I Am The Greatest Femboy Mage

Chapter 50: The Reason For Danger.

"Now,"

Vale said once she was sure the both of them were out of earshot distance.

"Back to our conversation."

She turned to Reyes.

"Why am I even here? If you really wanted to tell them everything, you could have just done it before I could intervene."

"Because if I’d told them myself, it would’ve come out as an accusation,"

Reyes said, voice steadier now, the earlier heat still steady in his voice.

"You standing here saying it makes it common courtesy. Me saying it on my own just makes it a combat instructor unnecessarily panicking about kids he’s known for one day."

He glanced toward the five of them, something almost apologetic in it.

"I wanted them to hear it from the person actually making the decisions for them. Not from someone who just found out his class doubled as a pipeline for something he doesn’t fully understand yet."

Vale considered that for a moment, something in her expression easing slightly—not quite approval, but close enough to it.

"That’s fair," she said. "More restraint than I expected from you coming here."

"I’m capable of restraint. I’m choosing to use much of it right now."

Reyes crossed his arms again, though the anger had settled into something more like grim resolve.

"So, now that it’s just us. Tell them properly. Not the summary you gave yesterday. All of it, or as much of it as you’re willing to trust this room with."

Vale’s gaze swept the five of them—Elian, Milena, Rudra, Oizys, Darrow—each in turn, weighing something Elian couldn’t quite name.

"The Davidians,"

she said finally.

"That’s what the sigil that was found at the courier’s death belongs to. As I said, It’s an old name, older than the war, resurrected sometime in the last six months along with everything else."

She let that settle before continuing.

"I didn’t lead with it yesterday because a name alone tells you nothing useful, and I’d rather you learn to fight what’s in front of you than spend your nights afraid of a word."

"And now?" Oizys asked, quiet, intent.

"Now you have a name to attach to the danger, because pretending otherwise stopped being useful the moment they killed someone within a day’s ride of this school yesterday."

Vale’s voice didn’t waver, but something colder had settled into it.

"The courier was carrying routine correspondence to the capital three hours from here. It was nothing classified, nothing that should have gotten him killed."

A small pause, Vale letting a heavy exhale.

"Which means this wasn’t about the letter at all. It was a demonstration, they wanted it found."

"Found by who?" Milena said, sharp, already ahead of the rest of them.

"By anyone tracking the old history closely enough to recognize the sigil, which includes me and Callan here."

Vale’s eyes settled on her specifically.

"Which also, given your family’s research into that exact period, I’d guess includes you."

Milena’s jaw tightened, the bloodfang at her shoulder stirring uneasily at whatever tension had crept into her posture.

Milena didn’t answer right away, and the silence stretched long enough that Elian glanced sideways at her, catching the careful, controlled way she was holding her expression still.

"My family’s research is old history," she said finally, evenly. "Curse theory, not tracking some murderous cult. I don’t see the connection."

"Curse theory old enough to touch the same period the Davidian sigil comes from," Vale said, not unkindly, but not backing off either.

A small pause, as the both of them hesitated.

"I’m not accusing you of anything, Milena. I’m telling you that because there’s much more going on beneath the surface, a lot that you don’t understand yet."

Reyes gave shot her a glance. "Which you aren’t going to explain to her?"

Vale sighed.

"Even i don’t know enough about what her family is dealing with to explain the situation correctly."

"Let’s leave it at that then," Milena said, tight, and didn’t offer anything further.

Vale let it sit rather than push, her attention moving on to the rest of them.

"That’s the shape of it. The Davidians are active, they’re not being subtle about wanting us to know it, and the five of you are precisely the kind of unaligned variable Reyes and I were arguing about a moment ago."

She glanced toward him, something unspoken passing between them.

"I guess I’ll have to tell you the actual reason why they want you five specifically other than just ’being an unknown variable’."

Silence settled into the room as Vale studied them.

"Why do you think we call the Davidians’ a demonic cult?" She asked, her tone strangely instructive.

"Because they worship demons?" Rudra asked, his first words since the whole time they were waiting here.

"No, because they’re trying to summon a demon."

"What is that supposed to be mean." It was Oizys this time, visibly taken aback.

"It means," Vale said, voice full of conviction, "That the entire purpose of their cult is to summon a demon, resurrect, to be more exact. That’s been their one and only goal since the inception of the cult."

Elian blinked, his hold on his staff growing tighter.

"And why does that involve us five specifically?"

Vale took a breath, looking like she was about to say something that she was going to regret deeply.

"Because summoning something like what they’re after requires more than chanting and circles. It requires a specific kind of sacrifice—not blood for blood’s sake, but blood for power. Concentrated, unclaimed power that doesn’t have an anchor yet, offered up in a ritual precise enough that most scholars spent the last century convinced it was theoretically impossible to actually complete."

A pause.

"And I don’t mean that as a passing comment, the complexity of the spell required to summon said demon was literally predicted to be in the latter of ninth circle by an ancient court mage."

"You said unclaimed," Rudra repeated slowly, already working it through. "Meaning...?"

"Meaning power that doesn’t answer to a crown, a bloodline’s established magic, an institution’s control, or anything at all really. What they want is an independent power that they can hijack, I know it sounds abstract, but trust me when I say this, they’re good enough at this for the vagueness of the qualification to not hold them back."
