HP: Beyond Miracle

Chapter 303 - 303: "I Am Merlin!"

The Headmaster's office had descended into complete chaos.

Snape and Fudge glared at one another as they traded increasingly heated insults.

One accused the other of occupying his office while accomplishing nothing.

The other fired back by calling Snape a Death Eater who had escaped justice.

The tension in the room grew thicker with every passing second.

Bang! Bang!

At last, Dumbledore had had enough.

He rapped sharply on his desk, cutting off the argument.

Looking directly at the Minister for Magic, he spoke with unmistakable resolve.

"Fudge."

"I refuse."

Fudge's eyes widened in disbelief.

"Dumbledore! We had an agreement!

I ensured Hogwarts could reopen normally. And in return, you agreed to the creation of the Inspector position!"

As he protested loudly, he cautiously glanced toward Dawn beside him, terrified that any failure on his part might earn him another punishment.

Dumbledore answered without hesitation.

"Yes, Fudge. We had an agreement.

But you could appoint anyone you wished. Anyone except Dawn.

That...

I absolutely cannot accept."

Order had only just begun returning to Hogwarts. He refused to allow Dawn to plunge the castle into chaos once more.

For once...

Snape nodded in satisfaction.

At least Dumbledore had finally done something sensible.

Fudge still refused to give up.

Clinging to the authority of the Ministry, he cited laws, public opinion, and every official justification he could think of, passionately defending the dangerous boy standing beside him.

Meanwhile...

Dawn had already finished memorizing Dumbledore's complete special trait patterns.

Rubbing his tired eyes, he glanced toward the window.

The evening was growing late. He had no intention of wasting any more time.

So he spoke plainly.

"Headmaster.

You know me well enough.

If I truly wanted to come back to Hogwarts... You couldn't stop me."

The words immediately silenced Dumbledore.

Because they were true.

With the abilities of a phoenix... Combined with his talent for assuming other identities...

There was no realistic way to prevent Dawn from entering Hogwarts every single time.

Dumbledore pressed a hand against his forehead.

The headache only worsened.

He had previously considered adapting the anti-Apparition enchantments protecting Gringotts so they could guard Hogwarts as well.

But after careful consideration... He had abandoned the idea.

Unlike a sealed vault...

Hogwarts possessed countless entrances.

Even if Apparition were blocked... There were still countless other ways inside.

More importantly... The enchantments prevented phoenix-style Apparition into a location.

They did nothing to stop someone from leaving.

Overall...

The protection simply wasn't worth the effort.

After several moments of silence... Dumbledore looked steadily at the utterly fearless student before him.

"Dawn... I don't understand.

At your current level... There shouldn't be much left at Hogwarts that interests you.

So why are you so determined to return?"

Dawn grinned.

"Because it's fun and interesting."

That was all he said.

Naturally...

He had no intention of mentioning the real reason: The hidden treasures left behind by the Four Founders.

Dumbledore suddenly felt profoundly exhausted.

He had no desire to compromise. Yet at this moment... He genuinely had no better option.

In the end... He reluctantly attempted to negotiate.

"I'll allow you to serve as Inspector.

But... You must first make an Unbreakable Vow. You will swear never to harm any Hogwarts student."

That was his final line.

Dawn rejected it instantly.

"Sorry. I can't do that."

"Why should I burden myself with a completely unnecessary restriction?"

He paused briefly.

Then continued in the same calm tone.

One that somehow carried even greater arrogance.

"And Headmaster...

I think you've misunderstood something. I didn't come here to ask your permission.

I came on behalf of the Ministry... To inform you."

The room instantly fell silent.

Fudge quietly wiped the sweat from his temples.

Even the Aurors accompanying him began exchanging uncomfortable glances.

Dawn, however, couldn't have cared less.

He simply looked at the clock.

Eight o'clock.

Time for bed.

Ever since his dreams had begun revealing fragments of true history... His daily routine had become surprisingly healthy.

Like a well-behaved child... He went to sleep on time every night.

"That settles it, Headmaster."

Dawn concluded the conversation.

"From now on... I'll visit Hogwarts from time to time to inspect potential security risks.

I hope you'll cooperate."

With that...

He turned and walked away.

Watching the small figure depart...

Fudge suddenly found himself imagining what it must feel like to stand in Dawn's shoes.

