The beast's Silver aura suddenly compressed around its body, no longer flaring outward like before. Every strand of mana seemed to sink beneath its skin, gathering around the blood that still remained inside its body. Kael felt the change through the connection and tightened his grip around his sword as the pull of Dead End continued dragging the creature toward him.
The beast resisted.
Its claws carved deeper into the stone.
Kael took another step.
The distance between them shortened.
The beast's remaining arm trembled under the pressure, but its eyes remained fixed on Kael. There was no panic in them anymore.
Then the blood beneath its skin moved.
Kael felt it before he saw it.
The blood that had been flowing through the beast suddenly reversed direction, surging violently through its veins as its Silver aura compressed even further. The connection between Kael and the creature shook.
Kael's expression hardened.
Something was interfering with Dead End.
The beast roared.
"Blood Reversal!"
BOOM!
The blood inside its body surged outward all at once.
The force didn't push Kael away.
Instead, the connection itself twisted.
For the first time since Kael had awakened the Mark, the pull of Dead End met something that wasn't simply resisting it.
It was being redirected.
Kael's sword trembled in his hand.
The blood coating the blade began shaking violently, the faint silver tint flickering as the connection strained between them.
Kael stepped forward and forced the pull harder.
The beast's body moved several inches.
Its claws tore through the stone.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
He could still pull it.
But the connection was becoming unstable.
The beast's Blood Reversal wasn't overpowering Dead End directly.
It was forcing the blood carrying the connection to move in the opposite direction.
Kael pushed harder.
The beast roared again.
Its body was dragged forward.
For one brief moment, Kael thought the connection would hold.
Then the blood around the beast exploded outward.
BOOM!
Kael was forced backward as the connection snapped.
The reinforced blood coating his blade scattered across the ground.
The beast was thrown in the opposite direction, its body crashing through several broken stones before rolling to a stop.
Kael immediately steadied himself.
His breathing was heavy.
His sword remained in his hand.
Across the clearing, the beast slowly pushed itself upright.
Blood poured from its wounds.
The technique had clearly taken something from it.
Its Silver aura flickered violently, and the wound across its chest had opened even further from the strain. Yet it was still standing.
Kael stared at it.
The beast stared back.
Neither moved.
Then the creature suddenly vanished into the darkness.
Kael's eyes followed the movement.
His mana sensing caught the direction, but his body didn't move immediately.
The beast wasn't attacking.
It was running.
Kael took one step forward.
Then stopped.
His entire body was exhausted.
The wounds from the Blood Bullet were still healing, his muscles were trembling from the repeated exchanges, and his breathing had become increasingly difficult to control.
The beast disappeared deeper into the forest.
Kael lowered his sword.
For several seconds, he simply stood there.
The Mark was still pulsing.
But the connection was gone.
Kael slowly looked down at the black crescent on his palm.
He had felt it.
The exact moment the connection had been torn apart.
Dead End had failed.
Not because the beast had escaped its range.
Not because Kael had lost control.
The beast had broken the connection itself.
Kael's fingers tightened slightly.
He looked toward the direction the creature had disappeared.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"So that's possible."
He didn't sound angry.
He simply stared into the darkness.
The Mark had always felt absolute.
Once Kael established the connection, blood became a chain that his opponents struggled to escape.
But this beast had just shown him something different.
A chain could be broken.
Kael slowly sheathed his sword.
The forest became silent again.
Somewhere beyond the trees, the wounded beast continued fleeing.
Kael didn't chase.
Not tonight.
His body needed time to recover, and the beast was already carrying enough wounds to remind him that the battle had not been a victory for either side.
Kael turned away from the darkness.
Then the black crescent pulsed once more.
His steps stopped.
He looked back.
For a moment, he could feel something faint.
Not the connection.
Not the blood.
Something weaker.
Something that had remained after the connection broke.
Kael narrowed his eyes.
Then the sensation disappeared.
He stood silently for another second before continuing forward.
He didn't know where the beast had gone.
But now he knew one thing for certain.
The Mark was powerful.
It was dangerous.
But it wasn't infallible.
