’A hidden laboratory, they said.’
Eiros reached the edge of the eastern forest. It was a vast forest, vast enough that several kinds of Awakened-tier monsters could be seen wandering around. Each of them seemed to carry only low-rank Soul Stones.
Which meant they wouldn’t pose much of a threat to Eiros. Well, never mind that — focus on the task at hand. Eiros kept moving at a fair height above the ground, since he had no idea where to find these Black Genesis people, so he decided to scout from the sky instead.
The deeper Eiros moved into the eastern forest, the farther he drifted from the city of Augusta. His surroundings grew quiet, the wind blew harder than before, and by the time he noticed it, he found himself looking down at an abandoned shrine.
That in itself wasn’t unusual. But the problem was, he could see several long-dead monsters scattered around it. Eiros hesitated, then slowly descended from the sky and landed gently.
The stench of monster carcasses hung thick in the air, blood splattered here and there, and off to one side, Eiros spotted the body of a man.
"Hmm... What happened here?" he wondered, his gaze drifting toward the inside of the shrine.
Some kind of fight had broken out here, for whatever reason. It was possible this was somehow connected to what Eiros was looking for.
He walked over to the man’s body for a moment and examined it. There was nothing unusual about it — the man had clearly been killed by a monster, judging from the wounds, which had torn through parts of his body with large, deep slashes.
Eiros searched the man’s pockets, and all he found was a plain ID card and a mask.
"Codename Hawk?"
His gaze then shifted to the mask, which bore the face of a hawk. It didn’t cover the whole face — only the eyes and the bridge of the nose — its surface a pale cream, tinged with yellow.
Beyond that, Eiros found nothing else. He decided to head into the shrine itself. The building was old and crumbling, its interior thick with dust, insects crawling here and there, and some of the inscriptions on the walls were written in text he couldn’t even read.
Just how old was this place?
But apparently it wasn’t important enough for the Empire to have bothered with it at all.
"But hey, what exactly is this?" Eiros hummed lightly to himself, casually eyeing a statue shaped like a humanoid wolf, seated in a cross-legged pose. Beneath it, deep, dark gaps split the stone.
Eiros manifested without wasting any time.
Craaack—!
Baamm!
The statue shattered under his attack, dust scattering into the air. Eiros covered his face, wincing as he watched the dust slowly settle and fade away.
And sure enough, an underground chamber came into view. There had clearly been some kind of mechanism meant to open this space in the past, but Eiros had no patience for puzzles, so he simply chose to smash his way through instead.
Looking down the dark passage stretching deep into the underground chamber, Eiros stepped in without hesitation, giving it no further thought.
He made his way down the stairs, descending step after spiraling step. There was no light anywhere, and the further down Eiros went, the more he found himself wondering just how far down this thing actually went.
The sound of his footsteps echoed back at him even when he moved slowly, and somewhere in the distance, the sound of dripping water echoed too, growing louder the deeper he descended.
The darkness around him grew heavier as well. Fortunately, after what felt like an endless spiral of stairs, Eiros finally reached the bottom. A dark corridor stretched out clearly before him.
The corridor was massive. He could have built an entire yard in there, or even fit six fairly tall houses side by side, given how wide the space was.
Without hesitation, Eiros stepped forward. He found that the corridor worked in a strange way. What he was standing on was a giant bridge leading to a gate up ahead, and beyond its edges there was no path at all, only a drop leading straight down.
Below was a body of water, the source of the dripping sound he’d been hearing the whole time, one that never seemed to stop. And standing along the edges of the bridge, atop great pillars forming a row of podiums, were massive statues.
There were four of them: a human, a furred, wolf-shaped humanoid creature, something that resembled a dwarf, and last, an extremely tall being with a pair of small, transparent wings on its back.
’What is this place?’
Eiros didn’t dare make a sound, worried his voice might echo. He felt a strong pull of curiosity about the history of this place, but he had to set that aside, since his priorities lay elsewhere.
He let out a sigh, forcing his gaze away, and stepped forward across the bridge running through that massive tunnel.
Strangely enough, everything around him was so quiet that every so often, Eiros felt his whole body shudder at even the slightest movement. Without quite realizing it, he started to feel a little pale, a little heavy.
This wasn’t something Eiros failed to understand. Thanks to Renessa, he’d actually learned a thing or two about places like this.
’A place that makes you feel awful, makes you feel so alone it turns terrifying, is a place saturated with negative energy. And places like that are usually filled with the corpses of living things that suffered greatly.’
In short, this place was probably crawling with malevolent spirits. Thinking about that with the face of the White Swan, the personality itself made the White Swan’s expression darken.
Why wouldn’t it?
The White Swan was a character overflowing with expression. If Eiros felt afraid, that expression would come out completely exaggerated.
Steadying himself, Eiros reached the gate. It was a plain, massive gate, left slightly ajar to reveal a narrow gap. Eiros hesitated, but then quickly stepped forward and slipped through into the space beyond.
He found himself in yet another tunnel. This one had a rounded ceiling and stretched far ahead, showing no sign of an end.
But that hardly mattered, because what mattered was what lay to his left and right, and on either side of the path ahead, thick panes of existential green glass lined the walls.
And inside that space were far too many objects resembling sleep pods, along with glass tubes filled with water. Most of them were still intact, though some had shattered, and worst of all, a few clearly showed something that had been rotting inside for a very long time.
A massive energy conduit stood at the center of it all. The structure had countless giant tubes, each about the size of a human body, running along the ceiling and stretching off toward some unknown destination.
Whatever kind of energy flowed through them was impossible to say. But judging by how the tubes connected to every glass container and sleep pod, it was easy enough to guess that it was tied to whatever this laboratory had been researching.
Eiros felt his entire body freeze up at the sheer scale of it, but he didn’t linger long. That was because he spotted a few figures moving through the room, searching for something.
Their voices echoed:
"There’s nothing here. Let’s move to the next room."
"What about that body over there? Sure, it’s rotted, but that’s still a body from a race that’s been extinct for ages, you know."
"Forget it. Focus on our actual objective."
"Alriighhtt~"