Unexpectedly...

It felt exhilarating.

Whenever he'd dealt with Dumbledore before... Everything had been wrapped in polite political maneuvering.

Watching someone openly disregard the Headmaster's wishes like this...

It was strangely satisfying.

Snape's expression, meanwhile, darkened further. His hand tightened around his wand.

For one brief moment...

He considered attacking Dawn from behind.

Then he remembered the boy's seemingly immortal nature.

With a cold snort...

He reluctantly abandoned the idea.

And so... Dawn calmly walked away from a room where nearly everyone despised him.

Leaving turmoil in his wake without the slightest concern.

The corridor on the eighth floor was quiet. A cool breeze drifted through the open windows.

As Dawn passed one of them... He paused to look outside.

Night had almost fallen.

The moon shone brightly through the scattered clouds.

By the flickering candlelight below...

He spotted a somewhat weary-looking middle-aged man maintaining order outside the Great Hall.

Remus John Lupin.

Hogwarts' new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor.

A werewolf who transformed every full moon.

Dawn found himself watching quietly.

Last year...

He had briefly considered applying for the Defence Against the Dark Arts position again.

Ultimately...

He'd abandoned the idea.

The job consumed far too much time.

Besides... Perhaps after the previous year's disasters... Hogwarts hadn't publicly advertised the position this time.

Shaking his head... Dawn prepared to leave the castle.

Then...

Another thought suddenly surfaced.

The Marauder's Map.

The map created in part by Lupin himself.

It, too...

Was filled with mysteries.

The magic involved far exceeded what several schoolboys should have been capable of producing.

Could it...

Have some connection to the Castle Consciousness?

The idea appeared without warning.

Thinking it over carefully... The two concepts actually seemed surprisingly compatible.

Perhaps...

There really was a link.

Rubbing his chin thoughtfully... Dawn quietly committed the possibility to memory.

A moment later...

Flames erupted around him.

The fire swallowed his figure whole.

When it faded...

He had already returned to the Vatican.

Sleeping inside Hogwarts was certainly possible. Still... Better to remain in his own territory.

Just in case.

Whoosh!

The scenery blurred.

Moments later...

The familiar warmth of his small wooden cottage returned.

Dawn immediately retrieved the Marauder's Map from his enchanted wallet.

He spent a long while examining every inch of it.

Turning it over repeatedly... Searching for hidden clues.

In the end...

He found nothing useful.

"Oh well. I'll ask Lupin about it when I get the chance." Clicking his tongue softly, he put the map away.

Then he closed his eyes.

Once again...

He carefully reconstructed Dumbledore's special trait patterns in his memory.

Tomorrow...

He intended to create a duplicate and search through the Headmaster's memories.

Only after finishing that mental review did he take a bath and climb into bed.

Rustle...

A faint whisper of wind drifted past the window.

The past few days had left Dawn thoroughly exhausted.

With his eyes closed... Listening to the steady ticking of the clock... His breathing soon settled into a peaceful rhythm.

His consciousness slowly drifted toward the familiar sea of chaos.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Nothing had changed.

Just as it hadn't changed for the past six months.

Dawn sighed inwardly.

He already knew what would happen next. He would hear one or two indistinct sentences...

Then awaken.

"I wonder when I'll finally hear... Or see... Something actually useful."

Though disappointed...

He forced himself to stay focused.

If his attention wandered even briefly... He might miss those precious fragments of conversation.

Soon...

Voices emerged from the darkness.

"Who are you?"

As always... The words were blurred and distant.

Yet this time...

Dawn froze.

Because he recognized the voice. It was his own. As a child.

Immediately...

He searched through his current memories. Had he ever spoken those exact words?

Unfortunately...

A simple question like that... One without any memorable context... Was nearly impossible to connect to a specific memory.

"Damn it... This is impossible. Couldn't there be a clearer conversation? Or an actual scene?"

The still-conscious Dawn couldn't help complaining.

A vague question like that...

Could hardly be compared against his existing memories to determine whether anything had been altered.

Shaking his head...

He gave up expecting anything meaningful from tonight's dream.

Then...

In the very next instant... A voice he had never heard before echoed through the darkness.

It was calm.

Ancient.

Its tone carried immeasurable distance.

"I am Merlin."

"Merlin Ambrosius."
