“Shut up, baldy,” Menchi yells angrily at Hanzo. “If you can’t make the cut... too bad, quit! You are not good enough! Quit, you hear me?! Quit!!”
Led by Killua, Leorio, Kurapika, and Gon, the other examinees quickly rush to their stations to prepare their dishes.
This isn’t good... if those four pass...
However, by sheer coincidence, Menchi fails all four of them, despite their sushi looking quite good to Auren’s eye. Angrily, she fails every other examinee, her face full of rage.
“No!”
“Forget it!”
“Disgusting, it’s soggy!”
“Wrong shape!”
“It’s warm, disgusting, your body heat transferred into it, I’m puking!”
Finally, after trying almost fifty pieces, Menchi takes a big gulp of her tea, which she prepared earlier. “That’s it... none of you passed. I guess... in theory, three passed,” she quickly adds.
“Are you sure?” Buhara asks.
“Yes!” Menchi replies. “Just because you can’t do your job properly doesn’t mean I have to throw aside my pride as a Gourmet Hunter.”
Even Satotz, who was spectating from the top of a tree, approaches her.
“Examiner... Menchi,” he mutters. “I believe there are quite a few talented examinees present... it would be a shame if you would fai—”
“Shut up!” Menchi yells. “Who asked you? Go back into your tree, you weirdo! They all fail!”
She then glances at Auren, Vanessa, and Neffi. “Well... aside from those three, of course. See, it was possible to pass... you simply aren’t talented enough.”
Drawing his katana, Auren slowly approaches Hisoka.
To his surprise, Hisoka stares directly at him, showing no emotion, neither surprise nor fear.
“No desperate struggle... no pleading?” Auren asks.
“None,” Hisoka replies. “It was... a fun exam ❤️. Despite everything, I’ve enjoyed myself... ❤️.”
Too bad... he hasn’t learned his lesson yet.
It looks like what I’m doing is bound to fail... I’ve misjudged him.
He does not fear death... he welcomes it.
“Well... perhaps it will last a little while longer after all,” Auren says with a grin, sheathing his katana.
“What do you mean, huh?” Menchi screams, this time at Auren.
“You might want to... inform the Association first,” Auren says. “Just to make sure... you won’t get into trouble.”
“Fine!” Menchi yells, taking out a phone and dialing a number, before the call finally connects.
“It’s you, Beans... my exam is over... yeah, nobody except the three armed soldiers passed... yes, I am serious. No, I won’t change my mind! What do you mean I didn’t adhere to the established criteria? How so? It was established that I’d judge by taste! My taste! Look, the hints don’t matter... one examinee leaked the dish, and everyone knew and delivered garbage to me!”
“NO!” she yells. “I won’t redo the test. I’ve decided. The second phase is over!” She then ends the call, looking a tad worried, while her face is still flushed red with anger.
Suddenly, number 255 destroys a cooking station. “I’m here to become a Blacklist Hunter. I want a real test, not this Gourmet Hunter shitshow! I want to become a real Hunter... not someone like... this!”
“Someone like this... huh?” Menchi says, standing up. “Sorry to hear that... that someone like this failed you. Better luck next year, huh?”
“Don’t mess with me!” the man yells, trying to punch her, only for Buhara to suddenly appear in front of him and slap him away, causing him to fly off into the distance, crashing through a window on the second floor of the small warehouse and landing outside.
“That was uncalled for...” Menchi says, revealing two large cooking knives as she begins to juggle.
As she explains her reasoning, Auren, Vanessa, and Neffi already walk outside and sit under a tree, spectating from afar.
“Doesn’t matter what kind of Hunter you aim to be... you’ve gotta be proficient in Martial Arts!” they hear Menchi yell loudly.
Continuing, still angry, Menchi’s voice is loud even from the outside. “Rare foods are often obtainable only in remote, inhospitable places, and we are frequently called on to run down and capture poachers as well.”
“Will she catch us as well?” Neffi jokes with a sly grin. “We are the worst kind of poachers.”
“She can try... and she’s the one who’d become our prey,” Vanessa declares.
Finally, as she keeps rambling, Auren sees an airship approaching from the direction of Zaban City, which is not that far away. Recognizing the familiar Association airship, Netero’s voice echoes through the speakers. “Even so... isn’t failing almost all the applicants a bit abrupt?”
Suddenly, Netero, still wearing his wooden geta, appears in the sky, casually dropping onto the ground, unharmed, leaving behind a small crater where he landed as his shoes bury themselves into the ground. He then casually walks forward as if nothing happened.
“Ouch!” Vanessa screeches, her face twisting in shock. “Those damn wooden shoes would have destroyed anyone’s feet... even my own! Damn, my ankle hurts just from looking. How can he land with them?”
“That old man is quite skilled... as the Association President, he should be,” Neffi points out.
