly don’t!”
“Oh?” Stephan’s lips curled into a cold smile. “Alana and I don’t have a right?”
“Do you want me to call a lawyer right now to teach you both a lesson on what the crime of abandonment entails?”
Miranda and the others panicked instantly.
“What do you mean, ‘abandonment’? Don’t talk nonsense! We do take care of the old lady from time to time...we just don’t watch over her every single moment!” The Aunt yelled.
Stephan retorted, “If it’s not abandonment, then why are you asking Alana to take care of your own mother for you?”
The group was speechless, at a loss for words. The man’s logic was too sharp; they were no match for him.
Stephan pulled out his phone and said calmly, “I think I’ll call a lawyer right now to settle this. Let’s have a proper discussion and see if what you’re doing constitutes abandonment.”
The group instantly wilted.
They were the classic bullies, picking on the weak and bullying the vulnerable, believing that might make things right.
“No, no, no! Let’s talk this out!”
“Exactly! We’re all family, why are you making such a big deal out of this?”
Stephan sneered, “Why didn’t you speak to Alana like that just now? Did you think she had no one to protect her?”
Miranda and the others were once again thrown into speechlessness.
Stephan pulled the girl in his arms closer and declared firmly, “From now on, I’ll protect her. As long as I’m here, no one will ever be able to bully her.”
Miranda and the others exchanged glances.
Who would’ve thought that even a sourpuss like Alana would one day have someone to protect her.
They really underestimated her.
Alana couldn’t help but lift her gaze to look at the man standing up for her.
At that moment, he seemed to radiate a dazzling light that enveloped her completely. She was deeply moved. As far as she could remember, no one had ever stood up for her with such unwavering resolve.
Like an impregnable fortress, he stood before her, shielding her from harm. She couldn’t help but clasp his hand tightly, her tears already flowing freely from the overwhelming emotion.
She must have done many good deeds in her past life, which is why she had met a man like Stephan in this one, a man who would protect her so fiercely.
With Stephan’s arrival, the atmosphere grew tense and awkward.
Everyone seemed to have run into a brick wall; no one dared to utter a word.
Stephan looked at this group of suddenly silent quails, his lips curling into an expressionless smile. “Apologize to my girlfriend. If you don’t offer a proper apology for this, I will still pursue this to the end.”
“To make us apologize to a junior? You must be joking...”
Before Miranda could even finish the words, she suddenly met Stephan’s gaze cold as an icy river, and shuddered in fear.
What kind of man was this? His gaze was terrifying, like the King of Hell himself, giving off the feeling that he could take a life at any moment.
Stephan stared at Miranda, his eyes sharp and cold. “Say it again: apologize.”
Miranda asked tremblingly, “Aren’t you Alana’s boyfriend?”
“Acting so lawless in front of us elders...aren’t you afraid we might disapprove of you two being together?”
The others weren’t willing to apologize so easily either.
“Exactly! If you keep acting so arrogant, we won’t let you stay together!”
Stephan sneered, “Do Alana and I need your permission to be together? Who do you think you are? What right do you have to dictate my relationship with Alana?”
Stephan adopted a forceful tone, “You won’t apologize, huh? I’ll call a lawyer and have them say you not only neglected the elderly but also abused them, causing them to end up in the operating room...”
Miranda’s eyes widened. “You... what proof do you have?”
