I Became a Cub in the Elven Kingdom

Chapter 64: Mr. Snake’s reply: Big Fat Bird, please help!

Mr. Serpent’s letters to him were always enormous.

This one was no exception.

It was far too large to fit through the door, and there was not enough room inside to unfold the letter.

Whenever this happened, Shu Li would first stuff the envelope into his storage ring, then fly down to the little plaza, open it with great effort, drag out the letter, and laboriously spread it flat.

Whenever the other Little Fairies saw him, they would enthusiastically come over to help.

Stroking the envelope, Shu Li thanked the messenger once more. He had not expected urgent delivery to be so fast. Blake had completed the round trip in a single night.

Had the messenger stayed awake all night?

Blake lowered his head and looked at the child’s worried, round face. Smiling, he said, “I’m a wind mage. At my level, increasing my flight speed is no trouble at all.”

It was precisely because he was a wind mage that he could work as a messenger.

After accepting the little fellow’s urgent letter the previous night, he had eaten dinner and departed to deliver it. It had taken him only a little over two hours to reach the enormous tree where the magical serpent lived. Once the serpent finished writing its reply, Blake had spent another two hours flying back to the divine tree.

If he had not been worried about disturbing the child’s sleep, he would have knocked on Shu Li’s door in the middle of the night.

His task complete, Blake waved gracefully, spread his wings, and left.

After seeing the messenger off, Shu Li eagerly carried the envelope to the little plaza. He could hardly wait to discover what Mr. Serpent had written.

The Little Fairies nearby had already noticed the letter and came over to help of their own accord, asking questions with great interest as they did.

“Sperien, when did you get back last night?”

“How did the mission go? Did everything go smoothly? Was it fun?”

“Did the amethyst tree grant you any branches?”

“What does the amethyst tree look like? Is it big? Is it beautiful?”

“Are the magical beasts in the forest frightening? Are they friendly to Little Fairies like Mr. Serpent?”

“Where are Disio and the others? Why haven’t we seen them?”

“They’re probably still sleeping, right?”

“Wow, I see Disio! Disio—come over here! Mr. Serpent wrote Sperien another letter!”

“Angel is awake too. Angel, come help Sperien open the letter!”

“Budno must still be sleeping in.”

“Hahaha! He’s such a sleepyhead.”

Shu Li was so anxious to read the letter that he barely paid attention as he answered their questions while busily flattening the sheet of paper.

Disio and Angel flew to the little plaza and joined the helpers without being asked.

Angel deftly divided his attention, answering the Little Fairies’ questions in an orderly fashion.

“The amethyst tree is incredibly beautiful. You should all go and see it if you ever have the chance.”

“The magical beasts in the forest hunt other creatures. It’s a little frightening to watch, but they don’t eat Little Fairies.”

“The mission went very smoothly. We all successfully prayed to the amethyst tree and received high-grade branches!”

“You can exchange star spirit herbs for lots of gold coins. I want to go again if I get the chance.”

“But we also encountered some terrifying invaders.”

The Little Fairies had initially been listening with great interest, but when Angel mentioned “invaders,” they were all stunned. Their innocent eyes widened.

“By... By invaders, do you mean what I think you mean?” Lois asked timidly.

Disio nodded gravely. “Yes. Outsiders who broke into the Faerie Forest. There were Dark Elves, a necromancer, and a huge group of pirates.”

The Little Fairies all gasped.

The letter had almost been fully unfolded, so there was little left for them to do. They gathered around Disio and Angel instead, asking them to explain everything in detail.

The Little Fairies flew elsewhere, leaving Shu Li alone in the little plaza to read his letter.

Shu Li spread his wings and flew a short distance above the ground, then began reading Mr. Serpent’s reply with excitement.

As always, Mr. Serpent’s handwriting was bold and rough, and it contained many misspelled words.

Although magical beasts understood Elven, they had never studied it systematically. Magical beasts capable of writing Elven script, like Mr. Serpent, were exceedingly rare.

Of course, most of the time, Mr. Serpent simply sent gifts and asked the messenger to deliver a verbal message, saving himself the trouble of writing.

This time, however, he had uncharacteristically written a very long reply. Shu Li was particularly moved when he saw all the words that had been crossed out in the middle.

Mr. Serpent had worked so hard to correct his mistakes!

Taking a deep breath, Shu Li carefully read the letter.

Mr. Serpent never wasted words. If he could write fewer, he did. Yet this rare letter was four or five hundred words long.

Shu Li read through it quickly. His expression shifted from anxious concern to sudden understanding, and his tightly furrowed brows gradually relaxed.

After reading the final word, he released a long breath.

Wonderful!

Mr. Serpent had not stolen the Sekern bird eggs!

Reckless adventuring parties frequently crossed the borders of the Faerie Forest.

None of the members of these parties were good people. They specialized in underhanded crimes, hunting high-rank magical beasts and stealing their young. They would then auction the cubs in underground marketplaces throughout the continent, earning enormous profits.

The Magical Beast Forest and the Faerie Forest were adventurers’ favorite places to explore.

The outer reaches of the Faerie Forest were protected by the mist the Elven King had created. Ordinary adventuring parties did not dare enter and headed for the Magical Beast Forest instead.

Any adventuring party capable of traveling through the Magical Beast Forest and breaking into the Faerie Forest was usually highly experienced. Most of its members were powerful villains who committed every imaginable crime.

Mr. Serpent had always lived near the edge of the Faerie Forest. Whenever he discovered a band of poachers, he attacked without mercy.

That was why he had collected so many treasures.

Half a year ago, he had robbed an adventuring party and found these five Sekern bird eggs inside its leader’s storage pouch.

Sekern birds were known for their gale-like speed and were third-rank magical beasts from birth. To obtain their eggs, the mother bird had to be killed.

