I Am Zeus

Chapter 373: Under Coverage

Sera wasted no time with amenities.

She led the way out of the high chamber and into a side passage that emptied into a broad enclosed court of dark stone and muted gold. It was an ample space for their accommodation, but the sense of edges was very much in evidence. The air within carried her residual weight - lighter than her presence, but heavy enough that each of them understood why lower functionaries were no longer attempting to climb said spines.

"This is temporary housing under my coverage," said Sera. "You will be contained here until otherwise instructed. Do not attempt to exceed the radius, and do not test the boundaries. If you manage to draw attention I do not want, I will rescind protection and the process may resume."

Zeus took in the bare bones of the court. There was no throne. No banners or other tokens of authority. Only space and the underlying density that made the thought of storage easier to accept.

"Understood," he rumbled.

Sera’s gaze swept the group. "Adapt," she said. "Recover what density you can. When I have need of you, I will call. Until then, avoid becoming expensive."

She disappeared along the passage without further preamble. The exit sealed with a pressure shift behind her.

For some time no one spoke.

Poseidon was the first to break the silence, planting the butt of his trident against the stone and using it as a makeshift backrest. "A childhood assignment," he muttered. "Whole epochs of war, of governance, of murder and we were schoolwork they’d forgotten to collect."

Sun Wukong gave a derisive snort. "I stole names from heavens who thought themselves eternal. Seems the entire board was a practice slate."

Hades, standing near the far edge of the court, let his green light dim. "Persephone died for a project two siblings got bored of. Spare me the poetry."

The chill of the exchange did not go unnoticed.

Athena stepped in before anyone could add fuel to the fire. "The information is valuable whether we accept it or not. We know the origin tier our universe came from, the nature of its demise, and the fact that both responsible parties have existing enemies in this location. That is more leverage than we had an hour ago."

Loki’s smile was all teeth. "Leverage requires an advantage. Right now we are in a cage with improved illumination and a patron who has decided we are useful until we are not."

Kratos crossed his arms. "Then we become difficult to dispose of."

Odin’s one eye narrowed. "Easier said than done. The local density suppresses more than power. It suppresses certainty. Everything we built in the lower design is off-kilter."

Hermes paced out a tight perimeter before halting. "She’s right about one thing. We were noticed. Clean extraction requires residual signature. Someone else will come along and read the same anomaly she did."

Zeus listened in silence, the old habit of command still very much in place despite the sky that should have answered him no longer being present. When he spoke, his tone was measured. "We remain within her coverage until we understand the board. We do not engage the functionaries. We do not test her boundary for sport. We determine how Kavod works, how the Houses operate, and where Yahweh’s bloodline is actually located. After that we decide if we are satisfied with being stored."

Hades turned his head to regard him. "And if her ’use’ requires we become weapons against something we don’t understand?"

"Then we measure the cost when the demand is made," said Zeus. "Not beforehand."

Poseidon let out a short breath. "I hate this place already."

Athena’s lips curved. "Good. Hate keeps you on your toes. Complacency gets us processed."

They fell into loose clusters around the court, none of them relaxing despite the odd luxury of space. Zeus stood near the center, testing the small pockets of energy and feeling how the local laws accepted or denied him. Athena charted the perimeter of the radius with obsessive care. Odin remained quiet, listening to the subtle vibrations that came from beyond the walls. Sun Wukong spun his staff in slow, deliberate circles. Kratos stilled himself, feeling the weight of the place in the same way he would assess an enemy. Hermes examined exits that did not exist. Loki observed the rest of them.

Hades kept to himself.

The concept of time was nebulous within the boundaries of the court, existing in a manner not dissimilar to how it would later be redefined for the purposes of the Outer Continuum. There was no sky, no familiar constellations to mark the passing hours. At one point the density within the court changed subtly, indicating movement at a distance that could not be immediately identified. Athena was the first to notice it, followed closely by Odin and Zeus.

"We were registered," said Athena quietly.

Zeus inclined his head. "She said invisibility would not last."

Before any of them could respond, the sealed passage at the far end of the court opened once more.

Sera did not enter. She paused in the doorway, her dark eyes sweeping over the group with the detached interest of an animal assessing potential prey.

"You are adapting more quickly than average lower-origin stock," she said. "This is noted. It is also an irritation. A secondary probe from an external interest has brushed the edge of my coverage. It has been deflected. The next one may not be so forthcoming."

Poseidon’s hold on his trident tightened. "Whose probe?"

"Not Yahweh’s," said Sera. "Not yet. A lesser rival House, testing sensitivities. They do not know what you are. They only know something unlogged survived a concluded design and is currently shielded."

Loki’s brow lifted. "And you are telling us this because.. .?"

"Because your value is conditional on being mine to use," said Sera. "If another House claims you first, that value is transferred. I prefer not to lose inventory to bad timing."

The word hung between them for a moment before being allowed to settle.

Zeus met her gaze. "Then provide us with more than a holding court. If we are to be targeted, give us sufficient understanding of the field."

Sera stared at him for a long moment.

"You will receive orientation to avoid dying stupidly," she said at last. "You will not receive the full extent of my conflicts or the internal workings of the Houses involved. That information must be earned, not given. For now, you remain inside the radius. When the next probe comes, you will remain quiet and let my coverage do its work."

She paused, then added, "And you will begin to decide what you are willing to become in a place that does not care what you were."

The passage sealed once more.

The nine survivors stood in the midst of the muted gold light of the holding court, the omnipresent weight of the Outer Continuum pressing in from all sides, and one very real interest already brushing against the edges of the protection they had.

Their universe was no more.

Their assignment was long since finished.

It was now a matter of whether nine remnants could be made into something the Continuum would need to take notice of - or if they would simply be claimed by whichever power came for them first.

Zeus looked across the group and saw the understanding settling in the others in a variety of ways.

The administrative portion of their existence was over.

The real one was about to begin.
