The three Shadow Wolves remained motionless.
Their emerald eyes studied the two hunters.
The forest fell silent.
Even the wind seemed to have stopped.
Leon never took his eyes off the wolves.
"First time hunting a Bronze beast?"
Kael nodded.
Leon smiled faintly.
"Then here's some advice."
"Every Bronze beast has at least one mastered technique."
"Never assume it'll fight like an Iron beast."
"Expect the unexpected."
Kael tightened his grip on his sword.
"Understood."
The wolf standing between them took a step backward.
Then another.
It slipped beneath the shade of the towering trees.
Its black fur merged with the darkness.
A moment later...
It was gone.
Kael frowned.
"It disappeared."
Leon's expression hardened.
"Silent Veil."
"The Shadow Wolf's technique."
"Don't waste time looking for it."
"It'll reveal itself when it attacks."
The remaining two wolves lowered their bodies.
Their muscles tensed.
Then—
They exploded forward.
Kael met the first wolf head-on.
Clang!
Its claws scraped against his sword, forcing him back a step.
The beast didn't hesitate.
It lunged again.
Kael sidestepped.
His blade flashed.
Shhk!
Ripple Slash.
The first strike carved across the wolf's shoulder.
The returning slash raced toward its neck.
The wolf twisted away just in time.
A shallow cut opened beneath its jaw.
At the same time...
Leon drove his spear toward the second wolf.
The beast leaped aside.
Before it landed...
Leon spun his spear and swept low.
Thud!
The shaft slammed into the wolf's foreleg, forcing it to stumble.
Neither hunter gained an advantage.
The wolves were fast.
Too fast.
Then...
A chill ran down Kael's spine.
Without thinking...
He threw himself backward.
Slash!
A pair of claws tore through the air where he had been standing.
The third wolf had emerged from the shadows.
Its attack had missed.
It didn't chase.
Instead...
It immediately retreated.
One step.
Two.
Its body disappeared beneath the trees once more.
"Don't follow it!" Leon shouted.
As if on cue...
The wolf fighting Kael leaped backward.
It too retreated into the shadows.
Its outline vanished.
Before Kael could react—
Another Shadow Wolf burst out from a different patch of darkness.
It had already taken its companion's place.
"They switched..."
Kael muttered.
Leon deflected another claw with the shaft of his spear.
"That's how they hunt."
"One attacks."
"One disappears."
"And one waits."
"They keep rotating until their prey makes a mistake."
Another growl echoed through the forest.
The shadows stirred once more.
The hunt had only just begun.
