[HP] - Adventure Book [Xover]
Chapter 147: Chap.144 - Snape crosses the line.Snape walked around the room with his long black cloak dragging on the floor, undulating as if in slow motion, clearly a purely aesthetic spell, but Rigel still thought Snape looked very good that way.
Snape was watching them weigh dried nettles and pound snake fangs, criticizing almost everyone except Draco, whom he seemed to like.
He had just told everyone to look at the perfect way Draco had cooked the slugs, even though Rigel had done much better not far away, Neville hadn't made any mistakes either, Rigel had let him work with the plant materials while explaining what each material should do in the potion, especially the plants.
Neville seemed to forget his insecurities for a moment, instead finding himself truly enjoying the moment.
Snape walked past them, narrowing his eyes slightly. He didn't like Rigel, after all, he reminded him of Sirius, but the more he observed, the less of Sirius he saw in Rigel, except for his dark eyes and hair.
In the end, he pursed his lips and ignored Rigel and Neville, if they had made a mistake, even a small one, he would have taken the opportunity to deduct points from Gryffindor. Unfortunately, they hadn't made a mistake, not having points deducted was, in fact, a compliment on Snape's part.
Rigel didn't have many thoughts regarding Snape, the man carried a heavy burden on his shoulders, but taking it out on the students didn't help. In the end, as long as Snape didn't have Rigel as a direct target, he would do as the man did, simply ignore him.
Rigel didn't let Neville do anything more complicated than processing the materials, he prepared the potion himself, quietly explaining what he was doing and why, sometimes adding some interesting fact about the potion, which directly interested Neville.
In the end, Neville wasn't a bad student, far from it, he just had a lot of anxiety and couldn't concentrate when people were pressuring him. He was the type who improved most with kind and patient professors.
Snape was the complete opposite of that, which is why most of Neville's mistakes happened in that class. It is also the reason why, in his third year, Neville's boggart turned into Professor Snape.
"Black, talking during class, one point less for Gryffindor." Rigel heard Snape's voice as he ignored it and continued explaining to Neville.
He thought Snape just wanted to take away a few points, not that he was singling him out, unfortunately, he underestimated just how petty the man could be toward Gryffindors, even those whose surname wasn't Potter.
Neville, upon seeing Snape focused on them, shrank completely, losing all interest in what Rigel was saying and trembling all over as Snape walked past.
"Ignoring the professor, two points less for Gryffindor." Snape continued, clearly annoyed with Rigel's lack of reaction.
Rigel sensed that this wouldn't work, he wanted Snape to ignore him, but the man's refusal to do so left him utterly furious. He realized that if he gave his hand, Snape would ask for his arm, so he decided to put an end to that stupid game right then and there.
Just because Rigel had been acting like a well-behaved child lately didn't mean he had forgotten the backbone he'd forged while sailing among buccaneers.
"Professor, I have some interesting stories I've heard. I think you and my colleagues would love to hear the story of the Half-Blood Prince and his beloved 'lily'. What do you think?" Rigel asked, his eyes cold, looking directly at Snape, who froze, his pale face turned even paler at that moment, just before a sinister fury nearly made him draw his wand, but before he could say anything, Rigel continued, "Perhaps I'll let the whole school hear about this marvelous story..."
Snape looked at Rigel with blatant hatred, he didn't say anything, but seeing Rigel's completely cold eyes, he was somewhat surprised. Those eyes were not something a child should have.
Rigel wanted to keep a low profile, but since Snape wouldn't leave him alone, he would see who had more 'fury' between them.
"Black, nobody's interested in your stories, now shut up and concentrate on your potion." Snape spoke with evident irritation, giving Rigel one last cold look before walking away.
The kids didn't understand what had just happened, Snape didn't look much different on the outside, nor did Rigel, so few were clever enough to grasp the subtext of what had just occurred.
"Hey, Rigel, what's this all about?" Seamus leaned towards Rigel as Snape walked away.
"Nothing, I misremembered, there's no story at all." Rigel shrugged and ignored the confused Seamus.
Neville seemed no longer willing to learn, not so much as to tremble at Snape's eyes which kept turning towards Rigel.
Rigel stopped trying to teach Neville and simply finished the potion. Snape assessed their potion and said nothing, this counted as a pass.
The rest of the class was silent, even the Slytherin students seemed to notice Snape was annoyed. He even stopped praising Draco and deducting points from Gryffindor.
When the lesson ended, Snape's eyes focused on Rigel, clearly showing cruelty, his eyes suggested that if Rigel dared to say anything, Snape would poison his food.
Rigel's gaze showed obvious mockery, Snape had managed to irritate him. He just wanted to be left in peace, if he ignored him now, Snape would treat his silence as weakness.
Rigel felt a Legilimens probe in his mind when their eyes met, but instead of getting angry, he showed him a scene, the scene of him being 'hung' with his pants down by the Marauders.
Snape paled, his hatred almost making him curse Rigel, but Rigel merely cast one last mocking glance before leaving the room.
Snape followed him with his eyes.
Rigel sighed as he left the room. He knew he could kill Snape if he went all out, especially at Hogwarts where he couldn't Apparate, but the ensuing trouble wasn't worth it.
This wasn't the world of Pirates of the Caribbean, he needed to take things slowly.
For a moment, he actually considered killing Snape, he knew his mindset had been affected by the adventure, but now he couldn't let himself get carried away. He had to adapt to the role, he was no longer Rigel, the Pirate King, but Rigel, the first-year Gryffindor student.
"Hey, Rigel." Rigel heard a call.
It was Harry, looking gratefully at him along with the other boys. "Thank you for your help, if it weren't for you, I wouldn't have known how to answer Snape's questions."
The other boys also looked at Rigel in surprise, asking how he did it.
"It's a spell to send your voice far away, you can find it in 'Sound Spells and Their Applications' by Albert Collins." Rigel explained.
The boys were surprised, Seamus was already thinking about how to use this to cheat, but Rigel clearly stated that there were protections against that type of spell during the exams.
Sure, Rigel directly controlled the wind to do that, without actually using a spell himself, so he could get away with it, but he wouldn't tell them.
"We're going to Hagrid's hut, the gamekeeper's, after lunch. Do you want to come?" Harry asked, mainly to Rigel, who had helped him, but his invitation was addressed to all the Gryffindor boys.
Ron seemed annoyed by this, but said nothing, after all, it was Harry whom Hagrid had invited.
"No, Dean and I are going to borrow Fred and George's brooms, they're giving us a lesson for the Quidditch tryouts next week." Seamus shrugged and looked at Rigel. "Do you want to go too?"
"No need." Rigel shook his head, instead, this reminded him to ask Calypso to send the broom, he needed to keep his promise to Draco. "I'll go see the gamekeeper. I heard he 'lives' in the Forbidden Forest, he must know a lot of interesting things."
Rigel turned to Neville and spoke. "Are you coming? He must also know about the magical plants in the Forbidden Forest."
Rigel had been planning to go to the Black Lake that afternoon, but that could wait, visiting Hagrid would bring him even closer to the group.
Neville, who had remembered Hagrid, was ready to refuse, but upon hearing this, he immediately changed his mind.
Although a bit afraid of the giant, he felt safe going along with the three of them. He nodded shyly.
