HP: Beyond Miracle

Chapter 298 - 298: Time Flies

The negotiations did not go well.

Dumbledore refused to budge on the Elder Wand.

He insisted on keeping something that no longer truly belonged to him, even if it meant abandoning the deal altogether.

Dawn tried every argument he could think of.

In the end, seeing how unwavering the old Headmaster was, he reluctantly settled for the next best option.

In exchange for the locations of Voldemort's Horcruxes, he received a vast collection of advanced Transfiguration knowledge.

Dumbledore also promised that once the Horcruxes had been recovered, Dawn would be allowed to deal with them personally.

The Headmaster would preserve and hand over both Slytherin's Locket and Hufflepuff's Cup to him.

Although Dawn wasn't particularly satisfied with the price... He truly didn't want Voldemort lingering around causing more trouble.

After some consideration, he accepted the slight loss.

By the time the negotiation ended...

Both of them were mentally exhausted.

Draining his third cup of tea, Dumbledore rubbed his temples.

"One last question.

How exactly was the fragment of Voldemort's soul inside Harry removed without harming him?"

"Oh, that."

Dawn looked equally worn out.

He popped a sour candy into his mouth to stay awake, no longer bothering to hide anything.

"There were several factors.

In Harry Potter, Voldemort used Harry's blood during his resurrection.

That meant part of Lily's sacrificial protection became bound to Voldemort himself.

On top of that... When Voldemort cast the Killing Curse at Harry, he was using the Elder Wand.

But by then... The Elder Wand's true master was already Harry.

So...

It was probably the combination of those two circumstances that allowed Harry to survive the second Killing Curse and destroy the fragment of Voldemort's soul."

He briefly summarized the process.

Dumbledore immediately fell into thought, stroking his beard.

Before any ideas could fully take shape... Dawn crushed them without mercy.

"Headmaster

If you're planning to recreate those conditions... I'd advise giving up now."

Leaning comfortably back in his chair, he continued, "After returning from Egypt... I dug up Voldemort's father's bones."

"Burned them to ashes. And scattered them into the sea.

By now they're probably impossible to recover.

In other words... The resurrection ritual described in Harry Potter can never happen again.

Voldemort won't be using Harry's blood.

And besides... I'm the Elder Wand's master now.

So don't waste your time trying to manipulate me into losing to Harry just so ownership transfers to him."

He made his position perfectly clear.

"So, Headmaster... You'll have to think of another solution."

"I understand."

Realizing that particular chain of events could never be repeated, Dumbledore sighed helplessly and pressed his fingers against his temple.

Eyes half-closed, he began organizing everything he had learned, searching for any useful clues.

Just then... Dawn spoke again.

"Personally... I think you're overcomplicating things.

Harry's the Chosen One, isn't he? Sacrifice one person to eliminate Voldemort forever.

Seems like a bargain to me."

"Dawn." Without even looking up, Dumbledore immediately replied, "Life is not something to be weighed on a scale."

"And we have no right to demand another person's sacrifice."

After a brief pause, he added softly, "Besides... As the hero of Harry Potter... A happy ending suits the story far better."

"A storybook?" Dawn laughed with interest. "You actually believe in that?"

"Headmaster...

Reality isn't a novel. Things don't remain unchanged simply because they were written that way.

Compared to the Harry Potter I remember... This world has already become something entirely different."

He shook his head as though the idea were absurd.

Yet at the same time... His thoughts drifted toward the prophecy surrounding Harry.

Prophecies in the wizarding world were fascinating.

Unlike Muggle speculation... They didn't simply reveal one possibility among countless futures.

Here...

A prophecy resembled a decree. Something destined to arrive.

Perhaps...

It had something to do with the world's linear timeline.

Was the future truly predetermined? But if that were true... Then what exactly was his own transmigration?

What about all the changes he'd caused over the years?

Could the dreams he experienced as a child merely have been another unusual magical phenomenon?

Was Harry Potter nothing more than an imperfect story...

Close to reality...

Yet not entirely accurate?

Had his own existence always been part of history's design?

Slowly rubbing his chin, Dawn sank into thought.

Meanwhile...

Dumbledore answered the remark Dawn had made earlier.

"Dawn... Reality isn't a fairy tale. But I will do everything in my power... To make this school into one."

"...Wow."

Dawn returned to the present and let out an exaggerated laugh.

"A fairy tale where eight children die in a single school year? I understand. A dark fairy tale is still a fairy tale."

