High School DxD: Fox of Ill Omen

Chapter 173 — Indecision and The Studio

Akeno

I was distracted.

I had been since last night, and today at school too.

After Rias made her announcement, when we joined everyone else in Asia-chan’s room, the night ended without anything else interesting happening.

They finished their game.

We all chatted and had fun.

And then everyone called it a night and went to bed.

But I didn’t get to tease Yuki-chan like I had wanted to.

I had gotten to fluster Ise-kun and have my fun teasing him until Rias and I had started our own competition with the costumes and gotten carried away.

When I went to try and tease Yuki-chan and start to try to get a reaction out of her, she and the rest of the girls had already left.

It had spoiled the good mood I had been in immediately.

I had missed a wonderful opportunity to try and get one of those wonderful reactions out of her while she and I were wearing erotic outfits.

I was happy that I had gotten to tease Ise-kun and flirt with him, but missing out on the same thing with Yuki-chan bothered me.

So I had found a cheerleader costume and decided that I would still be able to tease and flirt with her, but the night ended too quickly for me to get a real chance.

Sure, I had pressed myself against her, and she had glanced at my body in that outfit, but that was it.

And then when everyone was leaving Asia-chan’s room, Yuki-chan casually asked Koneko-chan if she’d be sleeping in her room again that night.

That had gotten my attention and a series of questions from everyone in the room.

The two of them were asked when it had started and why Koneko-chan was sleeping in Yuki-chan’s room.

Xenovia asked if that meant they were practicing making babies, but was only met with an exasperated look from Yuki-chan.

Koneko-chan had explained that she had asked Yuki-chan to sleep in her room the day after Irina-chan had transferred to Kuoh Academy, and that she slept in Yuki-chan's room most nights.

As for why, she shrugged and said she liked being around Yuki-chan and that she was comfortable, especially with her tails.

Irina had tilted her head and commented that the two of them just had sleepovers a lot.

Asia had gotten excited and said that a sleepover with all of the girls would be a fun idea to do.

The curiosity over their sleeping arrangements faded, and everyone began to leave.

As Yuki-chan and Koneko-Chan walked through the door to Yuki-chan’s room, Koneko-chan looked at me and gave me a smug smirk before shutting and locking the door.

I had stared at her door for a minute alone in that hall before heading up to my room.

It had made me realize that while I felt like I had been making progress with Ise-kun, I didn’t feel the same with Yuki-chan.

Sure, I had some intimate moments with her when I had pushed the right button to get her to react, but that was pretty much it.

We had a few quiet moments and heartfelt conversations together, but they felt more like something a friend would do, at least from her end.

She hadn’t shown any real interest in me, or anyone else for that matter.

She had told us that before, but now I was feeling like it was true.

I knew she was physically attracted to me, but besides that and some normal reactions to flirting, she didn’t look at me any differently.

She didn’t look at me like Ise-kun did, or like how Koneko-chan looked at her.

And it was selfish of me, but I was interested in both her and Ise-kun.

I had flirted and teased them both, and originally it was just me playing around, but it wasn’t quite that anymore.

Ise-kun had gotten my attention after he saved Rias from her wedding with Riser.

Then, when he accepted me when I told him about my Fallen Angel heritage, I knew I had the beginning of feelings for him.

With him, it was simple and easy.

He was brave, kind, and sincere.

He was a massive pervert and a bit of a fool, but I didn’t mind.

It made him more fun to tease.

Yuki-chan had started very differently with me.

At first, she had been someone that I was curious about, with her overly formal nature and the way she had only looked at Rias as a master to serve.

Then she had started to show more of her real self to us, and I wanted to know more about the girl behind the mask she had hidden behind.

I had found that I wanted to hear her dry, sarcastic comments, see her poke fun at Ise-kun, and tear apart the people who had hurt her.

Then the incident at the pool happened, and I was interested in her reaction.

I had mentioned my heritage to her in a roundabout way, and she too didn’t care or reject me.

I told her why I hated Barakiel, and she encouraged me to accept my Fallen Angel half rather than push it away.

And right after, she watched me use my powers when Isse-kun couldn’t.

She supported me as I began to accept my power and was there for me when I finally used it in front of the underworld.

That’s when she stopped being an interesting and fun kohai to tease, and I realized I had the same feelings for her growing in me that I had gotten for Ise-kun.

But I didn’t know what I wanted.

If I was forced to choose right now, I wouldn’t be able to make a decision.

I stared out of the classroom window as I thought.

Rias’s voice pulled my attention back to the present as I turned to look at her.

She was standing next to my desk with her bag.

Most of the other students were packing up and leaving the classroom.

“I’m sorry, Buchou. I didn’t hear you,” I said to Rias as I fixed my smile.

She raised a brow at me.

“I asked if you were ready to go. Classes are over for the day, and we have our interview later that we have to get to. Is everything alright?”

“Of course, Buchou. I was just lost in thought for a moment. That’s all.”

“You had a pretty serious face. What were you thinking about?”

