Chapter 224: Chapter 92: Spirit Ginseng (Part 2)
Fang Rui pondered for a long time before coming to a decision: No.
He wanted Mrs. Xue of the Fang Family, Third Lady, Fang Ling, and Nannan to live long lives, but he didn’t want them to change into people he no longer recognized.
’This is just a hypothetical. Maybe there will be a better way in the future.’
Fang Rui reassured himself, but he knew in his heart that it was highly unlikely.
After all, the nobility in this world didn’t live much longer than commoners, which showed just how rare methods of extending life were.
’Aside from me, does true immortality even exist in this world?’
Fang Rui looked out the carriage window.
Just then, the night wind howled, pushing dark clouds across the bright moon. The world outside turned pitch-black—so dark you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face.
"This night... perhaps it’s just like the Great Yu..."
Fang Rui murmured, pulling his gaze back inside. He looked down at the Spirit Jade Ginseng in his lap. After a moment’s thought, a surge of True Qi shattered it to dust.
Yes, the Spirit Jade Ginseng, a priceless treasure in the eyes of others, had just been destroyed by him as if it were utterly worthless.
Any other Martial Artist who witnessed this would have been heartbroken, cursing him for such a wanton waste of a heavenly treasure.
But Fang Rui felt not a shred of regret.
’Granted, even if I didn’t use the Spirit Jade Ginseng, I could have traded it. But...’
Fang Rui shook his head.
He had his suspicions about the Spirit Jade Ginseng’s origin, and the thought of it was repulsive.
Besides, trying to trade it would attract suspicion and attention. For someone like Fang Rui, who just wanted to keep a low profile, it was a needless complication.
"Huh?!"
Fang Rui gasped in surprise.
He could sense that after he shattered the Spirit Jade Ginseng, the amount of Extraordinary Factor in the air had suddenly increased. However, it was mixed with a gloomy and malevolent aura.
’Spirit Jade Ginseng, Spirit Medicine, eating people... When did the Spirit Master profession take such a creepy turn?’
Fang Rui’s heart sank. He didn’t absorb any of this Extraordinary Factor. With a sweep of his sleeve, he used his True Qi to drive away and completely purge the Factor tainted with that ominous aura.
’No, that’s not right. Sun Shouchai, the Spirit Master from the Divine Capture Bureau, definitely gave off a sinister vibe. But on the other hand, Daoist Ge felt as natural and refreshing as a spring breeze.’
’Perhaps not all Spirit Masters are the same.’
Fang Rui mused as the carriage swayed and rocked on its way back to the Fang Mansion.
...
Back at the Fang Mansion.
Mrs. Xue of the Fang Family, Third Lady, Fang Ling, and Nannan were all still awake, waiting along with all the maids.
When they saw Fang Rui return, the two little girls, Fang Ling and Nannan, came bouncing over. They looked him up and down, craning their necks curiously.
"Brother, you’re finally baaaack!" Fang Ling drew out the last word.
"Yep! Yep! We waited for a super long time! Mom said you went to a feast, Brother Ah Rui," Nannan said in her tiny voice.
"Did you bring us any presents?" Fang Ling hopped in place.
"Presents! Presents!" Nannan nodded her little head.
The Fang Family’s fortunes had improved greatly, and they no longer lacked for food or trinkets, yet the two little girls still acted this way.
It was a habit they had formed during their long journey that year.
Their journey from the Three Southern States to Wuzhou had been incredibly difficult. But every time Fang Rui returned from an outing, he would always bring back something good—sometimes food, other times a fun trinket. For the two little girls, Fang Ling and Nannan, his return was the moment they looked forward to most during those hard times.
"You two are a clever pair!"
Fang Rui chuckled, taking the Brocade Bag from his waist and tipping out two Jade Plums.
He had destroyed the Spirit Jade Ginseng and hadn’t brought it back, but an Exotic Fruit like the Jade Plum, which had been vetted by both himself and Ge Changgeng, was perfectly safe.
The two Jade Plums looked like they were carved from icy crystal. In the dim, hazy light, they glowed with a faint, cyan-colored halo, looking truly extraordinary.
"Whoa! Wow! Brother, it’s glowing! It’s so pretty!" Fang Ling clasped her hands together in front of her chest, leaning forward slightly. Her eyes went wide and she puffed out her cheeks like a pufferfish.
"So pretty! So pretty!" Nannan chirped in her tiny voice.
It wasn’t just Fang Ling and Nannan; even the maids gasped in amazement.
Only Mrs. Xue of the Fang Family and Third Lady remained composed. One felt it was improper for someone of her status to make a fuss, while the other was worldly and experienced. Though their eyes betrayed their surprise, they didn’t let it show on their faces.
"They don’t just look pretty, they’re delicious, too!"
Fang Rui patted the two little girls on the head and handed a Jade Plum to each of them. "Go on, try it!"
CRUNCH!
Fang Ling took a bite and froze as if petrified. She stood motionless for a few breaths before suddenly hopping up. "Brother, it’s sweet and sour! It’s so good!"
As if feeling the word "good" wasn’t nearly enough to describe the Jade Plum’s flavor, she quickly added, "It’s the best fruit ever! It’s even better than meat!"
"Mmm-hmm!" Nannan’s big eyes curved into crescent moons as she nodded her head like a little chick pecking at grain.
"Mom, you try some too!"
After taking a bite, Fang Ling and Nannan seemed to remember something. They turned their heads, looked back, and then rushed over to offer their half-eaten Jade Plums to Mrs. Xue of the Fang Family and Third Lady.
The maids watched from the side, sniffing the faint, fruity fragrance in the air and swallowing nervously. They wondered what such a beautiful fruit could possibly taste like.
"Brother Rui, is this a Jade Plum?!"
Third Lady knew Fang Rui had attended the Jade Plum Association’s event, so the fruit’s identity came to mind. "Out in the world, a single Jade Plum can go for over a hundred liang of silver, and they’re impossible to get!"
She had heard of them and had even tried to acquire some recently, but to no avail. Otherwise, she would have brought some home long ago.
"Over a hundred liang of silver for a single fruit? This..."
Mrs. Xue of the Fang Family looked at the fruit before her, now covered in Fang Ling’s saliva, and her eyebrow twitched.