"..."

At those words...

A shadow passed through Dumbledore's blue eyes.

He sighed quietly.

Offering no defense.

The chair scraped softly across the wooden floor.

"Well.

I've told you everything. I suppose I shouldn't stay here making myself unwelcome."

Dawn stood up.

Fortunately...

He possessed enough self-awareness to recognize exactly how unwelcome he was.

"Oh. One last reminder, Headmaster.

At the moment... Nagini probably hasn't become Voldemort's final Horcrux yet.

But if you fail to eliminate Tom soon...

After everything that's already changed... There's no guarantee his last Horcrux will still be Nagini."

He glanced toward Dumbledore.

"So... Do your best.

You slept for quite a while recently. I doubt you'll mind sleeping a little less."

There was unmistakable resentment hidden in those words.

Dumbledore nodded gravely.

As Dawn prepared to leave, the Headmaster suddenly remembered another question.

"Dawn.

The world you dreamed about as a child... And Harry Potter... What do you think they really were?

Could they have something to do with the Resurrection Stone?"

"...Who knows?"

Dawn narrowed his eyes with an unreadable smile.

The next instant— Phoenix flames erupted. His figure vanished completely.

The explosive burst of magic stirred a powerful gust of wind through the office.

Dumbledore quickly steadied the loose parchments threatening to scatter across the room.

Through the steam rising from the teacups... He gazed silently toward the place where Dawn had disappeared.

No one knew what thoughts occupied his mind.

He remained seated for a long while.

Finally... He reached inside his robes. His fingers closed around a rough wooden shaft.

A moment later... He drew out one of the Deathly Hallows.

The Elder Wand.

He studied it quietly. Then gave it a gentle flick.

The spilled tea upon the desk vanished instantly.

Yet...

He could clearly feel the wand's growing resistance.

Ever since Dawn had defeated him during Christmas... It had no longer acknowledged him as its master.

Dumbledore sighed.

After thinking for a long time... He slowly grasped both ends of the wand.

His hands tightened.

As though preparing to snap it in half.

In his eyes...

The Elder Wand had become a ticking time bomb.

If Dawn ever reclaimed it... The consequences would be unimaginable.

If that was the case... Perhaps it would be better to destroy it forever. Resolve flashed across Dumbledore's face.

But...

He remained frozen in that position.

The veins upon the backs of his hands swelled...

Then slowly relaxed.

His expression became deeply conflicted.

It wasn't because he couldn't bear to part with one of the Deathly Hallows.

Rather...

After hearing Dawn's story...

He couldn't shake the strange intuition that one day this wand would still be needed.

Besides...

If the Resurrection Stone could somehow return... Then what about the Elder Wand?

After hesitating for a long time... He finally sighed.

His hands released the wand.

Completely unharmed... It disappeared back into his robes once more.

The wizarding world remained as turbulent as ever. Yet after returning from Hogwarts...

Dawn shut himself inside his hidden house beneath the Vatican and devoted himself entirely to studying the abstract trait patterns.

He ignored everything happening beyond its walls.

Time slipped by.

Cold winds gave way to blooming vines.

Spring gradually yielded to the heat of midsummer.

Only then...

Did a single letter interrupt his research.

Over the past months... Dawn had gone through seven experimental subjects.

Using the Flesh Separation Curse over and over again, he had identified numerous trait patterns connected to the human body.

Patterns governing bones.

Internal organs.

Healing.

Even more remarkably...

Thanks to the Ageing Potion... He had identified the trait pattern directly connected to age itself.

After experimenting on a dying elderly wizard...

He discovered that merely modifying that single pattern couldn't permanently freeze someone's age or prevent death.

However...

It could restore an elderly person to the body of their youth.

Along with sharper thinking... And the greater capacity for learning that accompanied it.

In short...

Dawn had created quite a number of useful new spells.

He was simply waiting for the right opportunity to reveal them and gather widespread fame.

Naturally...

Not every avenue of research had gone smoothly.

Progress involving the soul remained painfully slow. Soul-related magic was simply too rare.

Even after altering the relevant patterns...

The resulting differences were difficult to detect.

As for discovering the trait pattern responsible for transforming matter into magic... He still had no clue whatsoever.

Letting out an irritated sigh...

Dawn organized the parchments covering his desk before opening the latest letter Fudge had sent him.

He skimmed through it quickly.

According to the letter... Dawn's reputation had now been almost completely restored.

