Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition
Chapter 2531: Story 2532: The Gate Before TimeA silence deeper than death settled over Blackstone Ridge.
No sword was raised.
No rifle fired.
Even the endless wind seemed to vanish as the colossal black gate continued rising from the shattered mountain. Ancient symbols glowed across its surface, shifting like living shadows. They belonged to no language remembered by humanity.
Victoria Kane tightened her grip on the Dawnblade.
The Crown of the Black Star pulsed gently, as though recognizing something far older than itself.
"What is that?" she whispered.
Beside her, Gideon Black slowly removed his helmet.
His weathered face had turned pale.
"I’ve guarded this fortress for one hundred and twenty-seven years..."
"...and I never knew this gate existed."
Dr. Evelyn Brooks quickly opened Elias Crow’s journals.
Her hands trembled as she turned the fragile pages.
"There has to be something..."
Suddenly she stopped.
Hidden between two worn pages was a faded sketch of an enormous doorway marked with the same strange symbols.
Beneath it, Elias had written only four words.
The First Prison Sleeps Below.
Father Gabriel looked toward the rising gate.
"The First Prison?"
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"I think Roland was telling the truth."
"The Hollow King wasn’t the beginning."
A deep rumble interrupted her.
The black gate released a long, echoing groan as two massive locks broke apart.
The sound rolled across the continent like distant thunder.
Far below, the Hollow King stepped backward.
His crimson eyes narrowed.
"No..."
"It cannot awaken yet."
For the first time, fear was unmistakable in his voice.
Roland Thorne climbed from the ruins of the fortress, his corrupted armor slowly repairing itself.
He laughed bitterly.
"So..."
"Even you fear your creator."
The Hollow King turned toward him with burning fury.
"Silence!"
"I was never its servant."
"I merely survived."
Those words sent a chill through every defender.
Commander Selene Voss slowly drew her twin curved swords.
"If that monster fears whatever lies behind the gate..."
"...then we cannot allow it to escape."
Victoria nodded.
"Everyone, hold your positions."
"No one approaches the gate."
Cole Mercer climbed onto the broken remains of a watchtower.
Through his rifle scope he watched the enormous doorway carefully.
"It’s opening."
Only a narrow crack appeared between the ancient doors.
Yet from that thin opening poured a black mist unlike the Hollow King’s corruption.
It carried no crimson light.
No hatred.
No rage.
Only endless silence.
Every zombie across the battlefield froze completely.
The Abyss Walkers lowered their weapons.
Even the Hollow Guard fell motionless, staring toward the gate as though awaiting a forgotten command.
Lucas Reed swallowed hard.
"They’re listening."
"To what?"
Before anyone answered, a single sound drifted from the darkness beyond the gate.
A heartbeat.
Slow.
Deep.
Ancient.
Boom...
Boom...
Boom...
Each beat shook the mountain more violently than the last.
The Crown upon Victoria’s head suddenly flashed with brilliant golden light.
The Dawnblade began humming in her hands.
The spirits of the Thirteen Marshals appeared behind her without warning.
Marshal Isabella Ashcroft looked directly at Victoria.
"The Crown remembers."
"The enemy before you is older than kingdoms..."
"...older than the Black Star..."
"...older even than the Hollow King."
The Last Sentinel emerged from the golden bridge leading out of the Heart Forge.
For the first time since his awakening, he knelt—not before the Crown, but before the ancient gate.
"I know this presence."
His voice was filled with solemn reverence.
"The First Fallen."
Without warning, one colossal stone door slowly opened another few feet.
From the darkness emerged a gigantic hand covered not in flesh or armor, but in smooth black stone etched with glowing silver veins.
Its enormous fingers curled around the edge of the gate.
The Hollow King took another step backward.
His confident smile was gone.
Victoria raised the Dawnblade as its white flames blazed brighter than the sun.
She realized the battle against the Hollow King had only been one Chapter of a much older war.
The true enemy had finally begun to awaken.
