The clash of the two kings echoed through the forest.
BOOM!
Another shockwave rolled through the trees.
Neither Kael nor Leon looked back.
They kept running.
Branches whipped across their faces.
Roots caught at their boots.
Every breath burned their lungs.
Only after several minutes did the thunderous impacts begin to fade.
Leon suddenly stumbled.
His legs gave out.
Thud.
He caught himself with his spear before collapsing completely.
Kael stopped.
"...Leon."
"I'm fine."
The words came out strained.
Leon tried to stand.
His legs refused.
A bitter smile appeared on his face.
"Looks like Overdrive finally collected its debt."
Kael walked over without saying a word.
He pulled Leon's arm over his shoulder.
Leon glanced sideways.
"You sure your side can handle this?"
Kael adjusted his grip.
"It has to."
The two continued forward.
Much slower this time.
The forest gradually changed.
The ancient trees became smaller.
The oppressive aura hanging in the air slowly disappeared.
Neither of them spoke.
There wasn't any strength left for conversation.
A flock of birds suddenly burst into the sky somewhere behind them.
Both hunters froze.
Leon tightened his grip on his spear.
Kael slowly drew his sword.
The forest became quiet again.
A few seconds passed.
Then a minute.
Nothing came.
Leon exhaled.
"...Keep moving."
They continued on.
By the time the sun began to sink behind the trees, the dense forest had started to thin.
Fresh air replaced the suffocating pressure of the inner forest.
Kael looked ahead.
Through the trees...
The familiar dirt road came into view.
He stopped for a brief moment.
They had made it out.
Leon stepped onto the road first.
His shoulders finally relaxed.
"...We're alive."
Kael looked back at the forest one last time.
The place where the Alpha...
And the Ironhide Behemoth...
Were still settling their battle.
He tightened his grip around his sword.
Then turned away.
Without another word...
The two hunters began the long walk back to the guild.
