— Morning —
Wei Chen woke up to the touch of soft, smooth skin brushing against his lips. The fragrance of a woman’s body and silky hair tickled his nose.
Opening his eyes, he saw Dream Butterfly using a lock of her hair like a brush to tease him awake. The two lay beneath the blanket, and the memories of last night’s activities quickly resurfaced in his mind.
"Are you sure you want to do this first thing in the morning? I’ll have you know, I’m not some sage who’s good at holding back his horny side," Wei Chen said bluntly as he kissed Dream Butterfly’s soft lips while she continued enjoying herself.
"Ufufu... then I’ll welcome it, Lord Husband," she replied with a giggle.
"Very tempting... but we should get up. Otherwise, Yaoyao, or worse, little Ningning, might barge in here while we’re still wrestling with each other," said Wei Chen.
"Haa~ You’re right, Lord Husband." Dream Butterfly let out a reluctant sigh before stopping her playful teasing.
She quickly changed into a simple robe before helping her husband take a quick bath and get dressed.
"Good morning! Yuyu! Are you..."
A jovial voice shattered the peaceful atmosphere between them just as Dream Butterfly was helping Wei Chen put on his inner robe.
It was Mo Xingyao, who had barged into the tent without warning.
She froze on the spot.
Dream Butterfly was dressed in a simple robe, and the thin fabric made it easy to notice the flawless skin beneath. It was obvious that she wore nothing else underneath.
As for Wei Chen, his broad chest and well-defined physique were clearly visible from Mo Xingyao’s perspective.
"Ahhhh! You lewd shameless couple!"
Mo Xingyao screamed before immediately fleeing with her face flushed bright red.
"There goes our peaceful morning. At this rate, the entire camp will know what we did last night before breakfast." Wei Chen let out a sigh and resigned himself to fate.
"Ahaha~ As I said last night, there was no need to use a soundproof barrier. If anyone wants to be nosy, then let them know," Dream Butterfly said with a mischievous smile.
"Why do I get the feeling you’re becoming more and more mischievous?" Wei Chen asked with a wry smile.
"If I’ve changed, it’s because of you, Lord Husband," Dream Butterfly replied lightly as she gently pinched Wei Chen’s cheek after finishing dressing him.
"Now you’re presentable. You may go out. I’ll follow later."
With that, she pushed Wei Chen out of the bedroom section before taking a quick bath herself.
Coming out of the tent, Wei Chen saw Mo Xingyao glaring at him with a pout on her face.
"Hmph! You bad egg! You led my sweet little Yuyu astray!"
"Why does it sound like you’re sulking because you wanted to join in?" Wei Chen said with a mischievous smile.
"Join in your head! You shameless bad egg!"
"Did you forget that you’re the one who started all of this by feeding us an aphrodisiac?" Wei Chen countered.
Hearing this, Mo Xingyao’s face instantly turned red like a tomato.
Without another word, she pounced on Wei Chen. Opening her mouth wide, she chomped down on his arm.
"Ah!"
But instead of Wei Chen’s usual scream, it was a short yelp from Mo Xingyao.
She quickly retreated and held her jaw.
"Awwww... you meanie. You didn’t even let me bite you," Mo Xingyao protested.
"Why would I do that? I’m not a masochist. Also, stop biting people whenever you can’t win an argument," Wei Chen retorted.
Mo Xingyao continued sulking.
"But you always let me bite you. Otherwise, how could I ever bite through your skin? You know as well as I do that normal teeth can’t harm a cultivator’s body."
"As I said, I’m not a masochist. I’ve never deliberately lowered my defenses just to let you bite me," Wei Chen replied matter-of-factly.
"Huh? You never did? Then how?" Mo Xingyao was stunned.
If he never deliberately lowered his defenses, then how had she managed it?
"Have you ever let someone examine your teeth? I mean, isn’t it strange that your teeth can penetrate the defenses of someone stronger than you?" he asked.
"I’ve never thought about it. After all... You’re the first person I’ve ever felt like biting."
