Chapter 147: Chapter 147: Sealed
Ryan finished explaining the plague to the gathered students and instructors in the medical wing.
Those present: Wei Chen, Liang Feng, Ryu Yichen, Sarah Mitchell, Jake Vanguard, Mickey, Clara, Rose, Lucian, Iris, and Arthur — who sat on a bed with his left arm ending at the elbow, wrapped in sterile bandages. A Chinese healer had stabilized the wound and stopped the bleeding, but she’d been blunt about the prognosis.
"Full recovery and arm regrowth requires at least a top-tier healer or a Grand Core Realm healer," the healer had said. "Anything less and he’ll need a prosthetic."
Arthur hadn’t commented on it. He just listened to Ryan with the same composed expression he always wore.
"Contact transmission," Ryan said, his voice heavy. "Anyone who touched a plagued person — skin to skin — likely has it. We’ve confirmed that much. The compound transfers through direct physical contact and through microscopic moisture particles in exhaled breath at close range. I’ve informed the researchers here, but finding a cure is proving extremely difficult. The plague doesn’t respond to any known treatment methodology."
"Have the higher-ups been informed?" Clara asked.
"Yes. I reported everything through official channels." Ryan paused. "But I doubt they’ll tell the public. They’ll want to avoid panic."
Lucian leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "We should cut this trip short and leave immediately. I’ve had enough of this city."
Wei Chen nodded. "I agree. Our academy lost two students. We need to get the bodies home."
Arthur looked at them. "First thing in the morning, we leave."
Morning came.
The military transport that was supposed to carry them to the airfield never arrived.
Instead, a World Government emergency broadcast played on every communication device in the city.
"ATTENTION ALL CITIZENS AND VISITORS OF NEW GENEVA. EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, THE BORDER OF NEW GENEVA IS UNDER FULL SEAL. NO PERSONNEL MAY ENTER OR EXIT THE CITY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. THIS MEASURE IS TEMPORARY AND FOR PUBLIC SAFETY. VIOLATIONS WILL BE MET WITH LETHAL FORCE. PLEASE YOUR COOPERATION WITH BE APPRECIATED."
Lucian stared at his communication device.
"Fuck, you have got to be kidding me."
Julian, who’d been standing near the window, went pale. His hands started shaking. "No — no, no, no — they can’t — this is exactly—"
His breathing accelerated. His eyes darted around the room like a cornered animal. The zombie virus. Being trapped in a city with no way out while something killed everyone around you. The trauma was written across his face in real time.
Carlos grabbed his shoulder. "Julian —"
"Don’t touch me!" Julian shoved him away and backed against the wall, chest heaving. "They’re going to lock us in here to die just like—"
Mickey stepped in front of him, blocking the room’s view of Julian’s breakdown. "Hey. Look at me. This isn’t the zombie virus. There are Grand Core masters in this city. The plague has a source and it can be found. We’re not helpless."
Julian’s breathing slowed.
Other students were visibly shaken too. Nadia sat in a corner hugging her knees. Amira stared at the floor with a blank expression. Even Bruno was quiet.
The sealed border sank in slowly. They were trapped in a quarantined city with a plague that spread through touch and breath. The tower was full of people. Any one of them could be infected. Any one of them could be spreading it right now without knowing.
Panic spread through the tower as other trapped civilians and awakeners learned the news. Shouting in the corridors. People demanding answers from officers. Families trying to push past checkpoints. The order that had held during the beast attack began to fracture.
An hour later, a World Government representative arrived at the tower.
He was a tall man in a perfectly pressed grey suit — stiff, bureaucratic. His cultivation pressed against Lucian’s senses as he looked up — Mid Grand Core Realm.
He stood in the tower’s main hall and addressed the gathered crowd through a mana-amplified voice.
"Citizens and visitors of New Geneva. I am Deputy Director Hoffman of the World Government’s Crisis Management Division. I understand your concerns. The border seal is a temporary precautionary measure implemented to contain a biological threat that our research teams are actively working to neutralize. The situation is being managed at the highest levels. I want to assure you that your safety remains our top priority."
He paused, letting the words settle.
"Remain calm. Follow the instructions of tower staff and military personnel. Do not attempt to leave designated safe zones. Do not make physical contact with individuals displaying symptoms of the Green Plague. Report any suspected cases to the nearest medical officer immediately. Supply distribution will continue on schedule. Communication with the outside world has been temporarily restricted to prevent misinformation from spreading. This restriction will also be lifted as soon as the situation is stabilized."
"I want to reiterate: this seal is temporary. The World Government has significant resources being deployed to New Geneva as we speak. Researchers, healers, and military reinforcements are en route. Your cooperation during this period is essential and appreciated. That is all."
He turned and left without taking questions.
The students were told to stay in the tower and wait.
But the atmosphere was solemn. And the tower was not really the safest place to be right now — hundreds of people packed into a confined space, any one of them potentially infected, the plague spreading through proximity alone.
Jake Vanguard broke the silence that evening. "If we’re fucked either way, we should just enjoy the time we have left."
Ryan shook his head. "A cure is still possible. It’s difficult, not impossible. We’ve made progress on understanding the plague’s structure — we just haven’t found the weakness yet."
Clara sighed.
Jake looked at Ryu Yichen. Ryu raised an eyebrow, then shrugged. "Fine. We sponsor a hotel stay. Away from the crowds. Less contact with people means less chance of catching the plague."
Jake nodded. "Makes sense to me."
Neither of them seemed concerned about the cost. Jake was from the Vanguard family — one of the top five American clans. Ryu was from the Ryu Clan — the most combat-oriented clan in China. Money wasn’t an issue.
They moved to the Château Lumière, an expensive hotel in New Geneva’s affluent district. Each student got their own room — spacious, clean, and most importantly, isolated from the crowds flooding the city’s shelters and safe zones.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the city, Grand Core masters gathered behind sealed doors.
The four guild masters — Helena Vance, Rothgar Ironside, Kael Morrow, and Darius Cole — sat around a long table along with the head of the Starveil Tower, who had just arrived from an external assignment. A Peak Grand Core Realm cultivator with silver-streaked hair and a cold expression.
Representatives from the Border Integrity Force and the Task Force flanked the other side — each organization had sent one Mid Grand Core Realm master.
And the World Government representative, Deputy Director Hoffman, sat at the head of the table.
Fifteen Grand Core Realm masters in one room.
The door sealed behind them with a mana barrier that blocked all sound from escaping as the meeting began.
