Chapter 158: Chapter 158: Sabotage

Lucian stood on the rooftop of a hotel near the research facility, Ryan beside him, and looked toward the southern wall where the Titan Ape cast its shadow over the city.

He activated Primordial Sight.

He immediately felt a sharp stabbing pain, like needles driven directly into his optic nerves. He cut the ability immediately, eyes watering, the afterimage of what he’d tried to see still burning in his mind.

He could analyze Grand Core masters with Primordial Sight but anything about that was not fessible. That power level was still above his reach.

The Titan Ape looked down at New Geneva like a god surveying an anthill.

Then it brought its fist down.

The speed was impossible for something that large. Its fist descended from two hundred meters up and struck the southern wall with the force of a meteor strike.

BOOOOOOM.

The impact crater was visible from the hotel — a circular depression in the wall where hundreds of soldiers had been stationed. Soldiers who had just been cheering victory minutes ago. Soldiers who had survived the plague, survived the beast horde, survived the second wave — killed by a single punch.

A shockwave spread outward from the impact point, rippling through the city. Lucian felt it even from where he was standing.

Ryan stared, face pale. "This is insane. Is that the power we are aiming for?"

"No," Lucian said quietly. "We are aiming for a power above just this."

Ryan smiled slowly. "Right."

Ryan’s eyes tracked the Titan Ape as it raised its fist again. "But first, I think we have to survive that monster first. Because I’m pretty sure the guild masters and the Starveil Tower master don’t stand a chance."

The Titan Ape’s fist began descending.

From every direction, attacks flew.

Darius Cole launched a concentrated Tempest Strike that split the sky. Kael Morrow’s blood blades carved toward the ape’s eyes. Aldric Blackwood’s wind cyclones screamed toward its legs. Helena Vance’s ice storms tried to freeze its joints. Rothgar Ironside’s earth spikes erupted from the ground beneath its feet. The Border Integrity Force masters contributed lightning, fire, and kinetic force. Task Force masters added everything they had.

BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-CRACK-CRACK-CRACK.

The attacks hit the Titan Ape.

Dust obscured it for a few seconds.

When the dust cleared, the Titan Ape stood untouched. A red aura surrounded its body. The attacks had scattered against it like leaves in a hurricane.

It looked down at the Grand Core masters with contempt.

Its chest expanded.

ROOOAAAAR.

A sonic blast erupted from its mouth — a wave of sound so concentrated that it shattered glass across half the city. Windows exploded outward in cascading showers. The sound itself became a weapon, flattening everything in its path.

The Grand Core masters raised barriers. Multiple barriers — layered, reinforced, every scrap of mana they had left. The sonic wave crashed down on them like a hammer.

BOOOOM.

The barriers barely held. Cracks spiderwebbed across every single one. The Grand Core masters struggled — faces red, veins bulging on their foreheads, mana draining visibly from their bodies as they poured everything into maintaining the barriers.

Darius Cole, still bleeding from the lightning bolt the eagle had hit him earlier, looked up through the cracking barriers with fury.

"Where the fuck is Deputy Director Hoffman?!"

The other guild masters shook their heads. They didn’t know. Hoffman had been giving calm speeches from safe locations while they bled on the walls.

Meanwhile, an explosion suddenly tore through the city.

BOOOOM.

The sound came from the east district. Ryan’s head snapped toward it. His face lost all composure.

"That’s where the researchers were! That’s where Clara, Rose, Wei Chen, and Iris were!"

Lucian’s stomach dropped. "Fuck. Someone is trying to sabotage the cure production."

They ran.

They arrived at the research lab three minutes later.

It was ruins.

The building had been destroyed from the inside out — walls blown outward, ceiling collapsed, rubble and debris scattered across the street. Smoke rose from the wreckage. Dead bodies lay in the rubble — researchers in white coats, guards, civilians who’d been nearby.

"Clara! Rose! Wei Chen! Iris!" Lucian shouted.

No answer.

He raised his hand. "Blood Manipulation."

The rubble shifted. Slabs of concrete and metal lifted from the wreckage as Lucian sifted through it methodically, searching for life signs with Blood Sense.

Then — a rumble. Building parts were being lifted by force from the eastern end of the ruins.

Lucian turned toward it.

Rose’s voice— cut through the noise. "LUCIAN!"

He saw them. Rose had created a green Aegis barrier in a small pocket of intact floor, shielding Clara, Wei Chen, Iris, Ryan’s sister, and four researchers huddled inside.

Lucian breathed a sigh of relief.

Then his Blood Sense screamed a warning.

He looked up.

A beam of light carrying enough energy to vaporize everything in its path — fired straight down toward the researchers and the barrier.

Lucian activated Light Steps.

Flicker.

He appeared directly above the barrier, between the descending beam and the people below. His hands shot up.

"Light Shields!"

Twelve light shields materialized in a stacked formation — layer upon layer of solidified light, each one angled to deflect rather than block, spreading the beam’s energy across a wide area rather than taking it head-on.

FWOOOM.

The beam struck the shields. Light shattered and scattered in every direction, harmless. The shields cracked and dissolved under the strain, but they held.

Lucian appeared before the group, feet planted on the cracked floor, Aethon drawn purely out of instinct. His crimson eyes swept the group.

Ryan arrived beside him, gasping for breath. "Clara, are you okay?"

"Yeah. I’m fine."

Lucian and Ryan looked up.

Standing on a building overlooking the ruined research lab was a man in a grey suit.

Deputy Director Hoffman.

He looked down at them with a cold expression.

"I can’t have you scientists ruining my plans."