Since the eggs had been inside the adventuring party leader’s storage pouch, their mother was certainly dead.

In other words, the five Sekern birds were “orphans.”

Why had Mr. Serpent sent the eggs to Shu Li?

Because in a magical beast’s peculiar way of thinking, a Little Fairy would naturally be interested in Sekern bird eggs.

If he could not catch the culprit who had carried Shu Li into the forest five years ago, taking revenge on its kin was just as good.

Upon reading that, Shu Li covered his forehead and sighed, unsure whether to laugh or cry.

He had nearly fed the Sekern bird eggs to the little merfolk and young dragon.

The guilty party should pay its own debt. The innocent eggies had done nothing wrong.

At the end of his letter, Mr. Serpent declared that if the Little Fairy did not want to eat the eggs, he should hatch and raise them. Once they became powerful, they could all gang up on the Sekern bird named Deklet.

Shu Li thought that was an excellent idea.

The stupid bird relied on its speed to come and go like the wind without the slightest restraint.

Once Shu Li had raised five birds of gale, they could pursue it together. Then they would see where it could possibly escape.

Having made up his mind, Shu Li put the letter away in satisfaction.

Elsewhere, Angel and Disio had nearly finished recounting the incident with the invaders.

The Little Fairies listened with repeated cries of shock and frequent gasps. The more timid among them huddled together, trembling.

Simply imagining being hunted by the Dark Elves made their blood run cold.

“Thank goodness you’re safe. Boohoohoo—”

Tears filling their eyes, the Little Fairies hugged Disio and Angel, overwhelmed by lingering fear.

“Missions are so dangerous!”

“We’re too young and weak to do missions right now.”

“But you can earn gold coins~”

“I... I want to pray to the amethyst tree.”

“The invaders have already been driven away! There’s no need to worry.”

“You were all so brave, especially Kumandi and Sperien!”

Several Little Fairies flew over to Shu Li and poked the little flower crown on his head.

“Sperien, your little flower crown is a good flower crown.”

“It might be a little bossy, but it’s incredibly powerful.”

“That’s right! It can summon His Majesty—”

Shu Li hastily corrected them. “It doesn’t summon His Majesty. His Majesty is immensely powerful and can sense whether I’m in danger through the flower crown.”

Good grief!

Children were innocent and easily misled. They had to distinguish between active and passive roles. Otherwise, the magnificent Elven King would become a “summoned beast,” damaging his dignity and reputation.

“Oh~~~”

The Little Fairies responded in unison.

“Chirp, chirp, chirp—”

Sif perched outside Budno’s little house, crying out and pecking at the window as though her heart might burst from the effort. Yet the chubby boy remained sprawled comfortably across his bed, fast asleep.

Shu Li rubbed his ears, flew to Budno’s house, and raised a hand to knock.

“Budno, hurry and wake up! The sun is shining on your bottom!”

Bang, bang, bang—

“Chirp, chirp, chirp—”

After five minutes of relentless noise, Budno finally woke and opened his eyes blearily.

“Budno, if we get to the cafeteria too late, there won’t be any breakfast left!”

Shu Li deployed his ultimate weapon. Budno jolted and became completely awake.

“What? I-I’m up!”

Oh no!

He had overslept!

A chaotic series of thumps and crashes sounded from inside, followed by a prolonged commotion.

That day, all the Little Fairies arrived at the school cafeteria ten minutes later than usual.

Budno flew there in constant anxiety, terrified that the cafeteria might have run out of food. When an adult Fairy served him a sumptuous breakfast, he finally sighed in relief.

After eating and drinking their fill, the Little Fairies hurried toward the classroom.

Still preoccupied with the Sekern bird eggs, Shu Li trailed at the back of the group.

He was a Fairy, not a bird. He had no idea how to incubate eggs!

Besides, the Sekern bird eggs were enormous. Who could possibly hatch them?

He racked his brain, trying to remember whether he had ever watched a content creator document the process of hatching chicks.

He recalled several videos but found none of their methods practical.

He simply lacked the necessary resources!

First, he had nowhere to put the enormous eggs. Second, he had no incubator. Third, he had no time. Fourth, he knew nothing about incubation techniques. He had the desire but not the means.

Shu Li sighed softly and looked up at the sky.

“Chirp~”

Four round “snowballs” flew past him.

The plump birds!

Shu Li’s eyes lit up.

The four plump birds landed lightly on the practice field. When they saw the passing Little Fairies, they greeted them with crisp chirps.

The Little Fairies enthusiastically greeted them in return.

“Good morning, plump birds~”

“Chirp, chirp!”

Shu Li broke away from the group and rapidly beat his wings, flying up to the plump birds. His pale-green eyes shone as he addressed one of them.

“Hami, Hami, could I ask you and Doris to help me with something?”

That was right. Every plump bird had a name of her own.

“Chirp?” The plump bird named Hami tilted her round head.

Shu Li removed one enormous egg from his storage ring and placed it before Hami. Patting the smooth shell with both hands, he asked expectantly, “Could you and your mothers help me hatch some eggs?”

“Chirp?”

The plump birds, all still single, gathered around the enormous egg and stared at it with wide eyes.

The bell signaling the first lesson rang, and Aisha entered the classroom just in time.

“Good morning, my little cut... ies...”

Her voice gradually faded as she stared in astonishment at the empty classroom.

Where were the Little Fairies?

The Little Fairies who should have been sitting in their chairs waiting for class were all late?

On one of the divine tree’s branches, five large bird’s nests had been arranged in a row. The Little Fairies helped place the five enormous eggs inside them, then watched in fascination as five plump birds gently settled down, pressing their soft, warm bellies against the eggs in perfect incubation postures.
