Neither Kael nor the Razor Fox moved.
The forest had become eerily quiet.
The fox's golden eyes never left him.
Its breathing had grown heavier from the prolonged fight.
The wound on its flank continued to bleed.
Yet...
It still stood with absolute confidence.
It believed Kael still couldn't catch it.
The Razor Fox lowered its body.
Its muscles tightened.
Then—
Mirage Step.
It burst forward.
Straight toward Kael.
Kael didn't raise his sword.
His eyes remained fixed on the fox's feet.
Closer.
Closer.
Its front paw pressed into the earth.
Its shoulder dipped.
The weight shifted.
"There..."
Instead of reacting to the fox...
Kael reacted to its balance.
His body moved first.
One smooth step.
The fox changed direction exactly as before.
But this time...
Kael wasn't there.
Its claws cut through empty air.
The fox's pupils shrank.
For the first time...
It had failed to deceive him.
The beast twisted instantly.
Its tail lashed toward Kael's head.
Kael leaned back.
The blade-like tail missed by a hair.
The fox followed with its fangs.
Kael pivoted.
Its jaws snapped shut inches from his shoulder.
It refused to stop.
Claws.
Tail.
Fangs.
Every attack flowed into the next.
Every movement was connected.
There wasn't a single wasted step.
Kael retreated just enough to avoid each strike.
His movements were still rough.
Still incomplete.
But they were no longer desperate.
The Razor Fox leapt onto a tree trunk.
It sprinted along the bark before kicking off toward another tree.
Then another.
Then another.
Each leap changed its attack angle.
Its body seemed to split across the forest.
Not because there were copies...
But because Kael's eyes kept arriving a fraction too late.
The fox dropped from above.
Kael didn't look up.
He watched the shadow.
Then...
The weight.
His foot shifted.
His body glided sideways.
The fox crashed into the ground where he had been standing.
Dust exploded into the air.
It immediately rolled and lunged again.
Kael's body responded almost naturally now.
One step.
Turn.
Shift.
Glide.
The fox never stopped attacking.
Kael never stopped learning.
Minutes passed.
Neither noticed the passing time.
Finally...
The Razor Fox created distance.
Its chest rose and fell.
Its golden eyes held something they hadn't before.
Wariness.
It wasn't fighting the same human anymore.
Kael slowly exhaled.
He looked down at his feet.
"...Not enough."
"I still waste too much movement."
He lifted his head.
"But I'm closer."
The Razor Fox growled softly.
It understood.
If this fight continued...
The human would only become harder to kill.
For the first time in its life...
The predator considered retreat.
Kael tightened his grip on his sword.
He didn't chase.
He simply waited.
If the fox attacked again...
He would learn again.
