Chapter 166: Chapter 166: Clash of Power
Gravity increased around the ape.
A concentrated sphere of distorted space formed around Grimveil’s body. The ground beneath its feet cracked and split. Rubble lifted from the ground and compressed into the air, crushing itself into solid masses of concrete and stone. The air itself grew dense. Heavy. Breathing became impossible within two hundred meters of the beast.
Soldiers near the southern wall were pressed flat. Pinned to the ground like insects beneath glass.
The Grand Core masters raised barriers. Every single one cracked immediately. KRRRAK-KRRRAK-KRRRAK. Spider-web fractures spread across shields. The masters gritted their teeth. Their feet slid backward. Their arms trembled.
The Celestial Serpent hissed. The sound cut through the battlefield like a blade through silk — sharp, ancient, commanding. Its massive body uncoiled from its aerial perch and descended. It intercepted the gravity wave head-on.
BOOOOOM!
The two forces collided — serpentine aura against gravitational force. The air between them distorted, bent, and then shattered like broken glass. Fragments of compressed space rained down in crystalline shards that dissolved before hitting the ground. The shockwave of the collision sent dust and debris spraying across the entire southern district.
The Celestial Serpent held. Its iridescent scales cracked along its underbelly — thin lines of damage that glowed blue where the blood beneath shimmered — but its massive body absorbed the gravity wave’s brunt. The serpent’s eyes burned brighter.
Seraphine watched. Her expression didn’t change. She didn’t panic.
She raised her other hand. Opened her palm. Turned it toward the sky.
And slapped the open air a second time.
A second rune formation materialized above the battlefield. The energy signature shifted. The golden light took on a bluish tinge. The temperature dropped five degrees in a single heartbeat.
Another portal opened.
A quadruped emerged. Sixty meters tall. Covered in white fur so thick and so pure that it looked like walking snow. Each step it took froze the ground beneath it — ice spreading outward in concentric rings from each massive paw. Frost radiated from its body in waves that rolled across the battlefield like tides of winter.
The temperature across the entire southern district dropped thirty degrees in an instant.
The blood on the ground crystallized into red ice. Soldiers who had been pinned by gravity suddenly found the air around them so cold that their barriers cracked not from pressure but from thermal contraction.
Another S-Rank beast. A Frost Monarch. Early S-Rank.
The Paladin of the Church of Dawn — Seraphine D’Arc — was a summoner. Not just any summoner. A Holy Summoner who could call S-Rank beasts through divine rune formations. Not one. Not two. As many as her mana and will could sustain.
Two S-Rank beasts now flanked Seraphine.
Seraphine spoke again.
"I said go back."
Grimveil’s eyes burned brighter. The red aura around its body flared. The gravity around it tripled. The ground beneath its feet collapsed into a crater ten meters deep. The earth groaned. The air screamed.
Then it charged.
Two hundred meters of Titan Ape. Moving with impossible speed. Each fist struck the ground as it ran — BOOM, BOOM, BOOM — each impact creating craters thirty meters wide. The ground shattered beneath its charge. Entire sections of the southern wall collapsed from the tremors alone.
Its fist raised. Wider than a city block. Aimed at the two summons, at Seraphine behind them, at everything that dared stand in its path.
The Celestial Serpent and the Frost Monarch both lunged to meet it.
The clash began.
Grimveil’s fist met the Celestial Serpent’s body.
BOOOOOOM!
The shockwave flattened every remaining structure within a kilometer.
The Celestial Serpent was driven into the ground. Blood sprayed across the battlefield in wide arcs. The serpent writhed. Its coils tightened. Its eyes flickered with pain.
But it wasn’t finished.
The Frost Monarch attacked from behind. Its massive jaws enough to bite through a building — clamped onto Grimveil’s shoulder. Ice crystallized instantly at the point of contact. Frost spread from the bite wound across Grimveil’s arm, down its back, across its shoulder.
CRRRRRK-CRRRRRK-CRRRRRK!