I grinned at her.

“Fufufu. I was imagining the reward I’d give Ise-kun for saying that he preferred my costume over yours.”

Rias rolled her eyes at me.

“Fine, don’t tell me,” she said, rolling her eyes. “But seriously, is everything alright, Akeno?”

I nodded.

“I really was just thinking, Rias. Now. Let’s head to the club room,” I said as I stood and grabbed my bag.

We began to make our way over to the old school building.

I continued to think about how I felt and what I should do.

We arrived in the club room and were greeted by the rest of the peerage.

I decided that for now, I would continue growing closer to both of them, and then make my decision later.

I had time before I would need to choose between them.

They both weren’t ready to return those feelings yet anyways.

I just hoped that when the time came, I knew who to choose.

Yuki

We gathered in the club room after school before we went to our interview.

There was a magic circle prepared to transport us to the Underworld.

It made me wish wedidn't haved to spend hours on a train to arrive as we did before.

We were returning to the Underworld after only being back for a few weeks, but this time everyone seemed excited or nervous in a normal way.

I wasn’t sure that appearing on television was the best idea for me, but our first rating game had already been recorded and viewed by people in the Underworld.

And Serafall’s film would come out eventually too.

So it wouldn’t really change much by appearing on television.

My poor reputation among Devils was only really known by a few high-class Devils.

I was only worried that someone might use my past as a way to try and damage Rias’s reputation.

I didn’t mind what my public perception was.

The people in my peerage were the only ones whose opinions I cared for.

“Is everyone ready?” Rias asked, and after receiving a chorus of yeses, she nodded and activated the magic circle.

When we arrived on the other side, we were in a large underground room.

There were multiple teleportation magic circles in the room.

Rias had said we would be teleported directly to the building the interview would be in, so this must have been where everyone who teleported to and from the building came to.

There were some Devils waiting for us with smiles.

One of them approached our group.

“We are so glad you’ve arrived. It’s wonderful to meet you, Rias Gremory-sama. It’s a pleasure to meet all of you too, Gremory servant-samas. I will guide you to the set. Please come with me.”

We followed him and entered an elevator that was large enough to fit all of us.

He pressed the button for the top floor, and the elevator began to rise.

We quickly reached our floor and exited into a modern-looking hall.

Our guide began to lead us through the halls.

The building itself looked like something that would be found in the human world.

Most of the modern buildings in the Underworld were like that.

The trend was to make buildings similar to those in the human world, and to add technology that ran on demonic power where needed.

I noticed Issei staring at something as we walked.

I followed his gaze and saw a poster of Rias next to a poster of Serafall-sama and another of some Devil woman I didn’t know.

It looked like an advertisement for makeup or clothing.

As the heiress to a major noble house and a beautiful girl, she was very popular in the underworld.

The young Devil Rating Games were likely only increasing her fame.

I looked down the hall as we passed the poster and saw another group approaching ours.

“Hello, Sairaorg,” Rias greeted him warmly. “It makes sense that you would be here too.

Sairaorg-san’s peerage observed us as we looked at them.

The blond woman with a ponytail beside him was his [Queen].

There was one other woman in his group.

She was tall, voluptuous, and had long blond hair, and I recognized her as one of his [Bishops]

The other [Bishop] was a boy with green hair and ornate robes.

The two [Rooks] were easy to identify based on their size.

Both were large men, but they looked rather different.

One was tall and skinny, almost gaunt, with a thin frame.

The other was very tall and looked muscular while also having tanned skin.

The two [Knights] were both handsome young men.

One had long blonde hair, and the other had short brown hair.

The last member was Sairaorg’s [Pawn].

He was an average-height man with orange hair wearing a mask.

There were no other discernible features of his that I could see

“Rias. Are you here to get interviewed as well?” Sairaorg-san asked.

Rias nodded

“Yes, we are heading to the dressing room now. Have you already finished yours?”

“No, we are about to go onto the set now,” Sairaorg-san replied.

Then he looked at Issei.

Issei straightened his posture under his gaze.

“I saw how your match went. It doesn’t matter how strong you are if you fall into a trap and can’t display your power. As the Sekiryuutei, your opponents will always be looking for an opening they can exploit. I also saw that strange ability you created with your Sacred Gear. Sacred Gears truly are a major unknown in any fight,” he looked back at Rias. “I learned many things from your game against Sona Sitri.”

He stepped closer and put a hand on Issei’s shoulder.

“However, I wish to fight you with pure power only.”

Sairaorg stepped back and looked to Rias.

He nodded at her, and then he and his peerage left.

I watched them go.

It seemed that Sairaorg was another person who wanted to overcome the Sekiryuutei.

However, if he ignored the rest of us, then we would be able to punish him for it.

We continued following our guide after that and were taken to the film studio.

There was a stage with a desk, multiple chairs, and a couch for guests near it.

The staff was still setting things up as they moved lights and adjusted cameras and microphones.

There were also seats for an audience to watch the interview live.

