"Awoooooo—!"
The mournful howl echoed through the forest.
Another answered.
Then another.
The trees came alive.
Leaves rustled.
Branches shook.
Dark figures darted between the shadows.
Leon's face hardened.
"Run!"
Neither of them hesitated.
They burst through the forest at full speed.
The Peak Bronze Shadow Wolf didn't chase.
It walked.
Step.
Step.
Step.
Yet...
No matter how fast they ran...
The pressure behind them never faded.
Kael glanced over his shoulder.
His heart skipped a beat.
"It's following."
"I know."
Another howl echoed.
This one...
From their left.
Leon immediately changed direction.
Before they had gone twenty meters—
A Shadow Wolf burst from the bushes.
Its claws shot toward Kael.
"Ripple Slash!"
Clang!
The first slash knocked the claws aside.
The second carved across the wolf's flank.
It rolled away with a pained growl.
Kael didn't stop.
He kept running.
"Don't waste time finishing it!" Leon shouted.
"I'm not!"
The forest grew louder.
Growls.
Howls.
Footsteps.
They were everywhere.
Another wolf leaped from a fallen tree.
Leon met it head-on.
"Flash Pierce."
Boom!
His spear became a silver streak.
Thrust!
The wolf was blasted off its feet, crashing through a cluster of bushes.
"Move!"
They sprinted past before it could recover.
Minutes passed.
Neither dared slow down.
Kael's breathing grew heavier.
His legs burned.
Then...
He looked back.
The three Shadow Wolf corpses were long gone.
Left behind.
"So... we're really leaving them."
Leon didn't look back.
"We don't have a choice."
"They're worth coins."
"They are."
A brief silence followed.
Then Leon spoke.
"A dead hunter earns nothing."
"Live first."
"Hunt again tomorrow."
Kael clenched his jaw.
His first Bronze hunt...
And he couldn't even bring back the proof of it.
Another howl split the air.
Closer.
Much closer.
Leon suddenly stopped.
Kael nearly crashed into him.
"What is it?"
Leon slowly turned.
His expression darkened.
Ahead...
A pair of emerald eyes appeared between the trees.
Then another.
And another.
More Shadow Wolves stepped into view.
Behind them...
Another howl answered.
Leon looked left.
More wolves.
Right.
More wolves.
His grip tightened around his spear.
"...We've been running where it wants."
