"Charge!"

While the Capital City was peaceful at night, the Xirong’s siege began.

An army of thirty thousand swept toward Changlu Pass. The cavalry charged with ferocious momentum, shaking the very earth beneath them.

Li Wei, who had made preparations long ago, made no move this time, allowing the Xirong cavalry to charge right up to the city walls.

Although the Xirong general felt something was off, the order to attack had been given. There was no reason to retreat now. Even if they knew a trap lay ahead, they had to carve a path forward with their lives.

The Da Wei soldiers hid behind the crenellations, their hands gripping thin cords. Wooden stakes on the ground marked the kill zone. Everyone held their breath, waiting for the enemy to enter the designated area.

"Pull!"

At the command, everyone pulled their cords.

BOOM!

BOOM!

Thunderous explosions ripped through the sky. One after another, blasts erupted from the ground, tearing the Xirong cavalry, men and horses alike, into a gruesome spray of flesh and blood.

In an instant, the five-thousand-strong vanguard of cavalry was reduced to a field of severed limbs.

The Xirong soldiers were dumbfounded. Even the Da Wei soldiers were stunned. They knew it was a powerful weapon, but they had never imagined it would be *this* devastating.

They had always had gunpowder, but gunpowder packets had to be lit and thrown. Igniting buried gunpowder was also difficult; often, the fuses would go out halfway.

Until now, pots of burning oil had been the most effective weapon.

But these new things could be buried in the ground and detonated with just the pull of a cord, without anyone needing to even stick their head out.

Most importantly, the power was immense. A vanguard of five thousand Xirong cavalry had been annihilated with effortless ease.

A moment later, sky-shaking cheers erupted throughout Changlu Pass.

"Mighty is Da Wei! Mighty is Your Majesty!"

In stark contrast to the joyful excitement of the Da Wei soldiers, a terrifying silence fell over the Xirong side.

"Eldest Prince, do we still attack?"

Even the West Rong people, who were known for their savagery and skill in battle, were terrified by the scene.

Five thousand men, turned into a field of severed limbs in the blink of an eye. They weren’t afraid to die, but they wouldn’t throw their lives away for nothing.

So many had died without even seeing the enemy’s face. How were they supposed to fight a war like this?

While Prince Xi Rong was still hesitating, a scout rushed over. "Report! Li Wei has led a team on a surprise raid of the royal tent! General Tom tried to stop him but has been slain! He may have already reached the King!"

The King of Xirong was in a military camp fifty li away. He had sent the Eldest Prince to lead the attack while he rested, preparing for a war of attrition. The plan was to wear down the forces at Changlu Pass. Then, once they were exhausted, they would launch a sudden, full-scale assault at dawn, when their guard was at its lowest, and retake Changlu Pass.

But now, the entire plan was in chaos.

Prince Xi Rong was incredulous. ’How did he slip past right under my nose?’

His first thought was that his father would surely curse him out if he found out.

’Li Wei isn’t at Changlu Pass,’ he reasoned. ’This is the best time to attack. If I just take Changlu Pass, I can atone for my mistakes with a great victory, and Royal Father will certainly not blame me.’

But now he didn’t dare advance a single step. If all his soldiers were to be lost here while he failed to take Changlu Pass, the crime would be immense.

He glanced back in the direction of the royal tent, thinking of his third and fourth brothers, who were still by his father’s side.

’If something happens to Father...’

He gritted his teeth and waved his arm. "Retreat! Back to protect the King!"

At the King of Xirong’s main camp, Li Wei and his three thousand men cut through the defenses like an unstoppable arrow.

Each man carried dozens of grenades, blasting a path as they charged.

They literally blew a hole through the camp, clearing a path for Li Wei straight to the King of Xirong’s royal tent.

The soldiers at the entrance tried to mount a defense, but a dark object was thrown over their heads and into the tent.

Coincidentally, the King of Xirong had heard the commotion and had just gotten up from his beautiful concubine. He had just finished dressing and was about to step out.

The grenade landed in front of him. He looked down, and before he could even get a clear look, it exploded with a deafening BOOM.

Li Wei cut down several soldiers who tried to attack him. In a brief opening, he pulled out a grenade, tore the pin with his teeth, and tossed it into the royal tent.

His martial arts were superb, and he fought with increasing ferocity, slaughtering every Xirong soldier nearby and carving out an empty zone around himself.

When he got a moment to push aside the flaming tatters of the royal tent and search for the King of Xirong, he found only two arms on the ground.

He finally found the King of Xirong’s head in a corner.

It was a mangled mess of flesh and blood, the facial features completely gone.

’Is this the King of Xirong?’

’It should be, right?’

In the end, Li Wei identified him by the distinctive golden ring in his ear.

"The King of Xirong is dead! Retreat!"

Li Wei fought his way out of the Xirong main camp with the King of Xirong’s head, the sound of explosions echoing behind him.

When the Xirong soldiers saw Li Wei charging out with the head of their king, they pursued him in a frenzy, only to run right into a trap he had prepared.

BOOM!

The canyon walls on both sides were blown apart, and countless boulders rained down, burying the men alive.

This also blocked the path for any further pursuers.

Li Wei had brought a total of four thousand men. One thousand were left behind as support, while three thousand charged in with him.

With the element of surprise and the powerfully destructive grenades, they had caught the West Rong people completely off guard.

They suffered fewer than three hundred casualties, yet they had made the Xirong pay a terrible price, even taking the head of the King of Xirong.

Death was normal on the battlefield. A victory of the few against the many was a pure profit. At this moment, they cheered only for their triumph!

"Mighty is the General!"

"The King of Xirong is dead! Let’s see them act so arrogant now!"

"These grenades are just too damn useful..."

By the time Prince Xi Rong led his troops back, a full hour had passed. The people of the Royal Court were still trying to restore order. Bodies were laid out in rows on the grass. The grounds of the Royal Court had been blasted into a field of rubble, the casualties devastatingly high and plain to see.

A soldier rushed up to report that his Royal Father was dead, his body blown to pieces, his head taken by Li Wei.

His third brother had been killed in the chaos, and his fourth brother’s ears had been injured in a blast. He was now the only one left to take charge of the situation.

Huyan Mu looked at the King of Xirong’s mangled remains and was forced to accept the cruel reality. With immense "sorrow," he was surrounded and hailed as the new King of Xirong.

The King of Xirong’s head was brought back to Changlu Pass by Li Wei and hung above the city gate.

The battle left the soldiers in a daze. ’We won? Just like that?’

In every battle before, hadn’t they been forced to open the gates, to fight tooth and nail in a river of blood, to struggle for a hard-won victory?

But now they had won so easily, and had even terrified the powerful and ferocious West Rong people into submission.

Though it was late into the night, no one felt the slightest bit sleepy. They were all discussing the power of the landmines and grenades.

Those who had used them were buzzing with excitement; those who hadn’t were green with envy.

As the passionate discussion reached its peak, Li Wei raised a wine jar, took a long swig, then grabbed his greatsword, stood up, and roared:

"Brothers! The Fire Thunder His Majesty sent is almost gone! From now on, we rely on our own true strength!"

"The King of Xirong may be dead, but we have not yet avenged General Fang! The blood shed at Bafang City has not yet dried! The tide has turned in our favor! Sharpen your blades, fill your bellies, and tomorrow, you will ride with me to claim our vengeance!"
