Chapter 243: Chapter 98: Immortal Hero 2
’What’s so funny? Such unprofessional acting. See? I’m not even laughing.’
Fang Rui glanced at Li Dadan, feeling utterly mortified. ’If Bajin had already arrived, why would I be stuck using this oaf?!’
Zheng Jingkai’s face turned livid with rage, his brow twitching. He looked as if to say, ’Are you messing with me?’
He knew his own family’s dogs, didn’t he? ’Deeply realized their crimes and had an attack of conscience?’ Who were they trying to kid?
And even if that weren’t ridiculous enough, how the hell could one castrate himself *after* severing the tendons in his own hands and feet? Chew them off with his teeth? This was just too much!
"Er, the order of events might be a bit mixed up, but you get the general idea..." Li Dadan finally caught on and hurriedly tried to salvage the situation.
"Enough."
Fang Rui couldn’t bear to watch any longer. "Zheng Jinzhang, please, calm yourself. This is all due to my failure to discipline my men. I will be sure to teach them a harsh lesson afterward."
"Right, do you still wish to take these two with you?"
As he spoke, he kicked Li Dadan. "What are you gaping at? Have you got no sense? Hurry up and get these two packed up for Zheng Jinzhang!"
"Huh? Oh, right!"
Li Dadan silently marveled, ’The Chief is brilliant. Kills the body and crushes the spirit.’ He was about to move quickly.
"That won’t be necessary!"
Zheng Jingkai snorted coldly, stood up, and tossed a parting shot over his shoulder, "Fang Yinzheng, get your subordinates under control." Then he strode away without a backward glance.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to do more. But even though his rank was higher than Fang Rui’s, Fang Rui was not his subordinate. He had no authority over him, and even less over Li Dadan.
Besides, the matter of abducting the Qualified could not be discussed openly. He had no choice but to swallow this bitter pill in silence.
After Zheng Jingkai had left, Chu Xingyun clapped Fang Rui on the shoulder and chuckled. "You went a bit overboard this time. Still, they’re just a couple of pawns. It’s no big deal."
"And to be honest, it was immensely satisfying... HAHAHAHA!"
Clearly, he and Zheng Jingkai didn’t get along, so he was happy to watch the man make a fool of himself.
"Just pawns..."
Fang Rui murmured, a sense of helplessness welling up inside him.
Even though he now knew the Zheng Family and the Divine Capture Bureau were behind the kidnapping of infants and children, could he really wipe out the Zheng Family? Could he make a move against the Divine Capture Bureau?
No, he couldn’t.
If he really dared to wipe out the Zheng Family or move against the Divine Capture Bureau, such a major incident would certainly alert the State City. They would dispatch an Upper Grade Spirit Master to investigate.
But not all Upper Grade Spirit Masters were the same. Who knew what abilities an Upper Grade Spirit Master at the very peak of their Realm—one who could rival a First Grade Martial Artist—might possess?
What if his True Essence as a Second Grade Martial Artist wasn’t enough to conceal himself, and they tracked him down? What then?
’Besides, it’s not like Huaiyin Prefecture is an isolated case. All across the Great Yu, the upper-echelon Martial Artists are devouring people. Can I possibly kill them all?’ Fang Rui sighed internally.
Seeing Fang Rui’s despondent look, Chu Xingyun assumed he was worried about retaliation from the Zheng Family and chuckled. "Relax. The Zheng Family wouldn’t dare bring this matter out into the open."
"Besides, the Zheng Family has their hands full these days. Why would they have time to cause trouble for you?"
The Zheng Family’s plotting against the Divine Capture Bureau, their secret cultivation of a Demigod Medicine, and the incident with the giant Burial Flower at Nanshan Garden had already drawn widespread ire. They’d be so busy with the cleanup that they wouldn’t have the energy to start anything else.
"Oh?"
Fang Rui immediately thought of the Nanshan Garden incident and vaguely guessed that the Zheng Family must have gotten themselves into some serious trouble.
’Oh well. I’ll find out when I go to Nanshan Garden at noon,’ he thought.
"Also, stop investigating the case of the missing infants and children. The waters run deep on this one... You’re a smart man, so I won’t say any more."
"Understood."
Fang Rui hesitated, wanting to probe indirectly and ask if there was any hope of finding the head maid Bai Shao’s younger brother, or Li Dadan’s son, Heiwa.
Before he could speak, Chu Xingyun understood. "So, Fang Yinzheng, you want to ask about the truth behind all this?"
"I know a few things, but I can’t talk about them. If you want to know, Fang Yinzheng, you’ll just have to work your way up the ladder. I’ve got high hopes for you!" He clapped Fang Rui on the shoulder.
’Actually, I probably know just as much as you do, if not more.’
Fang Rui thought to himself but put on a deeply encouraged expression to stop Chu Xingyun from any more wild speculation. He quickly changed the subject to Li Dadan’s situation, asking earnestly, "Chu Jinzhang, in your opinion, is there any chance that Li Dadan’s son, Heiwa, can still be found?"
"Well... this situation is unusual. I’d say that Chief Constable of yours is just plain unlucky."
Chu Xingyun’s expression turned regretful. "All I can say is... my condolences."
Fang Rui’s heart sank.
After seeing Chu Xingyun off, Fang Rui noted it was getting late. His men were reporting for duty, so he gathered his three Chief Constables. He told them about the operation at noon and let them decide amongst themselves who would go and who would stay behind.
A short time later, Li Dadan sought him out. "Chief, about the operation at the Zheng Family’s Nanshan Garden at noon... I want in!"
"Dadan, you..."
Fang Rui gave Li Dadan a long, hard look and didn’t agree right away. "Let me think it over. You should think it over, too. I asked around earlier... and from what Chu Jinzhang said, the chances of your son being alive are slim."
"Besides, Dadan, Heiwa isn’t your only family. You still have a wife, another child, and an elderly mother. Think carefully about them!"
He had ordered Li Dadan to kill those two dogs of the Zheng Family to give the man an outlet for his rage, but it seemed to have done little good.
"I understand, Chief," Li Dadan said, his voice raspy. A clear struggle was written on his face.
...
Late that morning, it was nearly time.
Fang Rui was preparing to depart.
But just then, he found that his three Chief Constables—Li Dadan, Xun Buhe, and Niu Bajin—still hadn’t decided who would go and who would stay.