Wei Chen: ...
"Never mind. Stop fussing about my teeth. Are you going to return soon, or are you planning to travel around the Vermilion Bird Province a little longer?" she asked.
Wei Chen shook his head before replying, "I think I need to stay here for some time."
"Huh? Why? Didn’t you already beat up all those idiots from the three Ancient Hidden Forces?"
"Nah, I was never here because of those brain-dead Ancient Hidden Forces in the first place. They were just here asking for a beating, and I merely reciprocated their feelings. I came here to fix the problem under the water." Wei Chen said as he pointed his thumb toward the Emerald River not far away.
"It’s an Underworld Palace matter?" she asked.
Wei Chen nodded.
"In that case, I won’t pry. Just take care of yourself, okay? I need to go back to..."
Mo Xingyao nodded in understanding, but before she could say she was going back, Wei Chen suddenly pulled her into a hug.
"What!? What are you doing!? So suddenly?" she protested lightly and tried to push him away.
However, her strength was never meant to be serious. She was merely protesting out of embarrassment, worried that others might see them in such an awkward situation.
"There is a teleportation circle here, you know. I think I might need to stay here for months. Maybe even a year, actually. You can use the teleportation circle to travel back and forth between the Thousand Treasure Pavilion and this place." Wei Chen said while holding her close.
"Or... maybe it should be the other way around? You’ll come visit me, right?" Mo Xingyao asked.
Just hearing that possibility made her feel much better.
"Of course."
With that promise in place, Mo Xingyao smiled.
She lowered her head, trying to hide the smile threatening to spread across her face. She did not want this bad egg to realize just how happy she was.
Lest he get strange ideas and start teasing her again before she was ready.
She did not know how much longer she could resist this warm, sweet feeling growing in her heart. If this keeps up she might have.....
Thinking that far ahead, Mo Xingyao’s face flushed red once again, embarrassed by her own lewd and shameless thoughts.
"Hey! You two over there! Get a room, will you!?"
Ximen Hao’s irritated voice suddenly rang out.
Wei Chen turned and saw the man walking over with his butler. In his hands was a plate loaded with sausages, mashed potatoes covered in gravy, a serving of salted beans, and several poached eggs.
It seemed breakfast in the mess tent was ready.
What surprised Wei Chen was that the haughty young master himself had simply walked into the mess tent, queued up with everyone else, taken a standard portion like any ordinary warrior, and walked out carrying a glass of water.
"Never thought I’d see you queue up for food like a normal person, Ximen Hao," Wei Chen commented.
"Hey! What do you mean by that? Do I look like some pampered young master who can’t even stand in line?" Ximen Hao retorted before pausing.
"You know what? Never mind. You don’t need to answer that."
With that said, Ximen Hao walked toward a seat near the riverbank and sat down to enjoy the morning air while eating breakfast.
Usually, cultivators, especially those with high cultivation, did not need to eat. Spiritual qi alone was enough to sustain them, and eating was merely a form of entertainment.
However, since most of the people here belonged to Wei Chen’s personal forces, he had established a policy that encouraged everyone under his command to live as ordinary mortals whenever possible and never forget their roots. It started with simple things like eating regular meals.
It just so happened that for cultivators, any food they consumed would eventually be converted into energy and absorbed by their dantian, slightly increasing their spiritual qi reserves. So eating was not entirely without benefit.
Besides, a mess hall, or in this case a mess tent, helped keep people grounded. It also provided an opportunity for social gatherings every day. People could gather there, share meals, and talk about their daily lives.
Since this world already had more than enough aloof, self-important cultivators, Wei Chen did not want his own people becoming the same. At the very least, they needed to stay grounded and understand how ordinary mortals thought so they could develop genuine empathy.
That was the reason he enforced policies that encouraged his people to sleep and eat like mortals.
As for cultivation, his people could train inside The Myriad Realms Epiphany Pagoda.
That alone was more than enough to make up for the time spent living a normal life.
