I Am Zeus

Chapter 369: Unlogged

The guard’s expressionless mask stayed fixed on them.

No weapons appeared. No obvious signs of activity flared up. But the pressure around the armored figure stayed high to signal that a local sentinel here had a greater base weight than any of them currently did. The silence dragged on long enough to become its own demand.

Zeus answered first.

"We don’t have the markers you’re looking for," he said. "We didn’t use a pathway. We were pulled."

The guard’s head tilted a little.

"Pulled." The word was unpleasant in their ears. "From where?"

"A lower universe," Athena said evenly. "One that was under active erasure."

This earned a longer pause. The pressure around the guard fluctuated once before they received the result of the second impossible internal check.

"Lower designs do not have extraction protocols that reach this layer," the guard said. "Unauthorized transit is corrected on detection. You should not be intact. You should not be coherent. You should not be standing in an unassigned radius."

Poseidon shifted his grip on the trident. "Yet here we are."

The guard’s eyes snapped toward him. The pressure between them thickened. Poseidon’s jaw flexed, but he did not raise the weapon. The point had already been made without a blow being exchanged: a direct contest would not go in their favor.

Sun Wukong gave a low whistle. "Friendly place. Has anyone ever told you your welcome speech needs work?"

The guard ignored him.

"State authorizing House," it repeated. "State Decree coverage. State any residual claim that would permit your continued existence in this zone."

"We can’t," Zeus said. "We don’t have those things."

Another pause. This one was longer.

Hades watched the exchange with flat green eyes, still half-distant, but present enough to track the power dynamic. Hermes had gone very still and Sun Wukong watched with a look that was a cross between curiosity and disinterest. Kratos hadn’t moved since the guard arrived. Loki’s expression remained mild, almost interested.

Athena took a half-step forward keeping her spear low. "You’re running out of protocol options. We are outside your available categories. That means the decision is no longer yours."

The guard did not deny it.

For a moment the armored figure simply stood there. The featureless mask gave nothing away, but the ambient weight around it kept shifting in small, restless increments. Whatever system it answered to had not prepared it for nine unlogged and entirely coherent beings from a concluded lower design appearing without transit record or House claim.

Finally it spoke again.

"You will be moved to secondary review. Higher authority will determine disposition. Resistance will be treated as contamination behavior and answered accordingly."

Poseidon’s mouth curled. "Disposition."

"It’s offering transport instead of correction," Athena said quietly. "That is currently the better outcome."

Zeus glanced across the group. He saw the same calculation reflected in different faces – dislike, pragmatism, restrained anger and the simple arithmetic of power. They could force a fight here. They would lose it. And losing it would teach them nothing about where they were or who had pulled them out in the first place.

"We go." Zeus said.

No one argued.

The guard raised one armored hand. The air in front of it split along a clean vertical line revealing a corridor of denser light and structured pressure that did not belong to the unfinished arrival zone. The pathway had edges. It had direction. It felt built rather than grown.

"Single file," the guard instructed. "Deviation from the transit line will be corrected."

They formed up without ceremony. Zeus took the lead position opposite the guard. Athena followed close behind, then Poseidon, Hades, Hermes, Odin, Sun Wukong, Kratos, and Loki at the rear. The formation was automatic, old battlefield habit reasserting itself even in a place that had never heard of their battlefields.

They stepped into the pathway.

The unfinished colorless expanse fell away behind them almost at the same time. The corridor’s interior was narrower than it first appeared, lined with slow moving currents of muted gold and grey which carried faint impressions of distant authority. The pressure climbed another degree. Every step cost slightly more effort than the last. Lightning under Zeus’s skin answered slower. The sea in Poseidon’s blood felt farther away. Even the residual green under Hades’s skin dimmed under the local density.

No one complained. Complaint would not reduce the weight.

After a time the corridor began to show side channels – other pathways branching off into deeper haze, some carrying brief silhouettes of distant traffic. None of those silhouettes slowed or turned towards them. Whatever larger system they had entered just continued its ordinary business without concern for nine refugees from a dead design.

Sun Wukong broke the quiet first. "Anyone else getting the feeling we were safer when the giant hands were trying to end the world?"

"No." Kratos said.

Loki’s soft laugh was almost inaudible. "Speak for yourself. I find bureaucracy more offensive than annihilation. Annihilation is honest."

Hades spoke without looking at either of them. "Honesty is not the priority. Information is. We need to know who runs the layer above this guard. And whether they were the ones who reached into our universe at the last moment."

Athena nodded once. "Agreed. We stay controlled. We answer only what is required. We learn the hierarchy before we challenge any part of it."

Zeus kept his eyes forward. The pathway was beginning to widen. The muted currents of light grew stronger and through the haze ahead the first solid structures became visible – vast vertical forms which might have been towers, bridges, or the outer walls of something too large to parse at this distance. The scale was immediately wrong for any architecture of their lost world. These things had been built by minds that did not think in mountains or skies.

The guard did not slow.

"Secondary review authority is ahead." it said. "You will remain in assigned positions until processing is complete. Further inquiry will be handled by higher function."

Poseidon muttered, "Higher function. They even make superiority sound like paperwork."

Zeus did not smile. His attention remained fixed on the growing structures and the increasing weight in the air. Somewhere beyond this escort and this secondary review there were beings who might know why nine specific names had been pulled out of a universe under sentence of erasure. Or there were beings who would decide that the simplest correction was still available.

The pathway opened into a wide platform of polished grey material that felt more like solidified law than stone. Other armored figures waited at measured intervals. None of them spoke. The pressure here was higher again, steady and impersonal.

Their escort stopped and turned its featureless mask toward the group one last time.

"You are transferred," it said. "Do not resist the next handoff."

Beyond the platform, deeper structures loomed, and with them the first true sense of a hierarchy vast enough to treat the end of an entire universe as a minor administrative event.

Zeus squared his shoulders and stepped forward first.

The others followed.