“Hey... he’s staring at her chest!” Vanessa points out as Netero talks to Menchi, his face serious.
“He might look serious... but he’s just a lecher!” She adds.
“It’s partially her own fault,” Neffi counters. “With those clothes....”
“You two... is that the important thing?” Auren wonders.
I guess it doesn’t matter what kind of girl... they all care about clothes and appearance... and love to secretly badmouth each other.
Finally, the conversation between those two ends. “I’ll resign my post and withdraw my decision,” Menchi says, looking solemn.
“Hmm, to continue the present test would compromise the results of the exam. Instead, I’d like you... to stay on as examiner. However, you will participate in the new test yourself, to set an example for these examinees. How does that sound?”
“In other words, they’ll know they have a shot... although... I guess since technically three examinees passed... it’s not up to me to make such a decision,” Netero mutters.
Suddenly, everyone stares at Auren, Vanessa, and Neffi, who are sitting under the tree in the distance.
“He’s asking us?” Vanessa asks. “That’s stupid.”
“I guess so...” Neffi replies. “Since we’re fake examinees.”
“Let’s go...” Auren mutters, walking up to Netero, Menchi, and the examinees, all staring at them.
“Hoho, what do you three mighty soldiers say?” Netero asks.
“Since a few people really looked forward to this exam and desperately want to pass... why would we disagree?” Auren asks, shrugging his shoulders.
“What?!”
“They could pass... what are they doing?”
“Really, we can still try?”
“Thank you!”
“You saved us... again! You guys are the best!”
The examinees yell in excitement, some staring at them with genuine gratitude.
“Alright...” Menchi says, now deep in thought. “How about... we try cooking boiled eggs?”
“Chairman... may we get a lift to Split Mountain? It’s close by, and it would be a perfect task for the 77... no, 74 examinees, since three passed; they don’t have to take my second task.”
Auren watches in amazement as all remaining examinees, including the examiners, Satotz, Buhara, Menchi, and, of course, Netero, enter the airship, the huge crowd of people disappearing in a matter of minutes.
Just a ten-minute flight later, after most examinees had been standing close to the entrance, the airship lands on a large mountain, split in the middle, revealing a fearsome ravine hundreds of meters deep, with a vast and fast-flowing river underneath.
The examinees carefully exit and stare down into the ravine in shock.
“This is one of the deepest ravines in these parts. There’s a fast river at the bottom. Watch!” Menchi explains before suddenly jumping downwards.
Auren sees her hang on to some kind of web; many clusters of eggs are also visible.
“The Spider Eagle lives here... she’s intending to steal an egg,” Netero explains to the candidates.
She then collects an egg and calmly climbs back up the ravine, the rocks offering plenty of footholds and allowing her to climb it in just a minute or so.
Multiple examinees, slightly more than half, immediately jump downwards, mimicking Menchi.
Even Neffi, for some reason, jumps down, diving so fast with her glidesuit that she surpasses the other examinees.
Then, with a skilled movement, she takes an entire cluster of eggs before darting back upwards.
Using the stronger updrafts caused by the ravine, Neffi is back on top of the mountain within just a few seconds, her entire move just one single sharp dive and a swift ascent.
In shock, the examinees hanging on the web, the ones who didn’t dare jump down, and even Menchi, Buhara, Satotz, and Netero stare at her.
“I want to try them too!” she explains, feeling self-aware. “Also, I brought enough to share... you can have one as well if you ask me nicely.”
“Gladly, young Hu— girl,” Netero says, almost slipping up and revealing Neffi’s identity.
As the examinees ascend the ravine, carefully yet speedily climbing back up, not a single one of those who jumped down fails and falls into the ravine. Menchi cooks the eggs, along with some simple chicken eggs for comparison.
Auren, meanwhile, grabs the well-hidden egg from his back and holds it in his arms, gently caressing it with his gloves, gently inserting Aura into it.
Don’t worry... a precious egg like you won’t be eaten... you’ll become a good friend... right?
Feeling a slight twitch, Auren perks up, only for the egg to return to complete stillness again, showing no sign of life.
Well... that was something at least.
Hiding the egg again and trying a spider-eagle egg himself, Auren is pleasantly surprised by the taste.
Not bad... though I prefer the rice; I don’t need much else.
“It’s delicious!” Hanzo yells.
“It melts in your mouth, regular eggs are rubber balls by comparison!” another points out, clearly enjoying the egg.
“It’s not bad,” Vanessa says, munching on a couple of eggs, with Neffi steadily supplying more eggs for her while eating one herself. Finally, she also brings one egg to the examiners.
“Hey! That’s bribery!” Leorio yells, pointing at her. “Cheating!”
“You... they could have passed on their own, don’t humiliate yourself, Leorio!” Kurapika immediately scolds him, looking embarrassed just being associated with him.
“Second exam... second phase... 47 examinees pass!” Menchi declares loudly.