Grimveil roared in fury. It shook its body with explosive force. The Frost Monarch was thrown free tumbling through the air. But it landed on its feet.
The Celestial Serpent recovered. Its cracked scales shimmered with healing light — Seraphine’s holy energy flowing through the rune formation above, knitting the damage. The serpent coiled around Grimveil’s legs. Constricted.
Grimveil stumbled.
Seraphine didn’t fight directly. She stood behind her summons, directing them with subtle hand gestures. Each gesture sent a pulse of mana through the rune formations. Each pulse empowered her summons — healing wounds, boosting speed, reinforcing their natural abilities. Holy energy wrapped around the Celestial Serpent and the Frost Monarch like golden bandages.
Grimveil responded with gravity. It slammed both palms down. A gravity dome formed around all three combatants — the Titan Ape, the Celestial Serpent, the Frost Monarch. The pressure was immense. The ground beneath them compressed into a bowl shape. The serpent’s scales cracked further. The Frost Monarch’s ice shattered across its body. Both beasts barely held— their bodies trembling under the weight of a force that could flatten cities.
The Grand Core masters watched in stunned silence.
They were spectators. This was not their battle. This was a level of combat they could not touch, could not influence, could not even fully comprehend. The shockwaves alone were beyond what their barriers could withstand. The residual energy from each clash made their mana stir uncomfortably in their cores.
Darius Cole watched with his mouth open. He had fought Peak B-Rank beasts. He had killed them. He had bled for this city. And now he stood watching two S-Rank summons and a Mid Astral Realm summoner fight a beast that made his entire career look like a child sparring match.
The battle raged for fifteen minutes.
Grimveil was stronger than either summon individually. Far stronger. Its physical power exceeded both combined. Each blow it landed cracked scales, shattered ice, sent the summons reeling. Its gravity abilities were devastating — able to compress, crush, and distort space in ways that neither summon could replicate.
But together — with Seraphine’s enhancement and healing — the two S-Rank summons matched it. They couldn’t kill it. They couldn’t even seriously injure it. But they could hold it. They could trade blows.
Grimveil realized this wasn’t a fight it could win quickly.
The two summons regenerated faster than it could damage them. Seraphine’s holy energy healed whatever damage got through — scales reknitting, fur regrowing, energy replenishing. And the ape could sense that Seraphine herself had not committed to direct combat. She stood behind her summons.
The Titan Ape made a decision.
It roared. One final, earth-shaking roar that cracked the sky itself.
ROOOOAAAARRR!
Then Grimveil turned.
It walked back toward the Black Forest. Each step shook the ground. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. Trees flattened beneath its feet as it re-entered the tree line. The matted black fur disappeared between the trunks. The red aura dimmed. The gravity field dissolved. The oppressive weight on the battlefield lifted like a held breath finally released.
Seraphine watched it go. She didn’t chase. Her expression remained calm.
The rune formations above faded. The golden symbols dissolved into motes of light that drifted upward like inverse snow. The sky returned to its normal grey.
The Celestial Serpent dissolved into golden particles, drifted upward, joining the fading light of the rune formations. The Frost Monarch followed.
The battlefield was quiet.
Seraphine turned to Aldric and the remaining Grand Core masters.
She spoke with a calm voice.
"Clean up your city. Treat your wounded. The Titan Ape will not return — not today."
She paused.
"But the one who woke it..." She let the sentence hang. Her gaze settled on Aldric. "That is a problem you must solve."
She turned. Her Cloud Serpent descended — landing behind her with a gentle thump. She mounted it. The serpent lifted off, wings beating in slow, powerful strokes that created clouds with each movement.
She disappeared into the clouds.
The soldiers started chanting.
They didn’t know her name. Most of them had never heard of Seraphine D’Arc. They didn’t know much about the Church of Dawn, or the Paladins, or the Great Calamity fifty years ago.
They chanted. Not a name. A title. The only words they could find for what they had witnessed.
"Saint! Saint! Saint!"
