Kael's eyes followed the sword as it disappeared into the undergrowth.
His stomach tightened.
Unarmed.
Against a beast that had already survived everything he had thrown at it.
The creature took another step.
Blood still trickled from its shoulder, but the wound wasn't deep enough to stop it.
If anything...
It looked angrier.
Kael slowly backed away, never taking his eyes off it.
His mind raced.
A sword wasn't enough...
So what now?
The beast suddenly lunged.
Kael dove aside.
Its claws tore through the spot where he'd been standing, ripping up earth and roots.
He grabbed the nearest thing within reach—
A fallen branch.
He swung it instinctively.
CRACK!
The branch shattered against the beast's head.
It didn't even blink.
"...Right."
Kael tossed the broken stick aside and ran.
The beast thundered after him.
Branches whipped against his face as he forced his exhausted legs forward.
His ribs screamed with every breath.
His back burned where the claws had grazed him.
Still...
He didn't stop.
Ahead, the ground sloped sharply downward.
Loose rocks covered the hillside.
Kael slid down the incline, barely keeping his balance.
The beast followed without hesitation.
Halfway down—
Its injured foreleg landed on a loose stone.
For the first time...
It slipped.
Only for an instant.
But Kael saw it.
His eyes narrowed.
The leg...
That injury was affecting its footing on uneven ground.
The beast regained its balance almost immediately and roared before charging again.
Kael reached the bottom of the slope and ducked behind a thick oak.
The beast smashed straight through it.
Wood exploded in every direction.
Kael threw himself clear just before the trunk collapsed.
His chest heaved.
This wasn't a fight anymore.
It was survival.
The beast stalked toward him again.
Its breathing had become heavier.
Its injured foreleg carried just a little less weight than the other three.
A tiny weakness.
One that didn't matter in an open fight.
But maybe...
Just maybe...
It could matter somewhere else.
Kael glanced around.
Towering rocks.
Narrow gaps between trees.
Steep ground.
An idea began to form.
It wasn't a good plan.
It was the only one he had.
The beast roared and charged once more.
This time...
Kael ran toward the roughest part of the forest instead of away from it.
