How to Bring Common Sense to Xianxia World
Chapter 252: The Act Behind The Curtain— White House —
12 hours after the death of Leviathan, within the Oval Office, President Jonah Crump was having a serious discussion with his NSA (National Security Advisor).
"As requested, Mr. President, this is all of the intel on Dr. Xu Chenguang." The NSA placed a stack of papers on the desk.
The President took the documents and began reading.
After a few minutes passed, he slowly set them down and massaged the bridge of his nose. It had been a long and grueling day, and he had not even seen his family once since the Leviathan incident.
And now... this document in front of him.
It screamed security disaster to anyone who had seen the man named Xu Chenguang in that strategic meeting.
"Tell me, Douglas. Are Homeland Security and our intelligence agencies so useless that even millions of taxpayer dollars can’t help them catch a stranger who infiltrated deep into the White House?"
"And are we really so stupid that none of us even questioned why that stranger was sitting with us during a top-secret strategic meeting? We just assumed he had already passed screening and received clearance?"
"What are we? A group of clowns!?" the President vented his frustration.
Douglas, the President’s NSA, could only let out a sigh.
At the time, even he had not questioned the presence of the man named Dr. Xu Chenguang in the very heart of the United States government. If a bomb had gone off in that room, it would have completely paralyzed the nation’s command structure.
And the reason for all of this was in the papers.
The documents clearly stated that the man named Xu Chenguang was, after all, a dead man.
He had been dead for more than five years.
Yet aside from that fact, everything else was accurate. He had been an expert archaeologist and scholar well versed in folklore and mythology from Peking University.
The question was, how had that dead man simply sat there during a top-secret strategic meeting where information about classified weapons was being discussed, while everyone treated it as perfectly normal?
Or at least, until the Leviathan matter was resolved, nobody questioned it. Not once did suspicion arise.
Every single person had somehow assumed that he must have already passed security screening. Otherwise, why would he be sitting among them?
"What about the security footage? Did anyone see him enter?" the President asked.
"No, Mr. President. The investigation found that none of our staff or security personnel saw him arrive. It was as if he simply appeared in the meeting room."
"Even before the meeting, the CCTV footage never showed him entering the room. And after the meeting, it never showed him leaving either," said the NSA.
"Are you telling me that all of us in that room just had a conversation with a ghost?" the President sneered.
"As your NSA, it probably doesn’t sound good if I say this, Mr. President. But... we already have a Kaiju that looks like it jumped straight out of a Chinese fairy tale. A ghost might not be the strangest thing we’re going to face from now on."
"Haaa... you’re right..." President Jonah sighed.
"So what’s next? Aliens?" the President asked with dry humor.
"Mr. President..." The NSA paused.
That pause immediately gave the President the urge to massage his temples.
"God... don’t tell me we’ve found an alien planet."
"It might not be too far off the mark, sir... We’ve discovered an underwater cave beneath the Mississippi River containing a strange energy barrier that resembles some kind of portal," said the NSA.
— Meanwhile - Immortal Realm —
Atop a cloud-piercing peak stood a vast jade palace. Golden engravings woven throughout its white structure gleamed brilliantly, like a beacon of the Immortal World itself.
At its center stood a towering pagoda that rose above the palace. On the highest floor stood a man with handsome and charismatic features. His sword-like brows and the enlightenment mark between them gave him a heroic aura that inspired awe in all who beheld him.
He was dressed in white and gold, with gleaming armor protecting his body at all times. Holding a fan beneath his chin, he gazed across the sea of clouds, overlooking the affairs of the world.
This place was his realm.
As one of the contenders for the seat of the Immortal Emperor, he naturally possessed territory of his own, land that he had carved out and seized from one of the other contenders.
There existed three contenders for the seat of Immortal Emperor, and he was one of them.
If he could kill the other two, the right to challenge the Immortal Emperor and seize the throne would become his.
The problem was that he did not know who the other two contenders were.
The laws of Heaven and Earth within the Immortal Realm worked in such a way that an Immortal Emperor’s reign would remain stable for roughly ten thousand years, depending on the strength of the Immortal Emperor.
If the Immortal Emperor was powerful, the Heavenly Dao would remain with him for a longer period. Eventually, however, the Heavenly Dao would shatter and scatter. Half of it would remain with the Immortal Emperor, while the other half would disperse throughout existence.
Those fragments would then be found and collected by individuals blessed with fortune and ambition.
The holders of the Heavenly Dao shards could be anyone, from an Immortal Sovereign to a simple mortal in the Lower Realms.
Thus, identifying the shard holders was one of the most difficult tasks faced by both the Immortal Emperor and the contenders.
Killing the contenders and seizing their shards was one of the primary objectives of both sides.
For the Immortal Emperor, recovering the shards and restoring the Heavenly Dao would solidify his rule for another cycle, extending the time before the cycle restarted once more.
For the contenders, obtaining more shards granted the power to resist the Immortal Emperor’s law manipulation. If one managed to gather half of the Heavenly Dao, they would become immune to the Immortal Emperor’s authority and gain the ability to kill him and seize the throne.
Xiao Ye’s ambition was to become the Immortal Emperor and control his own destiny.
To him, even Heaven itself had no right to manipulate his fate.
He would become the true master of his destiny.
Billions of lives would bow before him and follow his will. No one would be allowed to stand above him.
This was his Dao....
The Dao of Domination.
At that moment, he sensed movement behind him.
It was a familiar aura.
"How was it, Brother Xu? Have you investigated the anomaly?" Xiao Ye asked without turning around.
A man in his fifties stepped out from the shadows inside the pagoda and into the light.
If President Jonah had been present, he would have recognized him immediately.
It was none other than Xu Chenguang.
"I’ve already investigated it, but it’s a worthless realm. It possesses no spiritual qi, no usable resources, and the realm itself is more than a hundred times smaller than ours. The only thing of interest is that the mortals there, despite having no cultivation, are capable of creating powerful weapons."
Xu Chenguang replied as his modern clothing slowly transformed into the robes commonly worn by cultivators.
His aged appearance gradually faded. The old man became a young man in his mid-twenties, and a golden mask materialized to cover his face.
"Oh? Interesting. How powerful are these weapons? Can we make use of them?" Xiao Ye asked with interest.
"Their weapons are useless to us. A single palm strike from one of us would be enough to match their power."
Xu Chenguang replied calmly.
"I see. Then it truly is a useless realm after all. There’s no need for us to invest in it."
"That is correct." Xu Chenguang nodded.
"So..." Xiao Ye began as he turned around to face the man in the golden mask. "Do we know who the other two contenders are yet, Brother Xu?"
"I’m working on it. It won’t be long before I can give you a definite answer, Brother Xiao."
The man in the golden mask spoke calmly. With his expression hidden behind the mask, it was impossible for Xiao Ye to read his thoughts.
"That’s fine. I can wait. I only hope you won’t make things difficult for me while searching for the most suitable patron for your great work."
Xiao Ye smiled, though there was little warmth in that smile.
"Wasn’t that part of the excitement? You know as well as I do what you’re getting into by making a deal with me. I do not betray because I want to. Everything happens because fate dictates it. A man who seeks to outrun fate, such as yourself, would never understand me."
The man in the golden mask replied.
"Fate dictates it? Hah!"
Xiao Ye sneered.
"Don’t think I don’t know that you’ve cultivated some strange cultivation method that allows you to play with the fate of others. Isn’t that right, Fate Weaving Sovereign?"