A woman in a neat-looking suit and glasses came over to speak to Rias.

“Hello there! It’s my first time meeting you, Rias Gremory-sama. My name is Karin. I am the host of the show for Underworld Broadcast Studio One.”

“It’s a pleasure, Karina-san,” Rias said with a polite smile as she shook her hand. “I’m sorry to impose, but I had a few questions before the interview started.”

Riss and Karina-san began to discuss the interview and what topics would and wouldn’t be discussed.

I was distracted from their conversation by Gasper-kun.

He was standing close behind me as he trembled in fear.

“T-There are going to b-be s-s-so many people here! I don’t want to be on T.V. It’s too scaryyyyy!”

I turned to him and put my hands on his shoulders.

“You’ll be fine, Gasper-kun. I'm sure that you won’t get asked too many questions. Buchou will make sure of it.”

“I’ll mainly be focusing on the other members of your group today during the interview,” Karina said with a small smile. “You’ll still get a few questions though, so try not to be too nervous.”

“See, you’ll be fine, Gasper. It’ll be over before you know it,” Issei added.

Gasper-kun gave a hesitant nod.

“O-Okay…”

“Good. So I see that Shiramine Yuki and Himejima are here,” Karina-san said, looking at Akeno and me. “We will likely be asking you both a decent amount of questions. Each of your popularities has been growing, so we will focus on the two of you for a bit.”

“Really?” Issei asked in surprise.

Karina-san nodded.

“Himejima-san is quite popular with male fans. She certainly stood out after her lightning attack in your Rating Game against the Sitri heir. Shiramine-san is popular with both male and female fans, similar to Rias Gremory-san. The scene of her transformation ability was quite striking. Plus, both of them are rather beautiful.

I blinked, not expecting to hear that.

I had expected to receive some attention after the match due to being a Kitsune reincarnated Devil, but I hadn’t expected to hear that I was now popular and had fans.

It was odd being viewed favorably by strangers.

Akeno moved over and hooked an arm around mine as she leaned against me.

“Did you hear that, Yuki-chan? It sounds like you and I both have plenty of fans already. It sounds like they have rather good taste.”

I gave her a look.

“I’m not sure being famous is something that I’d enjoy. Hopefully any interest there is in me will pass quickly,” I replied.

“So you must be Hydouou Issei-san, right?” Karina-san asked.

Issei looked confused.

“Yes, that’s me. But why did you need me to confirm it? I'm pretty recognizable as the Sekiryuutei…”

“I’m sorry. It’s just that most people associate you with your armor, so I didn’t quite recognize you,” Karina-san said awkwardly.

Koneko let out an amused huff.

“I get that I wore my armor for most of the match, but do people really not recognize my face?” Issei complained lamely.

“Well, after the interview, people will recognize you, Ise-san,” Asia said, trying to cheer him up.

“In addition to the interview, Hyoudou-san will be needed in another studio as well. You’re quite famous as the Chichiryuutei,” Karina-san said.

“Chichiryuutei?!” Issei asked.

“…What is that?” Rias asked with apprehension.

“You see, Hyoudou-san has become rather popular among children in the Underworld. He is being called ‘Oppai Dragon’ by them, so the name ‘Chichiryuutei’ also started being used. When you shouted out ‘Oppai’ in the match against the Sitri heiress, the children of the Underworld saw and it quickly became popular among them for some reason.”

Issei looked stunned to hear that he was known as the Oppai Dragon by the children of the Underworld.

Koneko gave him a disappointed look.

Akeno covered her mouth to hide her laughter.

Asia was rubbing his arm while trying to comfort him.

And Rias put a hand over her face and shook her head.

I didn’t know what to think.

The whole thing was so ridiculous that I was half expecting Karina-san to tell me she was kidding.

Issei had a conflicted look on his face.

He was likely talking to Ddraig in his head.

I could only imagine a prideful being like a Dragon wouldn’t be happy to be referred to as the Boob Dragon rather than the Red Dragon Emperor.

Karina-san called over one of the staff members.

“Now, Hyoudou-san, please follow this gentleman to the other set for now," she said, gesturing to the staff member. “The rest of you can head back to your dressing room, where you can wait until we are ready for you. There will be snacks and refreshments already waiting for you.”

Issei was led away, and we were guided back to our dressing room.

I sat on one of the couches and waited for Koneko to come sit with me after she finished loading up a plate with snacks.

Akeno turned to Rias with a grin.

“So, Buchou, how does it feel to hear your precious servant's new title? Rias Gremory, heiress to the Gremory family, Crimson-Haired Princess of Destruction, Master of the Oppai Dragon.”

Rias turned red and buried her face in her hands.

“Shut up…”

I chuckled to myself as I watched.

Koneko came over, and I wrapped an arm around her as she sat in my lap.

I wondered to myself what Issei’s separate filming was for, but whatever it was, we would still have to do our interview when he returned.

And apparently I would be getting a larger number of questions than I had anticipated.

Hopefully things will go smoothly.
