Chapter 150: Chapter 150: The Black Forest
Lucian looked at the system with a deadpan expression.
"So you want me to go to the Black Forest."
The system’s eye-dots widened. "Ding ding ding. Correct."
"You must be crazy."
A quest notification materialized.
Quest Generated:Destroy the creature generating the Green Plague in the Black Forest.
Reward: ???
Penalty: None
"You damn fucker."
The system floated closer, its tiny arms crossed. "You’ll get something nice if you complete the quest. Besides, you’ll surely survive."
Lucian sighed. "You seem so persistent on me completing these quests. I guess the rewards must be very useful."
"Don’t worry too much," the system added, its tone casual. "Based on the intensity and damage output of the Green Plague, the creature generating it is probably not above C-Rank. If it were higher, the plague would have killed significantly more people by now rather than operating on a delayed activation timeline."
The system’s eye-dots shifted slightly — a subtle movement Lucian almost missed.
What I’m actually worried about is who or what might be protecting the creature.
Lucian’s consciousness snapped back to his body in the hotel room. The training space dissolved around him. He sat on the bed for a moment, processing, then stood and left the room.
He gathered the group in Clara and Rose’s shared room an hour later.
Everyone present: Clara, Rose, Wei Chen, Mickey, Bruno, Arthur, Nadia, Sarah, and Ryan. Iris and Liang Feng were still at the medical lab.
Lucian explained what he’d deduced — the rain as a delivery mechanism, the plague requiring constant manufacturing, the creature generating the compound, the Black Forest as the most likely location. He kept the system out of it, framing it as analysis from his time observing the rain patterns and beast behavior.
Rose frowned. "Why don’t we ask for help? Can’t we request Grand Core masters to—"
"All the soldiers are on the battlefield right now," Clara said. "Every available combatant is fighting the second wave."
Arthur leaned against the wall, his single hand resting on his hip. "Then we pick our strongest. If we can get a component of the creature — a blood sample, tissue, anything — we can give it to Ryan and the researchers. Studying the creature directly could accelerate the cure exponentially."
He straightened. "I’m going."
Rose stepped in front of him with a worried expression. "You can’t go in that condition." She gestured to his missing arm. "You have others to rely on."
Arthur looked down at the empty sleeve. His jaw tightened. Then he sighed.
"Wei Chen. Clara. Lucian. Mickey. Rose. Nadia. Sarah." He counted them on his fingers. "Nadia’s power boost ability will be very useful in case you guys encounter something above Early C-Rank. I think seven should be enough to not draw too much attention — but we’ll need help getting to the Black Forest. The warfront is between us and the forest."
He paused. "We need the Vice Master of the Starveil Tower to clear a path for us."
The Vice Master of the Starveil Tower was a woman in her fifties with sharp features and silver-streaked black hair. Mid Grand Core Realm. She listened to Arthur’s request with a guarded expression.
"I’m guarding the tower," she said flatly. "If I leave now and the Dark Order attacks again —"
"I understand," Arthur said. "But if the plague isn’t stopped, the tower won’t matter. The whole city falls."
The woman’s eyes narrowed. She was silent for a long moment.
"Fine. I’ll send my assistant — Velan, Early Grand Core Realm — and two of my officers at Peak Core Realm. Velan will clear a path to the forest edge. The two officers will follow you inside in case of danger." She paused. "The Black Forest hasn’t been fully explored. We don’t know what’s in there beyond the known beast territories."
"How do you track the creature once we’re inside?" she asked.
Everyone looked at Lucian.
Wei Chen raised an eyebrow. He didn’t know. Neither did Clara, Mickey, or the others. Lucian had been deliberately vague about his "analysis."
Lucian shrugged. "I have my ways. That’s my secret to keep." He met the Vice Master’s eyes directly. "But I’m one hundred percent sure I can track it."
The woman stared at him for a long moment, clearly wanting to press further.
She sighed. "Go quickly. The soldiers on the wall won’t be able to hold for more than six hours at this rate. If you complete this mission, you’ll be rewarded heavily by the World Government and the Starveil Tower."
They bowed and left.
The group of ten arrived at the warfront an hour later.
Velan, the Early Grand Core Realm assistant, was a lean man with a shaved head and a no-nonsense demeanor. The two Peak Core Realm officers flanked him — a woman with a spear and a man with twin axes. None of them spoke much.
The northern wall section was the least contested — D-Rank and E-Rank beasts only, held back by Task Force units and mana turrets. Velan surveyed the section and pointed toward a stretch of forest visible beyond the wall.
"That’s our exit point. I’ll carve a path. Move fast and don’t stop."
They couldn’t fly. The Zephyr Eagles and their subordinates still patrolled the sky — any airborne target would be swarmed within seconds. Ground passage was the only option.
Velan raised both hands. A concentrated wave of wind pressure erupted outward — BOOM — blasting a corridor through the beast horde outside the wall. Bodies flew. The path was maybe thirty meters wide and extended toward the tree line.
"Go. Now."
The seven students and two officers ran.
Beasts lunged from the sides — wolves, mutated hounds, things with too many legs — but Velan’s wind kept the path clear, and the students cut down anything that slipped through. Lucian moved at the back, Aethon drawn, not needing to exert himself against E-Rank beasts.
They reached the tree line in under two minutes. The Black Forest loomed ahead — ancient trees so thick their canopy blocked the sky, the space between them dark and heavy.
Velan stood at the entrance, wind still swirling around his hands. "This is where I stop. Good luck."
Lucian looked back toward the city. The sounds of battle were deafening even from this distance — lightning, explosions, beast roars, screaming. Smoke rose from multiple points along the wall.
He turned back to the forest.
The group of ten got ready.
And at the same time, three figures in black landed in front of the Starveil Tower.
Their auras pressed down on the surrounding area like physical weight — Grand Core Realm. All three of them. They stood motionless before the sealed entrance, dark clothing blending with the shadows, their faces hidden behind masks marked with white handprints.
Dark Order.