Although a few voices still opposed him... They no longer posed any meaningful threat.

As for the public spell unveiling...

More preparation was needed.

Both the event itself and the public required time to adjust to the concept.

It had therefore been scheduled for one month later.

Fudge also promised that if Dawn's new spells proved impressive enough...

He would do everything in his power to secure him the highest class of the Order of Merlin.

Finally...

In a tone halfway between complaint and accusation...

Fudge mentioned that Gervase Greengrass hoped to meet Dawn personally to discuss his daughter's treatment.

"Greengrass..."

Dawn murmured.

The request sounded troublesome. His first instinct was simply to avoid it altogether.

But after remembering how important his reputation had become... He reluctantly abandoned that idea.

"...Fine."

"I'll make time."

Stretching lazily, Dawn conjured a small flame that reduced the letter between his fingers to drifting ash.

He glanced toward the calendar hanging nearby.

It hadn't been updated for many days.

Since it no longer displayed an accurate date... He decided to Apparate to Britain instead.

There, he purchased recent editions of the Daily Prophet.

Flipping through several newspapers...

He noticed a handful of articles that seemed oddly out of place among the many pieces praising his innocence.

[Anonymous Witness Claims Azkaban Fugitive Sirius Black Seen in Muggle Neighborhood.]

[Believed to Be Hunting Harry Potter in Revenge for His Former Master.]

"So... We've reached this point already."

Dawn set the paper aside.

Although... Now that Dumbledore already knew the truth about Sirius through the dream...

Why hadn't he been released yet? Was Fudge still obstructing the process?

How pathetic.

Shaking the thought away... Dawn prepared to return to his research.

Just then...

A series of clear beeping sounds echoed from a nearby drawer.

Raising an eyebrow, he opened it.

Wrapped carefully in strips of cloth... The Two-Way Mirror had begun glowing once more.

Picking it up, he asked directly, "Headmaster? Do you need something?"

Dumbledore's face appeared in the mirror.

He wasted no time.

"Dawn.

The day after tomorrow... I'll be retrieving Hufflepuff's Cup from Gringotts.

Where would you like to meet afterward?"

"The day after tomorrow?"

Dawn rubbed his chin.

After all this time... Dumbledore was finally making his move.

The prospect of obtaining another relic of the Four Founders noticeably brightened his mood.

"Diagon Alley. I'll wait for you near Gringotts."

Even though Dawn feared very little...

Meeting in such a crowded location would prevent Dumbledore from attempting anything unexpected.

The Headmaster raised no objections.

After agreeing on a time... He ended the call immediately. His dislike for Dawn remained as obvious as ever.

Dawn merely shrugged.

He tossed the mirror back into the drawer.

Although he intended to resume his research... His mind refused to settle.

After thinking it over...

He decided to go outside for a walk instead.

Thus...

The sun and moon completed another cycle.

Two days later...

The Leaky Cauldron.

Harry Potter awoke beneath warm morning sunlight.

Looking around the unfamiliar room... It took him a few moments to remember where he was.

Sitting upright in bed, he thought back over everything that had happened during the holidays.

A long sigh escaped him.

Harry had not enjoyed this summer. Then again... He never enjoyed his holidays.

Especially this year.

With Hogwarts closing early... He had been forced to spend far longer than usual at the Dursleys'.

Before returning there... He had already prepared himself mentally for how miserable it would be.

Even so...

When Aunt Marge began insulting his parents...

He lost control.

His accidental magic inflated her like a balloon and sent her floating away into the sky.

It had felt incredibly satisfying.

Afterward...

Once he calmed down...

He remembered that he'd violated the Ministry's restrictions on underage magic and became rather anxious.

Fortunately...

The Ministry never pursued the matter.

Better yet... The incident had allowed him to escape the Dursleys' house altogether.

Instead... He had been staying comfortably at the Leaky Cauldron.

At first...

That improved his mood considerably.

But...

Every time he remembered the enormous black dog that kept appearing nearby...

His unease returned.

"It isn't an omen of death."

Harry muttered to himself, recalling the illustration on the cover of his Divination textbook.

"It's probably just a stray dog."

Climbing out of bed, he splashed cold water across his face.

Feeling refreshed, Harry left the Leaky Cauldron.

Today was the last day of his holiday. Tomorrow... He would finally return to Hogwarts.

Truthfully...

He had spent months worrying that everything which had happened during the previous school year might force the school to close permanently.

Thankfully...

Things hadn't become quite that disastrous.
