Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition
Chapter 2534: Story 2535: The Devourer’s ShadowThe summit of Blackstone Ridge shattered beneath the weight of the monstrous claw.
Jagged obsidian talons dug into the ancient mountain, tearing through stone as though it were soft clay. Crimson veins pulsed beneath the black scales, spreading a foul light across the battlefield.
The scream that followed was unlike anything the world had ever heard.
It carried no anger.
No triumph.
Only endless hunger.
Every survivor covered their ears as the sound echoed across the frontier.
Victoria Kane planted the Dawnblade into the fractured stone to steady herself.
The Crown of the Black Star blazed above her brow, surrounding her with a shield of golden light that pushed back the darkness creeping across the summit.
"What... is that thing?" Lucas Reed whispered.
The Last Sentinel stepped beside Victoria, his war hammer glowing with ancient runes.
"The Devourer."
"The oldest servant of the Darkness."
"It existed before kings, before kingdoms... before mankind learned to write its first words."
Arkanis’s silver eye remained fixed upon the monstrous claw.
For the first time, sorrow filled the ancient gaze.
"It was never meant to awaken."
Far below, the Hollow King stared at the claw with undisguised dread.
"I sealed it beneath you."
"I sacrificed everything to imprison it!"
Arkanis answered calmly.
"You sealed nothing."
"You merely delayed its hunger."
Another violent tremor split the summit.
The claw dragged itself farther from the abyss.
A second claw emerged beside the first.
Together they gripped the edge of the shattered prison, pulling against the ancient stone.
The black gate groaned under unimaginable strain.
Commander Selene Voss pointed her twin blades toward the widening chasm.
"Archers!"
"Hold that opening!"
Thousands of arrows darkened the sky.
The volley struck the Devourer’s claws in a storm of steel.
Every arrow shattered on impact.
Not a single scratch marked the obsidian scales.
Cole Mercer fired one of the remaining silver rounds from his rifle.
The bullet struck a glowing crimson vein.
For the first time, the creature reacted.
A low growl echoed from the abyss.
"It felt that!" Cole shouted.
Dr. Evelyn Brooks hurriedly opened Elias Crow’s journal.
"I found another passage!"
She read aloud,
"The Devourer cannot be slain by ordinary weapons. Only the Light that binds every willing soul can wound the Endless Hunger."
Father Gabriel looked toward Victoria.
"The Crown..."
"...and the Dawnblade."
Victoria nodded.
"Then we don’t fight alone."
She raised the Dawnblade toward the heavens.
The Crown answered.
Thirteen golden rays burst outward, touching every defender upon the summit.
Soldiers.
Scouts.
Hunters.
Even the wounded felt warmth flowing through their hearts.
Their fear began to fade.
The spirits of the Thirteen Marshals stepped among them, placing glowing hands upon countless shoulders.
Hope spread through the army like fire through dry grass.
Roland Thorne watched the miracle in silence.
The corruption covering his armor flickered uncertainly.
Victoria turned toward him.
"You still have a choice."
"The Hollow King used your ambition."
"The Devourer will erase even that."
Roland looked at the colossal claw clawing its way from the abyss.
For the first time in more than a century, he remembered the oath he had once sworn as a Marshal.
To protect humanity.
Not rule it.
His crimson eye dimmed slightly.
Then the Hollow King roared.
"Do not listen to her!"
"You belong to me!"
Roland slowly lowered his head.
"No..."
His voice was quiet.
"But it grew stronger with every word.
"I belonged to the Black Star first."
The corruption surrounding his body cracked like breaking glass.
Golden light escaped through the fractures in his armor.
Gideon Black stared in astonishment.
"He’s resisting the corruption."
Before anyone could speak again, the Devourer pulled itself higher.
A colossal horned head began rising from the abyss.
Its eyes remained closed, yet the mountain shook with every breath it drew.
Arkanis’s voice echoed across the battlefield.
"Last Marshal..."
"The Hollow King was your greatest battle."
"The Devourer..."
"...is the war that decides whether the world itself survives."
The Dawnblade burned brighter than ever as Victoria stepped toward the edge of the abyss, knowing the final Chapter of humanity’s struggle had begun.
