“What cameras? Master, what are you talking about?” Ma Hongsheng sounded genuinely confused, as if he had no idea what Qin Fan meant.
Qin Fan’s voice lowered, laced with suspicion. “I found several cameras hidden all over the villa. Did you install them?”
“Master, why would I install cameras in your place? Of course not. I have no reason to do that,” Ma Hongsheng replied calmly.
After thinking it over, Qin Fan began to agree. It really didn’t make sense for Ma Hongsheng to be behind it. He had no motive at all.
“What exactly happened, Master?” Ma Hongsheng asked, his tone full of concern.
“Do you have any short video apps on your phone?” Qin Fan asked, bracing himself. “Just scroll a bit. You’ll see what I mean.”
He hated to bring it up, but with the video already spreading like wildfire, it was only a matter of time before Ma Hongsheng sees it. There was no point trying to hide it anymore.
“I have them installed,” Ma Hongsheng replied. He tapped into one of the apps and started scrolling. Within a few swipes, the now-notorious video of Qin Fan’s ‘performance’ came up.
Truth be told, Ma Hongsheng had already watched it earlier. But now, pretending to see it for the first time, his face stayed perfectly neutral.
“Master… how… how could you do something like that?” Ma Hongsheng said in a voice filled with fake shock and disbelief.
“Enough. Don’t talk about that,” Qin Fan snapped. “I just want to know who installed those damn cameras!”
“That villa—I only bought it recently. Before that, it belonged to a celebrity,” Ma Hongsheng explained slowly, sounding thoughtful. “I’m guessing someone had the cameras set up to spy on the previous owner’s private life. That would make the most sense.”
Then he let out a deep sigh and added with remorse, “It’s my fault. After I bought the place, I never moved in or sent anyone to clean it properly. If I had, this wouldn’t have happened. Your privacy wouldn’t have been exposed like this.”
After a short pause, he continued, as if pondering something. “But Master, why would the person who installed the cameras suddenly leak your video? You’re not even a celebrity. There’s no logic to it. Were they just bored out of their minds?”
“I actually got a call on the villa’s landline not long ago,” Qin Fan recalled, his tone turning bitter. “The person used a voice changer and claimed to have dirt on me. They demanded ten million.”
“What did you do?” Ma Hongsheng asked, playing the part of the concerned disciple.
“I thought it was just a scam call, so I ignored it. I even blocked the number,” Qin Fan said, realizing with growing regret how stupid that choice had been.
“That must have made them angry,” Ma Hongsheng said, stabbing deep with his words. “If you’d just heard them out, maybe this wouldn’t have happened. Why didn’t you take it more seriously? Why block them?”
Qin Fan clenched his teeth, regret burning in his chest. What was done was done. There was no undoing it. All he could do now was damage control.
“Little Ma, help me find a way to clean up those videos from the internet. The faster the better,” Qin Fan said through gritted teeth.
“I’ll do my best. I’ll use every connection I have to calm this storm,” Ma Hongsheng promised with a righteous tone—but inside, he was smirking. Keep dreaming. I wish you’d fall harder.
Once the call ended, Qin Fan felt like all the strength had drained from his body. He collapsed onto the bed in his bedroom.
He had a few million in assets now and was planning to start spending, dress himself up with luxury brands, polish his image, and boost his charm.
But with that video circulating everywhere, how could he dare go out in public now?
—
Later that afternoon.
Inside one of the classrooms in the Finance Department building.
On the podium, the elegant and graceful Liu Yue was giving a lecture, her voice clear and rhythmic as she spoke to the attentive students seated before her.
Everyone sat upright, focused on her words—everyone except Wang Haoran, who was blatantly playing a mobile game on a brand-new phone.
Liu Yue noticed, but she didn’t say a word or even glance at him again.
After all, she had already given him permission. In her class, Wang Haoran was free to do whatever he pleased.
Suddenly, his screen vibrated. A message notification popped up during the game.
It was from Shao Wanwan.
Wang Haoran opened the message casually.
“Gu Yurou damaged a painting worth five hundred thousand at an art exhibition.”
Seeing the message, his expression didn’t change. He wasn’t surprised at all.
Female leads from NovelFire-type worlds were always chaos magnets. Causing trouble was almost second nature to them.
This was exactly the moment when the male lead was supposed to step in and clean up their mess.
But now that he was faking the male lead’s identity, didn’t that mean the responsibility would fall to him?
He scoffed inwardly. He had no interest in fixing someone else’s screw-up.
“She can deal with it herself. I don’t care. Just let me know how it ends,” he typed and prepared to hit send.
【Ding! If Host proceeds, it will be considered a forfeiture of your fake Male Lead identity. You will lose 3,200 Villain Points and 160 Villain Halo Points. Confirm?】
The system’s warning made his finger freeze mid-air.
If Qin Fan hadn’t been such a constant threat, he wouldn’t have cared about those points.
But right now, they were vital.
Losing 3,200 Villain Points would seriously hurt.
“If I go along with Gu Yurou’s main storyline as her Male Lead, will I be rewarded?” he asked the system.
【Yes. The faster you complete the Female Lead Gu Yurou’s main storyline, the greater the rewards. Once completed, she will lose her Protagonist status and all associated halo effects.】
Wang Haoran’s eyes lit up. So that’s how it worked?
He hadn’t been too eager to dive into Gu Yurou’s drama and clean up her mess, but now—now that there was a payoff—it was a whole different story.
Smirking, he deleted the message he had typed earlier and composed a new one.
“Was the painting damaged because of Gu Yurou’s carelessness, or was it someone else’s doing?”
He knew how these female-oriented plots usually played out.
There were generally two types of scenarios when the Female Lead caused trouble.
One, she was clueless and messed things up on her own.
Two, she was being set up by a villain.
Shao Wanwan replied quickly. “According to Gu Yurou, a girl pushed her, which made her knock over the painting. But there’s no evidence. I’ll need to investigate to confirm.”
That was enough for Wang Haoran to guess what had happened.
Gu Yurou had definitely been targeted by a female antagonist in her story.
He quickly began forming a plan in his mind. If it had been just her being clumsy, he could have simply paid the damages and been done with it.
But if someone had set her up, then just paying money wouldn’t fix anything. The core issue would still remain.
And going by female-lead story logic, if this antagonist failed once, she would try again. That meant the plotline would drag on and on.
Wang Haoran had no intention of spending every day running around cleaning up drama.
The best solution was to find this female antagonist and take her out of the equation for good—cut the story short at the root.
“No need to look into the accident itself. Investigate the girl Gu Yurou says pushed her. I want her full background,” Wang Haoran texted, then hit send.
