I Am Zeus

Chapter 371: Tertiary Review

The new platform was darker than the last and a far less patient audience.

Figures in armor stood in a wide arc, their plates marked with denser, slower script. The weight in the air over the central dais was enough to make one’s steps intentionally heavy. These were not the same functionaries that had reviewed absences and anomalies. They knew what the nine represented, even before any discussion had taken place. All that remained was disposition.

Zeus and Athena were the first to sense the shift, closely followed by the rest of the group.

They were directed to pre-marked positions with little further elaboration. The lead figure on this tier observed them for a considerably lengthy period before speaking.

"Unlogged cluster," it intoned. "Prior tiers have failed to resolve origin pathway, authorizing claim or extraction source. You will answer tertiary inquiry. Incomplete response will accelerate your final referral."

The questioning that followed was notably tighter and less repetitive. They wanted a structured response, residual power signatures, evidence of contact from the House, any detail that might explain how nine coherent individuals could have survived a concluded lower design and arrived intact. Zeus was willing to give them what he could in good faith, and Athena was able to supplement that with clinical accuracy. The others remained largely uncommunicative.

It was not enough.

The lead figure and two others engaged in silent system traffic. The weight over the dais increased by a noticeable degree. Poseidon’s knuckles had gone white around the staff of his trident. Hades’ expression was unchanged. Odin, watching through his single eye, seemed to be reviewing the information for later reference. Kratos was as immovable as the rock from which he was named, and Hermes did not so much as twitch.

Sun Wukong endured the shift in attitude for longer than most would have expected.

He rolled one shoulder, tapping the staff against the platform before fixing the line of armored figures with an expression of open distaste.

"You lot keep shuffling us from one empty platform to the next like inspected crates," he said. "If you are going to bother with our time, at least be consistent about the purpose."

Loki’s response was delivered in a casual tone.

"Crates would be generous. Crates are inventoried. We are being paraded up this hill like pets that wandered into the wrong domain. I’m starting to become quite insulted by the repetition."

There was a noticeable shift in the temperature of the space.

Not heat, but something closer to authority.

The lead figure made no move to raise or lower a hand. It simply allowed a fraction more of its presence to be felt. The weight of the air over the dais compressed in a single, focused motion. Sun Wukong’s knees struck the platform with enough force to crack the surface beneath them, and the staff he had been holding was suddenly impossibly heavy, slipping free of his grip and tumbling away. Loki was knocked down beside him in turn, one hand braced against the floor, the pleasant neutrality of his expression scrubbed away by the sensation of being pinned there by the force of the figure’s will.

Neither had been given the opportunity to react.

The pressure held for three heartbeats, long enough to make the point, and then released entirely, returning to the level it had been at previously. Sun Wukong remained on one knee, steadying himself before rising, and Loki remained crouched, the amusement leeched from his features.

The lead figure’s featureless mask turned to take in the rest of the group, as if to determine if anyone else required the demonstration.

"Commentary is not required," it said. "Position is not negotiable. You are unlogged material under review. You will treat the process as such."

Zeus did not move, the slow build of lightning in his veins forced into stillness by the overall density of the space. He regarded the mask, face unreadable, but calculation had sharpened in his gaze. Even mid-tier functionaries had enough presence to pin down two of his most powerful enforcers with little visible effort. The possibility was no longer theoretical.

Athena’s voice did not waver. "Understood. Continue the inquiry."

The discussion resumed as if nothing had happened, aside from the very small correction of posture. Further details were requested and, overwhelmingly, not provided. The tertiary officials did not show the same signs of confusion that the lower tiers had. They showed consideration, examination. Various theories were presented and discarded in turn, residual contamination, higher interference, incomplete erasure. None held sufficient structure to be considered.

Poseidon watched Sun Wukong stand and muttered, "We are going to run out of platforms before they run out of authority."

"That is the point," Odin said, almost to himself. "Each level confirms that the issue is not theirs."

Hades, at last, chose to speak. "Then eventually we reach someone that decides problems of this nature are solved by removal."

No one argued the point.

The lead figure concluded the discussion in much the same tone as the ones before.

"Tertiary capacity is exceeded. Origin remains unresolved. Extraction source remains unresolved. No authorizing framework is present. You will be elevated to discretionary authority for final determination."

Loki dabbed at the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand and allowed himself a thin smile that did not touch his eyes. "Discretionary. How exciting."

Sun Wukong retrieved his staff in silence. The anger was still there, but it had been compressed into something colder and sharper. He no longer looked insulted, only like a man settling a debt. New pathways had opened along the far side of the platform. These were different, broader, darker and marked with script that moved with deliberate speed. The weight of presence coming off of them was noticeably greater than anything the nine had seen so far. Whatever waited at the far end did not deal with anomalies as a matter of course.

The lead figure raised an armored hand.

"Transfer is mandatory. Maintain formation. Further displays will be answered with permanent correction."

Zeus cast a single glance over the group. Maintain. Observe. Do not test the boundary again until they understood who waited on the other side. The others fell in without question, even Sun Wukong and Loki, though the way they held their shoulders made it clear the lesson had been taken in. They stepped into the new, darker pathway under the watchful eyes of the tertiary officials.

Behind them the platform and its occupants were left behind. Ahead, the corridor stretched away into a threshold that no longer seemed administrative. The weight in the air remained, and with it the certainty that the next handoff would not be to another filter. It would be to someone who could decide if unlogged survivors from a dead lower universe would be retained, utilized or removed.

Zeus kept walking.

The others followed.
